This game drove me to the Mountains of Madness, but not in the way the title would suggest: Game was in progress, and needed major improvements. I showed some screenshots to confirm the horrendousness... That alone should confirm how little care was put into creating this game, and making it playable and fun for all. The screenshots are still around in my library; at least the ones I didn't delete. We were curating the game, and tried to give constructive criticism instead of writing any bad reviews if possible. Group is kind of disbanded now, so I'm throwing this out there. Developer "took my key through Steam" a year or so ago, since I would not write a positive review, I am assuming. Don't give them your money please. Game was horribly done and I was waiting for more progress before I could give any credence to lending a thumbs up at all. I spoke again about the key, and continuing my review. I can't (or would rather not, if it is an acceptable practice within Steam terms/guidelines) witch hunt or I'd show you some screenshots links and email confirming "them" getting caught in a lie. Pros: None that I am aware of, since I cannot comment any further. I wanted to wait and make some more marks with my "pen and paper" here, but you see, the developer crippled my efforts. Revoked game. Cons: Don't worry about them. Stay away and it doesn't matter. If you ever happen upon this game somehow, and it disappears from your library, don't say I didn't tell you so! Total disaster of a game from disaster development. Game should be called...
Indian Giver Simulator 2018
You can probably guess from my Steam name and avatar that I'd probably be interested in a horror/sci-fi game set in icy environs. Unfortunately, this is not the snow-drenched horror game to best Kholat, nor is it even the Lovecraft game to replace the epic shortcomings and bad memories of Dark Corners of the Earth. Is there potential here? Yes. Definitely. Is it anywhere near even the Early Access stage yet? No. I don't believe so. There is still an awful lot of work to be done to make this anything other than "potentially interesting" and "admittedly atmospheric", the two most positive things I can say about it at this point in time. Will said work ever get done? That is for the devs to know, and the rest of us to find out. In the meantime, I can't, in all good conscience, recommend this at the preposterous price of twenty dollars when there really isn't a playable game here yet. Hold off a bit longer, and in the meantime we'll all hope this isn't yet another disappointing footnote in the history of Cthulhu-themed video games. Verdict: 4.5/10.
Abandonware
Abandoned for more than a year now. I would not purchase this until/unless some communication and a lot of work has gone back into the game, which was (last I checked) and continues to be (according to more recent "playtesters"(i.e. early access adopters)) a shoddy and fairly unplayable mess to this point. To my knowledge, the development team was only two people, and I'd guess they have moved on at this point. Has all the hallmarks of taking on more than you can chew and once again relying on early access to fund development, which is always a failed venture. Shame really. Had high hopes for this one. Specially for my english comrades I'll translate things I dont like or want change: - lack of russian localization in prologue - you can't skip intro video - bad optimization - no info about the game: people, actions, world etc - texture bags - lack of navigation on the level - lack of interior items (especially in the tents)
*********************************************************************** First, we must remember that we are talking about a game in "Early Access" so we can still see many problems as bugs, jams on the ground, provisional modeled, inconsistencies in the story development, etc. Let it said, with "At the Mountains of Madness" we are in the adaptation of the novel or long story eponymous name out of the mind of H. P. Lovecraft adaptation, in my opinion is quite good, especially in relation to landscape and environment, because that is where lies one of the strengths of the game. We recognize that one of the hardest things when adapting most Lovecraft stories, is to translate these almost dreamscapes that presents the Massachusetts escirtor correctly. Scenarios full of non-Euclidean architecture, planes and vertices beyond all human logic, ciclópleas aliens and all sorts of structures emerged from the mind of a lunatic or a genius elements. When we read these descriptions in the stories of H.P.L. each uses his imagination as well as they can and recreates these strange places to our reason in our heads ... the problem comes when this has to translate into a game of "coherent" form and must say this "At the Mountains of Madness "gets achieve this goal more than satisfactorily. The Antarctic landscapes, which in principle should be percividos as "normal" are strange and alien as the gigantic structures of the Ancients, conveying the feeling of being in an exotic world that is not ours. I repeat, is a play on "Early Access" so we still have things to improve (some animations, textures, patterns, physical, etc) but for someone like me who got to play the game in its earliest, it is easy to appreciate the improvements that experienced "at the Mountins of Madness" in every section, including optimization. Greetings.
As said many times, too bad there is no neutral button... reluctantly but I recommend it but only for those who understand what EA really means, and only because I have some faith in the devs. The framerate thing for which I did not buy the game for a long time seems to be solved, or at least it is playable. The graphics are not great, but hey, most Cthulhu mythos stuff we get is usually low budget, so I can live with this. 2 things however bother me: The first one is the invisible walls and collision in general. Sometimes I get stuck in a minor obstacle and have to jmp/push/load my way out. Also there are lots of invisible walls which prevent you from exploring, yet it is very unclear what direction you need to go to. The other thing is narration. I am royally confused what is happening, sometimes short cutscenes come in with no good reason and I did not really get the strory, or what the games wants me to do. All in all, I only recommend this if you are a HUGE Lovecraft fan, and want to support the devs. You can see that they put effort in it, the atmosphere is somewhat good, but they really must focus on storytelling, as it is one of the core principles of Lovecraftian pieces. Suspense, good storytelling, constant fear of the unknown.
These devs and this game would be a great example in a video game course of what not to do. The devs were arrogant from the day it showed up on Steam, making people who had paid for it in a Greenlight bundle jump through more hoops than you could imagine, and if anyone dared complain they were slapped with a forum ban. I was a bit upset when I was banned, but then when I finally got the game, I wasn't too bothered. The game has the worst voice narration, animation, loading times and major holes in the story to the point at times of being incomprehensible. They obviously couldn't fix it or get it running properly and have now walked away from it. Yes, it's abandonware. I could see that coming on the first day it showed up on steam.
Nope, nope, nope. I suppose I should have realized there was a serious problem when I noticed that this game has been in "Early Access" for over 5 years. Of course, I didn't notice until after "trying" to play it that there hasn't been an update in 4.5 years. So I think it's a safe bet that this game has been abandoned and none of the extant bugs are going to be fixed. Which is sad, because this game has a LOT of potential. Visually, it's gorgeous. In terms of atmosphere, I think, from what I've been able to see of it, the dev team did a great job of recreating the atmosphere of Lovecraft's story. And while the game mechanics are not the best, they aren't bad. That said, however, there are some pretty major problems that make the game all but unplayable. First, the ability to walk through a fair number of rocks and sheets of ice is disconcerting. Being able to see through almost as many also creates problems. The "freezing" mechanic is kinda neat, but after a while it just gets annoying. The fact that it isn't readily apparent where you're supposed to go also gets annoying. However, the biggest issue for me is that just a short while into the game, you reach a point (or I did, at least, I suppose it's probably not a continuous problem or more reviews would mention it) where the character just won't move. I'm supposed to be escaping a cavern, which is all well and good. But after moving in one direction and having rocks fall in your path, you can no longer move in any direction no matter what you do. After trying this for the third time, I gave up. I really wish the team would actually finish this game, as I still believe it has a tone of potential, but at this point I doubt that is ever going to happen. I don't think I've ever been this disappointed with a game.
At the Mountains of Madness
