One of the first arcade games that I ever played with more than a passing interest was Namco’s seminal Galaga. One of the original space shooters, Galaga was approachable in ways that most top down shooters simply aren’t, and I was able to get better and better as the years went on and I kept returning to it. I feel like a lot of the games in that tradition nowadays are still in the mindset of wowing arcade onlookers with streams of bullets and floods of enemies. Vortex Attack is a bit different. It knows to start off slowly and go with a player’s pace, allowing pilots to get into a groove. There are still plenty of bullets to dodge, but the fast pace of the action and the multitude of weapons put the player on a balanced playing field, and the whole package reminds me of arcade games of yore rather than more modern dodging simulators. An old-school static-screen SHMUP, with a lot of bullets, but not a bullet hell. Hold the fire button and avoid a screen full of random bullets while trying to collect a screen full of pickups that hold back and eventually destroy a black hole. Repeat until game ends. Or you end, whichever comes first. Mechanicaly it seems fine, controls work, no complaints there. There's even a slow movement button, though I never felt like using it. The game starts quite slow and takes a few stages to get going. Unfortunately, if you get plenty of power-ups along the way (which doesn't seem too hard), you'll be killing most enemies about as fast as they can spawn, along with a large percentage of enemy bullets (though not all can be destroyed). Your ship can take a few hits, and if you get a shield, well, who cares about bullets? Now while that's fun and all, it leaves me with little sense of threat, even when I'm messing up and getting myself killed, on the second-last stage. Aside from complacency, the main danger ends up being things invading your personal space, particularly things that are the same colour as the background, which is frustrating, but thankfully doesn't happen all the time. There are also standard bosses and the traditional shooting gallery bonus levels, which are good to break up the gameplay, but not terribly exciting. NOTE: Only played with a couple of ships, there may be some that make things more interesting, but I'm bored already. also I don't have anyone to try multi. Apart from poor visibility on some enemies, the graphics are pretty good and appropriately arcadey. Didn't notice the sound, so, good. Overall, it's not a bad game, but it doesn't quite hit the mark. Fans of the genre might well like it, but with so many similar games out there, you can probably find something better.
73 / 100
Being more of a retro throwback to the 8-bit arcade games, Vortex Attack (VA) does not bring much new to the genre, yet I found myself having quite a bit of fun challenging my high scores & pushing further through the levels. Leaning more on the easy side, getting through much of the game's levels will not take a lot of time to conquer. Once you get the hang of things, powering through the main 50 levels may take you 30 mins, but getting a high scoring run is more challenging. Collecting the 'lumergy' that rains down on you from enemies you've destroyed will increase your combo score & help close the vortex for the level. There is some good gameplay balancing out collection combos while trying to dodge & clear the screen as quickly as possible. Later levels tend to turn full-on bullet hell, but still is rather forgiving with its regenerating health between levels/sectors & your ships able to take quite a few knocks. The ships you unlock as you defeat the bosses all have unique stats that give them very different play styles & firepower configurations. Your success in later levels does seem to have an element of luck to it, more specifically in regards to the power-up drops. Without the firepower, levels become very slow & painful, & your score will suffer. These seem somewhat random to me, not to mention the risk of simply missing picking them up when they do spawn, or accidentally hitting a power-down drop in the chaos. When you do get a good run though, with a well-timed Shield or Force Field power-up drop &/or the right ship weapon upgrades, the firepower (and resulting carnage) can be glorious! Boss levels occur every six levels. Like the bonus levels succeeding the boss, or the asteroid field levels that require some different tactics, the boss fights offer to mix things up from the regular level gameplay. Unfortunately, I didn't enjoy the boss levels much as the mechanics were basic & very similar on each iteration. If you do not have your firepower upgraded also expect a very long & dull boss fight. This lack of variety also hinders the regular levels. Although they do change a little bit between sectors, they are very 'samey' in how they play out. I found the menu navigation frustrating to use with an analog stick being very touchy with no deadzone present & occasionally on start-up it would not resize to fullscreen correctly (on 4k?), but once running properly the game is silky smooth. Also, on a very minor note it seems the high score table is not updated for 2018 season in the Steam Interface via achievements tab so high scores can only be seen in the game. VA is not the best out there, but not all that bad either. It's the sort of simple shoot 'em up I like to kick back to after an exhausting day at work. Load it up for a quick session, chill & let the brain zone out. No twitch reflexes needed, easy going & forgiving, yet still offering an enjoyable challenge.
Vortex Attack is a crazy, delightful shooter
It reminds me of many older arcade games (Raiden and 1941). If it's a genre you like it's worth it, in my first 20 minutes I only got to level 19, which was only the 2nd of 10 sectors. With playing more difficult levels, where there are more enemies and bullets to dodge, the gameplay will lengthen several times. You'll be trying to beat your best score over and over again in this one. All sprinkled with fairly simple vector graphics and reasonable sound design.
I genrally do not play games like this but i won a key from a contest from playfire so mind as well. Turns out i enjoyed it. There is a lot of varity between the different ships. Some are strong but slow or fast but weak ect. There are differnt power ups like speed up. Rapid fire (though it's useless as you can mash on the key you have your fire button set to) you have little helpers that you can collect that will shoot lasers and or other bullets and you can power them up as well for some extra damage. If you get a really good set up try not to die. If you do die you loose all of your points (which is mean :3 ) So basically if you like spaceship shooters and want a challanging one i would go for this one. Its priced right and its fun what more could you ask for?
indeed , its a great game. addictive shmup variety of spaceships" , each with its own skills, shootin, handling retro mode available great version of an arcade title
Garbage game. Says full controller support. That is a lie. Unplayable. Save your money.
