About

It has been a long, eventful journey since Avalon Lords: Dawn Rises first entered Early Access back in 2016. Over the years we faced challenges, made mistakes and learned invaluable lessons along the way. Last year, we made the difficult decision to temporarily remove the game from the Steam store to embark on a complete rebuild. And during the upcoming Steam RTS Fest we are excited to share the first iteration of that process. If you are interested in testing it out, please read on to ensure you know what to expect.
The Rebuild: A New Beginning
Avalon Lords: Dawn Rises has been rebuilt from the ground up by a small, but passionate team of original and new developers. This is not a re-release of the old game but the beginning of an entirely new saga. While we’ve made significant progress, we want to be upfront: this is just the start.
What to expect
To set expectations correctly, here’s what the first iteration of the new build will offer:
A Barebones Experience: The current version prioritizes core mechanics and stability over features and polish. Many systems are still in development and you’ll encounter placeholders and unfinished elements.
Foundational Gameplay: Expect minimal content at this stage. This release is focused on getting the basics right before expanding further. You can test the first mission of the campaign and test the systems in skirmishes. Multiplayer is available but is not properly balanced or polished.
Transparency Commitment: We’re committed to being open about the state of the game. While it is playable, it is not a full-fledged experience yet. Think of it as the foundation of what’s to come.
Why release now?
After being in bad shape for years and basically unplayable since we pulled it from the store, we felt it was essential to make something accessible again for those who have already supported us. By releasing the game during the Steam RTS Fest, we hope to re-engage with our community and invite new players to be part of this rebuilding process. It goes without questions that early supporters do not have to buy the game or any content again.

A lot still needs to be implemented and improved but Avalon Lords is a nice blend of Age of Empires and Total War. The total number of concurrent players is usually low which is why it was a great decision on the part of the devs to include bots and allow you to gain both xp and cheevos while playing against them. Here is a run down of the game, you build buildings and upgrade them much like in AoE 2 to build your armies. Your armies function much like armies in Total War but they still lack a lot of control and with many of them on screen then can tank the framerate. Destroy the enemy castle and you win, when you win you'll gain xp which will allow you to upgrade your perks, so there is a progression system here. I played it for an hour, it was fun, very east to get to grips with if you've played either of the aforementioned games. PS, the water isn't animated =/
Unpolished, unbalanced attempt at an RTS. Pretty much an Age of Empires II ripoff in 3D. Developers appear to have given up on it. Don't bother. If you like this, just play Age of Empires II instead, it's better in every way. Edit: Looks like the game is being worked on again after 2 years. Props for that. Will check it out at a future date to see if it's improved.

I like the concept, but the delivery needs a lot of work. Currently there are less than a handful of players online, so AI matches are the norm. Empire mode is kinda like a persistent territory war, factions battle for control over a large island that is parceled up into hexes. Currently, due to the lack of players, you will be matched up with and against AI opponents. I was never paired with my own faction, instead I was made to fight against them, with the enemy faction on my team. What I thought was rather strange is I am playing the defensive faction, getting a supposed bonus to defensive structures. By the time I was able to build a wall, I was being effectively zerged by the enemy AI. This happened repeatedly, it seems the AI favors offensive rushes with a seemingly impossible number of troops. This makes defensive siege play very difficult if not impossible. I haven't experienced much of the game thus far, so it would be unfair to be overly critical, especially while in Early Access, so I'm gonna say thumbs up for the concept and style. Hopefully balance is worked out in the near future.
This game has certain good founations for a classic Age of Empires type strategy game. However at its current status its very buggy to the point where its unplayable. I will shorten the gameplay description since it basically plays like any Age of Empires game with few changes in units and less features. You start off with a castle, one peasant unit and one cavarly unit. Units in this arent presented as a single person, instead they are more people as one unit, and they die as the health of the unit gets lower, so units with less health will have less people in them. Castle cant be rebuilt as far as i know, and if it gets destroyed, you lose the game. There are also evolutions you start in the castle which unlock new buildings and troops. Another interesting thing is that once you upgrade your castle, instead of all the buildings upgrading themselves along with the castle, they have to be upgraded each manually. Out of buildings there are basic farming and warehouse buildings, barracks, stables, archery ranges and siege workshops, along with few other buildings which are used for research. There is also market, which sadly doesnt work, and which could be the saviour to the horrible gamebreaking bug. Also, there is no naval combat (ships) compared to most of medieval RTS. There are 5 different resources, food, wood, gold, stone and iron. This already sounds weird since there are 3 different resources gathered from mining. And this is where the issue appears. These 3 resources spawn next to your castle when the game begins, however after building countless mines i couldnt get my peasants to farm stone. You can click on iron and gold, but for some reason the stone doesnt work and peasants simply wont mine it. I tested it in multiple different matches and i couldnt get it to work. While stone is very rarely used, it is needed to upgrade the castle, and only way to find it is by enabling "treasures" which are treasure chests randomly spawned on map. Treasures drop a lot of material and there is quite a lot of them, although even they sadly very rarely drop stone for some reason. Either way, stone bug aside, the game is still very unfinished and has big issues especially with unit movement. You will need to click multiple times since units hit invisible walls randomly while walking. Units dont fight automatically, most of the time they just stand near enemies while they are attacking your base. Units can climb extremely steep hills which render them useless for cover usage. Animations arent that great either and there are only 2 maps. And lastly there is a talent tree with passive buffs for some reason. I usually dislike talent trees, and they really have no place in game like this at all. While everything else seems balanced since there are no nations and everyone starts off same and even though buffs are unlocked for free by playing, this thing can only give unfair advantage to players who have played for longer time. Avalon Lords is far from finished and is almost unplayable. Developers made some decent core features for RTS, but there are game breaking bugs and game is abandoned for 2 years already. Multiplayer is dead and if you dont have friends to bring along, game fortunately has bots. Pros: - Completely free to play - Basic Age of Empires like RTS design - Bots with 4 difficulties and multiplayer Neutral: - There is a huge talent tree with some serious buffs like +25% health, more stamina, faster build speeds etc. These dont really belong in RTS games and can only make them unbalanced. Cons: - Abandoned - Unfinished - Gamebreaking bugs - Only two maps - No nations, races or anything.. everyone uses same units
