About
Welcome to the Living Lands, a mysterious island filled with adventure and danger.
Set in the fictional world of Eora that was first introduced to players in the Pillars of Eternity franchise, Avowed is a first-person fantasy action RPG from the award-winning team at Obsidian Entertainment.
The Living Lands is an island where the air hums with ancient magic, the flora seems to move with a mind of its own, and the ground beneath your feet shifts with secrets waiting to be unearthed.
Now, the Living Lands faces a dire threat—a mysterious plague that defies nature and reason, spreading chaos across its sprawling wilderness.
As an envoy of Aedyr, you are sent to investigate, but what begins as a mission of duty soon becomes deeply personal—you feel as though the land recognizes you and is pulling you toward something greater. The choices you make will ripple across the Living Lands, shaping the fates of its people, its creatures, and even yourself. But beware, for every decision carries weight, and the forces you encounter will not hesitate to test your resolve.
Can you navigate the tangled web of intrigue, power, and danger to uncover the truth? Can you save this unknown frontier and your soul from the forces threatening to tear them asunder?
Even more to do in the game! This update brings New Game Plus, a Photo Mode, a brand new weapon type with two-handed staves, the ability to change character appearance whenever you’d like, new character creation presets, additional Godlike presets, custom game difficulty settings, and the addition of three new playable races: Dwarf, Aumaua, and Orlan.
The Living Lands is a place that feels foreign yet somewhat intrinsic to you as it feels the island itself is calling out to you for help. Explore an island home to many different environments and landscapes, each with their own unique ecosystem.
Mix and match swords, spells, guns, and shields to fight your way. Dig into your grimoire for spells to trap, freeze or burn enemies, bash them with your shield, or use range bows to attack from a distance.
Companions from a spread of species will fight alongside you, with their own unique set of abilities. From a former mercenary to an eccentric wizard, they will be part of your journey with your choices shaping them as you help them with their quests.

If you're hesitant to buy it because of comments like "the cities feel dead," "the game is shallow," or "the NPCs are bad," just ignore all that and form your own opinion. It was the best thing I did. I'm absolutely loving the game. It feels like playing a new Elder Scrolls for the first time. The world is massive and constantly makes me want to explore every corner of it. The colors are beautiful, the environments are diverse, and the landscapes are breathtaking. My only real issues are technical ones. The animations are pretty weak and lack any real sense of impact or weight. Sometimes it even feels like a mobile game. I'm not saying it needed to be a super realistic Soulslike, just a bit more engaging and satisfying. The same goes for the third-person movement. It often feels like the character is sliding across the ground. The footsteps look slow, but the character moves way too fast, which creates a strange disconnect. Overall, it's a great game. Playing it has felt like being a teenager again and experiencing Skyrim for the very first time.
Ondra's Titties! Obsidian made the Pillars universe not like eating hay! One of the things I like about this is that they did it by "showing not telling" and shoving a gorillion people, facts, and dates at you. Nope, just "You have shrooms on your face. This island has shrooms errwhere. People are also getting shrooms on their faces but go nutso. Also, Shark Garrus." The combat is delightfully open, and the multifaceted stats (there's no "STR" or "MAG" but an offense stat that calculates damage for everything, which is a really neat idea for hybrids). Sword and board for some really good FPS(wording)? Sure. Pistol and Grimoire for MAX BOOM BOOM? Sure. I also liked how nothing happens from behind unless it's got a callout or you saw them already aggro on you, which I guess works in this kinda well. But one thing I enjoy about it is that the game ends just as the bag of tricks empties. There's no "I did this puzzle" or "more parkour to open the gate again". Just, final battle and credits. That's good restraint.
This game is good, finished it today. The writers did a good job giving you freedom in the "politics" decisions and their consequences, and interactions with your companions. Only drawback, there is a punishing mechanic that requires meta gaming, related to progression of weapons and armor. Would play a follow up, played past games in the same universe with different engines/technologies.
PC version - Good game, bad port. I'll change my recommendation to yes if they ever patch it. Game-wise, it is well-written, acted, and the art direction is top notch and the RPG elements allow for great character builds. That's not the problem. If you release a buggy game, you'll get bad user reviews. If you get bad user reviews, the game won't sell. If the game doesn't sell, you won't have the money to fix the bugs. See how that works? Has an INFURIATING known bug where your keyboard completely freezes up during combat. Leaves you to watch helplessly as the enemies have their way with you. They've know about this for over a year and haven't fixed it, so apparently they think this is perfectly acceptable. Sometimes I wonder if they even have UX for PC ports. Now with Microsoft laying off Obsidian employees like a slaughter, it's unlikely ever to get fixed.
Put simply; this game is a lot of fun. Avowed shines the most in the moment to moment action game play and the level/area exploration and looting. I completed my first place doing magic which is a blast. Avowed manages to avoid one of the great pitfalls of early game magic builds which is having to few abilities. You get grimoires (spell books) that you equip as a weapon and each book has it's own preset spells to use from. You can later spec into what ever spells you want or you can use those points for other things and rely on the books. I thought this was great way to balance the magic system. I did a second playthrough with the ranged weapons and that was a lot of fun. My first playthrough I picked all of the "nice/good" options and on my second playthrough I went with the "mean/evil" options. Besides the major story beats, storylines do not deviate to much. My third final playthrough was a new game + on the hardest difficulty which was reasonably challenging. The story is decent. Good at some points, boring or predictable at others. It is fine for what the games wants to do and doesn't get in the way of what you want to do. This is not a deeply rich RPG in the sense of how you interact with the world and NPCs. It has satisfying combat and exploration and a lot of options for how you want to do that. I definitely recommend this game.
I would recommend this game if you can get it for 30 dollars or less.
