This is one of those cases where the mixed reviews are wrong and give a false impression. I play every Myst style game I can find and this turned out to be one of the best. The worlds and environments are beautiful, which is one of the things I like to see in a Myst style game. The puzzles in Aura are very good. What I liked in particular is that you always get a beautiful animation the moment you solve a puzzle. This felt very rewarding. One downside of the game is that some (but not all) of the character animations look pretty bad. But that does not spoil how much fun it is to play this game. I highly recommend Aura, Fate of the Ages for any Myst fan.
Lets not compare Aura to similar titles like Myst, expecting intricate world plot or conspiracy. The cryptic peculiar nature of Aura's world is what make it charming and add to the adventure. It let you ponder into a dream like fantasy with most left to imagination, no fun in knowing all its secrets. It's what make a great spiritual adventure.
"Aura: Fate of the Ages" is an ancient game from 2004. It's a whopping 20 years old at the time of this review. The game lacks support for any modern gaming display resolutions (or widescreen monitors), hasn't been modernised or updated to run smoothly on modern gaming PCs. Despite this lack of modernisation, it carries a pretty high price tag for such an ancient game. This seems to have been put on Steam as a nostalgia gouge, or just a cash grab to try profit from abandonware. This is basically a Myst ripoff, you do some first person adventuring by shifting between 360 degree "scenes", but with no real first person locomotion, just teleporting. Click around in each scene to solve the adventure game puzzles and solve the mysteries in the plot for the game, which is basically hard to differentiate from a Myst game, not only did they borrow the gameplay, they borrowed the esoteric Steampunkish theme. Highly derivative, to say the least. On the upside, the game does feature customisable controls and resolution, so at least some of the basic, minimum requirements have been met. Unfortunately there's a number of other technical defects and shortcomings which contribute to the game being difficult to recommend to gamers. The game only displays in 4:3 pillarboxed aspect ratio, due to the age of the game, it predates the 16:9 widescreen gaming standard established back in 2006. It's possible they're marketing this towards people using an old CRT they found in a dumpster, or this game is being specifically marketed towards people gaming on PC's from 1995... either way, this isn't really acceptable in the modern era of PC gaming. It's obviously not going to look right on a modern 16:9 gaming display. The game resolution caps out at 1200p... it'll never look right on a modern gaming panel, because it'll never run at your native display resolution. That's a fail. These technical defects push this game below acceptable standards for any modern PC game. So, should you buy this game? Is this one of the best of the 100,000+ games on Steam? "Aura: Fate of the Ages" is relatively expensive for an abandonware nostalgia gouge, at $5 USD, and it's not worth it. The game is just too old, hasn't been modernised. And as the old saying goes, you can't go home again. For comparison, the $5 asking price for this game could get you games like "DOOM", "Hellblade: Sensua's Sacrifice" or "Mad Max". Quality, professionally made games like those are frequently on sale cheaper than this.

Aura: Fate of the Ages is a contemplative first-person adventure that firmly belongs to the lineage of classic puzzle-driven games inspired by titles like Myst, prioritizing atmosphere, worldbuilding, and intellectual challenge over action or character-centric drama. Developed by Streko Graphics and published by THQ Nordic, the game invites players into a surreal, mystical universe where logic, patience, and observation are the primary tools for progress. From the outset, it makes clear that this is an experience meant to be taken slowly, with an emphasis on immersion and mental engagement rather than momentum or spectacle. The narrative framework revolves around Umang, a young disciple charged with retrieving sacred rings scattered across multiple realms, each representing different philosophies and aspects of existence. Rather than delivering its story through frequent dialogue or cinematic scenes, Aura relies on implication, symbolism, and environmental storytelling. The plot functions more as a thematic backbone than a driving force, giving purpose to exploration without demanding emotional investment in characters. This approach can feel distant or abstract, but it aligns with the game’s meditative tone, encouraging players to focus on the meaning of the worlds they traverse rather than on interpersonal drama. Each of the game’s realms is visually and conceptually distinct, ranging from lush natural landscapes to mechanical and esoteric environments that feel governed by unfamiliar rules. These locations are presented through largely static, pre-rendered scenes, which were visually impressive at the time of release and still convey a strong sense of atmosphere today. The environments feel intentionally quiet and isolated, reinforcing a sense of solitude and introspection. Movement through these spaces is deliberate, encouraging careful examination of every structure, symbol, and device, as progress often depends on noticing subtle details that might otherwise be overlooked. Puzzle design is the core of Aura’s identity, and it is here that the game both shines and risks alienating players. Many puzzles are intricate, layered, and deeply satisfying when solved, often requiring players to understand systems rather than simply manipulate objects. Others, however, rely on obscure logic or connections that are not clearly communicated, leading to moments of frustration. The game rarely offers direct guidance, and solutions can require extensive experimentation or note-taking. This uncompromising approach rewards perseverance and analytical thinking but can feel punishing to players accustomed to modern hint systems or clearer feedback. The interface and controls are functional but clearly rooted in early-2000s design. Interactions can sometimes feel imprecise, with small clickable areas and minimal visual cues indicating what can be examined or used. Inventory management and navigation are straightforward, yet the lack of modern conveniences reinforces the game’s expectation that players remain fully engaged and attentive. While these limitations may slow the pace, they also contribute to a sense of authenticity, reinforcing the idea that discovery must be earned rather than handed to the player. Audio design plays a crucial role in shaping the game’s mood. The orchestral soundtrack and ambient soundscapes lend each realm a distinct emotional texture, often enhancing the feeling of wonder or mystery. Music is used sparingly, allowing silence to dominate at times, which further emphasizes isolation and contemplation. Voice acting and character animations, where present, feel dated and occasionally awkward, but they are infrequent enough that they do not significantly detract from the overall experience. Reception to Aura: Fate of the Ages has always reflected its niche appeal. Fans of classic adventure games often praise its ambitious puzzles, evocative environments, and willingness to challenge the player intellectually. Critics and less patient players, on the other hand, frequently cite its uneven puzzle logic, thin narrative, and aging presentation as barriers to enjoyment. It is a game that offers little compromise, asking players to adapt to its rhythms and expectations rather than adjusting itself to broader tastes. Ultimately, Aura: Fate of the Ages is best appreciated as a product of a specific era in adventure game design, one that values atmosphere, symbolism, and cerebral challenge above accessibility or narrative clarity. It is not a game for those seeking fast progression or emotional storytelling, but for players who enjoy unraveling complex systems and losing themselves in mysterious, thoughtfully crafted worlds. When approached with patience and the right expectations, it delivers a quietly absorbing journey that lingers in the mind, even as its rough edges and abstractions remain clearly visible. Rating: 6/10
Nostalgia strikes stronger each time I play this game. I wish they could bring Aura 2 to Steam as well ♥
