This was an enjoyable title that I wished I played sooner. It's simple pixel art hides several little details that add to the overall story which I'll admit is told very well without any words actually being spoken. I can't think of any other game that showed so much emotional depth with slight movements and gestures. Well Done Brandon. The combat was challenging but never too difficult or impossible and I really enjoyed finding new bosses to beat while exploring. I hope anyone else who purchases this title enjoys it as much as I did.
Ato is a pretty good metroidvania. You are getting some nice abilities to work with, you have a lot of different enemies to learn and actually nothing feels really unfair. Some stuff feels clunky, but that's a game choice I can live with. This clunky stuff comes mainly from the little pause you are doing after nearly every move. You are hitting? Fullstop, if you are not in the air. You are dodging? Fullstop, if you don't jump again. You are doing a homing attack? Again, fullstop. It's something you have to get used to, but that's really fine and I still think the game is good with it. But what really annoys the hell out of me are the achievements and those are the only reason I give this game a negative recommendation. If you don't care about achievements and you just want to play a nice little metroidvania, go for it. But if you want to get all the achievements, this game checks nearly all the boxes for annoying achievements. Difficult-related achievement: Check Difficult-related achievement you first have to unlock with one playthrough: Check Speedrun: Check Find random stuff: Check Play the game in different unfun ways (no dodge playthrough - don't collect X playthrough[s] - Hardcore Mode and so on): Check The 100% achievement is fine, because you can see missed stuff on the map. Just not random stuff like visions. I'm still trying to get the Hardcore (One-Hit-Mode) achievement and I will get there, but it's super annoying. Achievement OCD is a disease, yeah...
Ato is a very cute Metroidvania game in a pixel-artstyle. The movement in this game feels nice, especially later on with more skills and the combats are fun as well. There are a lot of little secrets and easter eggs hidden within the 6 hours (at least that's what I needed for one casual run) of gameplay who were a lot of fun to discover. I bet you can become really good with the whole movement and combat system and grind a lot to gain all achievements with several "hard mode" like conditions, but that's not really what I like to do. Anyways, I'd reccomend this game to anyone who either looks for a short but entertaining game with fun level and puzzle-design or anyone who likes getting good with a combat system and hunting these achievements.
Wonderful art and great mechanics and I love hell difficulty.
It's great, support good games
cat with sword.
game if the most unique boss figths that ive ever seen, each has its own gimmick, the puzzles are fun and not that challenging, theplatthe forming sometimes is strange becouse of some imput lag, the simple art style is charming and esential for knowing whatsomithing does instantly
