Axe Girl is a bright, confident throwback to classic action platformers that succeeds by pairing tight mechanics with an infectious sense of charm. Developed and published by Friendly Fire Software, the game presents a compact but carefully tuned adventure that understands exactly what it wants to be. Rather than chasing sprawling scope or complex systems, it focuses on delivering crisp movement, satisfying combat, and memorable encounters, resulting in an experience that feels polished, playful, and immediately fun to control. The premise is simple and effective: you play as Axela, a spirited lumberjack whose peaceful life is disrupted when a strange catastrophe destroys her sawmill. Armed with her trusty axe, she sets out to recover the power sources needed to rebuild, traveling through a series of vibrant stages filled with enemies, hazards, and larger-than-life bosses. The story never overstays its welcome, serving mainly as a light narrative thread that pushes the action forward while allowing the game’s personality to shine through small character moments and humorous touches. This restrained approach keeps the focus squarely on gameplay without making the world feel empty or soulless. Gameplay in Axe Girl revolves around fast, responsive movement and close-range combat that feels deliberately physical. Axela’s axe is more than just a weapon; it is a tool for momentum, offense, and positioning. Slashing enemies, deflecting projectiles, and chaining movement together gives combat a rhythmic flow that rewards aggression without feeling reckless. Platforming challenges are integrated naturally into combat encounters, encouraging players to stay mobile and aware of their surroundings rather than standing still and trading hits. The controls are intuitive and forgiving enough for newcomers, yet precise enough to support skillful play as difficulty ramps up. Level design plays a major role in keeping the experience engaging despite its relatively concise length. Each stage introduces its own visual identity, enemy behaviors, and pacing, ensuring that the adventure never feels repetitive. The game’s boss battles stand out in particular, offering distinct patterns and mechanics that demand observation and adaptation rather than brute force. These encounters feel deliberately crafted to test the player’s understanding of movement and timing, turning each fight into a small but satisfying puzzle of action and reaction. Optional modes such as boss rush and speedrun challenges further emphasize mastery, giving experienced players reasons to return and refine their performance. Visually, Axe Girl embraces a colorful pixel-art aesthetic that evokes classic console-era platformers while maintaining its own modern clarity. Character animations are expressive and readable, making it easy to parse enemy attacks and environmental threats even during hectic moments. The world feels lively, supported by playful environmental details and whimsical elements that add personality without distracting from gameplay. The soundtrack complements this style well, delivering energetic tracks that enhance momentum during combat and lend a sense of triumph to boss encounters. One of the game’s strongest qualities is its flexibility. Multiple difficulty settings can be adjusted on the fly, allowing players to tailor the challenge to their comfort level without locking them into a single experience. This makes Axe Girl approachable for casual players while still offering enough bite for those seeking a tougher test. While the overall campaign is relatively short, it is tightly paced and avoids filler, making the experience feel complete rather than truncated. In the end, Axe Girl is a clear example of an indie game that thrives through focus and execution. It doesn’t attempt to redefine the platformer genre, but it delivers a refined and joyful take on it, built around responsive controls, thoughtful level design, and a cheerful tone that never takes itself too seriously. For players who appreciate classic 2D action platformers with modern polish and a strong sense of personality, Axe Girl offers a compact yet memorable adventure that rewards both casual play and skillful mastery. Rating: 6/10
Very good platformer, especially the last levels were fun and challenging
I only logged a little over an hour of playtime from start to finish, despite going at a lumbering pace. It's still a fun little game if you axe me!
A lovely game with really nice art! The gameplay, while a little finnicky at first, becomes really fun and engaging as the game goes on!
pretty good and i like the art i died 40 somethign times tho and it made me rage
I Came back to add to my review that this game actually gets a lot better as you play, the level design starts to become impressive where as the beginning it's some what basic, but it stats to live up to it's claimed influences. I won't go so far as to call it masterful level design, but... the point is the game is even better than I though, and I thought it was worthy before I do not remember what I paid for this, I know it wasn't full price. It was likely under a dollar, but I don't rightly remember and I'm not bothering to check. Normal retail is $5. This is surprising decent. It'd say the actual animation is it's weakest point. And nothing about it is "great" but it not too shabby either. For the price point, it's a decent little time waster of a platformer with some decent music and competent enough art and graphics for the price point. You get some pretty basic stuff as far as attacks, platforming, using attacks to bounce off enemies. Pretty basic stuff. You can also throw your ax and you can kind of control the arch to some degree by throwing it at different angles. It's even got a boss rush mode. Something like this has a boss rush mode... I'm not saying you need to check it out right away. However, if you've been looking for a goofy, casual time waster of a platformer, you could do a lot worse...
This game is pretty ok. However it is not really my style, the axes should have a cooldown, the axe slash is awfully similar to Hollow Knight especially because you can pogo off of spikes and enemies, also the enemies are a little basic and the bosses are far too easy.
