Amazing classic CRPG. The river sequence is extremely memorable.
Avernum 2: Crystal Souls continues Spiderweb Software's tradition of delivering deep, content-rich role-playing games that place storytelling and player freedom above visual spectacle. Set in the sprawling underground world of Avernum, the game follows a kingdom facing one of its greatest crises as a mysterious and powerful enemy threatens its survival. Rather than relying on cinematic presentation or scripted action, the adventure emphasizes exploration, tactical decision-making, and meaningful character progression, resulting in an experience that feels rewarding for players who enjoy classic computer RPGs. Its old-school philosophy may not cater to everyone, but those willing to embrace its style will discover a remarkably ambitious fantasy adventure filled with depth and variety. The underground setting remains one of the game's greatest achievements. Avernum is an enormous realm packed with bustling settlements, abandoned ruins, hidden caverns, dangerous wilderness, and ancient strongholds waiting to be uncovered. Exploration is constantly encouraged, with every region offering unique stories, memorable characters, valuable treasures, and optional quests that expand the world far beyond the central narrative. Instead of guiding players through a narrow sequence of objectives, the game rewards curiosity by allowing them to investigate secrets, uncover forgotten histories, and solve problems in multiple ways. The world feels interconnected and believable, creating a strong sense of adventure as each new discovery adds another layer to the rich lore surrounding the exiled civilization. The main storyline successfully balances urgency with player freedom. As Avernum struggles against an overwhelming threat, players are given the flexibility to shape their own journey rather than simply following a single predetermined path. Multiple game-winning objectives provide different ways to complete the campaign, making choices feel meaningful throughout the adventure. Alongside the primary mission are dozens of side quests that introduce colorful personalities, regional conflicts, and hidden dangers while offering useful rewards that strengthen the party. Even players unfamiliar with earlier entries can comfortably enjoy the story, as it stands well on its own while still expanding the larger universe for longtime fans. Character customization and combat form another major highlight. Players command a party whose members can specialize in numerous combat styles through an extensive selection of spells, abilities, and character traits. Warriors excel in direct combat, spellcasters wield devastating magical attacks and support abilities, while ranged specialists and hybrid builds create countless tactical possibilities. Battles demand thoughtful positioning, careful resource management, and strategic planning instead of simple button-mashing. Every difficult encounter encourages players to make full use of their party's strengths, experiment with different approaches, and equip newly discovered magical artifacts that significantly enhance combat effectiveness. This level of customization keeps progression engaging throughout the lengthy campaign. Although Avernum 2: Crystal Souls delivers exceptional gameplay depth, its presentation clearly reflects its independent development. The visuals prioritize functionality over modern graphical effects, with environments and character models serving the gameplay rather than dazzling the eye. However, the artistic direction successfully captures the atmosphere of an ancient underground civilization filled with lava-filled caverns, forgotten temples, mysterious laboratories, and dangerous wilderness. The interface also retains many features associated with traditional computer RPGs, which may initially appear intimidating to newcomers. Once players become familiar with its systems, however, the interface proves highly effective at supporting the game's complex mechanics without sacrificing flexibility. The sheer amount of content is another reason the game stands out. A single playthrough can easily occupy dozens of hours thanks to its enormous world, numerous quests, hidden locations, challenging battles, and meaningful exploration. The pacing consistently introduces fresh environments, stronger enemies, and new story developments, preventing the adventure from becoming repetitive despite its considerable length. Players are constantly rewarded for taking their time, whether by uncovering powerful equipment, discovering optional storylines, or finding entirely new regions tucked away beneath Avernum's vast underground landscape. Avernum 2: Crystal Souls is an outstanding example of how thoughtful design and excellent world-building can outweigh technical limitations. Spiderweb Software delivers a role-playing experience built on meaningful exploration, tactical combat, player agency, and immersive storytelling instead of cinematic presentation. While its old-school mechanics and modest visuals may require some patience, they support a remarkably rich adventure that rewards careful planning and curiosity from beginning to end. Fans of classic fantasy RPGs looking for an expansive campaign filled with freedom, strategic depth, and memorable exploration will find this to be one of the genre's most satisfying independent titles. pretty good
super retro, hands down one of the best games ever made especially the older version. in depth story and lore. takes a little time to get used to the game play but very addictive. 2 and 3 are the best along with geneforge. 10/10
Great old school RPG! There's difficult puzzles, secrets to uncover and an empire to crush! solid 50-60 hour game.
Love the series. Giving it a boost.
A lot of my hours were idle so it does not indicate how long it took. However, having finished, I give this game a grudging thumbs up. Overall, for a single developer, it deserves purchase and praise. Having written that, it is a grudging thumbs up for the following reasons: 1. The combat system is abysmal. You level up your character to 35 and you will still find with a 90% hit chance that you are missing but your enemies will go right through your resistances like butter. A boss will inexplicably increase damage until they delete you, invulnerability or not. 2. The graphics. 3. Many of the "puzzles" require you to figure out how to level up spells and then return someplace later, with no real notes on where. It makes a heck of a lot of progress hit-or-miss and boring. 4. Final critique is that some quests are bugged or do not make it clear how to progress. If you are a completionist, don't expect to complete everything. 5. Bonus: It annoys the snot out of me when I have a 4-person party that gets blocked easily and cannot be plotted for long distances of travel with no indication on how far away I can move the cursor. QoL issues.
系统非常简单直白,但内容确非常多的西式rpg。 每到一处场景,每遇到一个事件时的文字描述就跟看小说一样。 在阿佛瑞姆这地下世界闲逛真杀时间。
awesome game from an awesome remade series from an awesome oldschool rpg dev still going hard at it!
A great alternative to Geneforge.
