A precision platformer where you step into the shoes of a nimble Ninja, equipped with sword, double-jump, and wall-climbing abilities, your mission unfolds across nine finely tuned worlds as you ascend from familiar surroundings into increasingly shadowy depths, all in pursuit of the city's salvation from monstrous foes The game strikes a tasteful balance between challenge and accessibility. If you misjudge a jump or fall to your doom, a toggleable “Rewind Mode” lets you undo mistakes, letting you learn without pressure and saving you precious time when you have to retry. Along the way, you encounter boss fights that feel aggressive but fair, framed by a limited yet stylish palette of black, white, and red. These visuals, paired with an authentic soundtrack and hand-drawn cutscenes give the whole experience a nice retro vibe https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Hgp1C9bYOI
The remaster of a remaster that knocks it out of the park once again. Mute Crimson DX is a fantastic blend of Ninja Gaiden and Super Meat Boy. It is fairly challenging, in particular with bosses, however the game is very generous with checkpoints so don't be too discouraged. On a first playthrough it should take somewhere between 4-7 hours to complete. This game makes for a wonderful blind race with friends as well. Replayability exists in the form of collectibles and post game extras to unlock. DX in comparison to Mute Crimson+ adds two new worlds equally as fun and expands upon the music and colorblind options. Highly recommend this game. I have 7 hours of play on this review with 114 hours put into speedrunning Mute Crimson+ previously. With that said I received Mute Crimson DX for free. Consider picking this one up, it is a blast to play as a great challenge without being too overbearing.
TLDR: I super recommend this game for anyone who likes classic style action/platformers from the NES. (NOTE: I played the previous version of the game several times so I was able to blast through most of DX with relative ease. Newcomers to the game may take a bit longer, so please don't put too much stock in my playtime.) I really enjoyed Mute Crimson+ so I was excited and surprised to see this updated version drop. For those new to Mute Crimson, it's a retro-style 2d action/platformer with linear levels. It has a really nice stylish aesthetic, an incredible soundtrack that's authentic to the NES, and a pretty good (but fair) challenge. Plenty of checkpoints throughout the levels ensure that you're not spending tons of time repeating excessively long sections when you die. There are collectibles scattered around the levels, some of which are hidden - these collectibles are optional but they add a really nice extra challenge. The boss fights are really well designed too. The controls feel nice, and I've also noticed the collision detection for landing on far ledges is a bit forgiving so you aren't punished if you miss by a pixel - stuff like this really shows the developer cares. Some of the imagery in this game goes really hard and I love it, but it still has some goofy/campy elements. It's a really nice balance. The story isn't super deep or complicated which I think is fine for this kind of game - it serves its purpose and doesn't bog you down, while still somehow managing to tug at my heart strings in a couple specific scenes (
Moth is precious and I will love them forever
). Thoughts on the new stuff in DX: I really enjoyed the new levels, especially the boss fights which were actually pretty tough (the last one was downright BRUTAL but so very satisfying to defeat). Since I had so much practice with the other bosses in all my past playthroughs of the previous version, they weren't that tough for me, so it was really nice being humbled by the new bosses. Since there are new levels, that has a really sweet side-effect of there also being new music. (Did I mention this game's soundtrack is incredible? I did, and I'll say it again. I have jammed out to this game's soundtrack in my car because it absolutely slaps.) Also one final and somewhat spoilery thing about the added content: My favorite thing ever is that
Ninja and Moth are basically BFFs at the end and their dynamic is so fun :)
If you played Mute Crimson+ and enjoyed it, this version is already in your library! Play it! But if you never played any version of the game before, this is the one you want. It's a really good action/platformer and I can't recommend it enough!

ninja, AND crab!!
Stealthily one of the best indie platformers on Steam, expanded and refined even further with the DX release, with new levels, collectibles, challenge modes, and a lot of charm. While reminiscient of Ninja Gaiden at a glance, Mute Crimson is more focused on movement than combat, with a floaty, responsive double-jump and terrain and stage hazards that will gradually teach you to master it. The early stages are straightfoward, but the game begins to iterate on itself in surprising ways, challenging the player to adjust to changing gravity (veritcal AND horizontal!) and backtrack across collapsing bridges and cycle-based lasers. By the end of the game you're not just traversing rooms, but solving them, and it's incredibly satisfying. Slideshow vignettes unfold between the levels, with dozens of unique illustrations: The ninja witnesses an attack on the city, and somewhat overzealously sets out to discover the attacker and put a stop to it. The story is simple, but cute, and goes in unexpected directions as the main quest wraps up and the new DX levels follow. If you played the original, the devs knew who their breakout character was and gave her a lot more screentime. Checkpoints are generous (more have been added since the 2015 release), and the game also has a rewind function you can activate, letting you roll back costly deaths. The main campaign can probably be beaten in 4-6 hours, with unlockable bonus levels, challenge modes, and speedrun potential extending that further. After playing a few levels, the player can also adjust the default red to a number of preset colors, or adjust an RGB slider to their liking, and I enjoyed my Mint Crimson DX playthrough a lot. At $15, this is a great pickup that stays fun on repeat playthroughs, whether racing with friends or just revisiting it through the different modes. I've played a lot of indie platformers that are fun enough for an hour or so, but this one has always stood out to me. It doesn't try to do everything, but hits dead-center at what it aims at. Highly recommended! (Note: I got a free copy of DX due to owning Mute Crimson+, the previous version, but I've bought gift copies for friends as well.)
This game reminded me of something that i haven't seen in a while. Pure and focused platformer gaming. It's a genuinely good time too! Also the moth milf is hot. Would kiss
Wonderfully fun game, can be quite challenging at times but the frequent checkpoints and how fast you get back to the action prevents things from getting frustrating. The characters are very charismatic and the art style does a great job at bringing them to life. Moth is cute, squid is cute, ninja is cool.
