i wanted to play this it looked really cute but it doesnt work on the index maybe in the future if they fix the issue with all the controls ill give it another shot
Experienced on the Meta Quest 3
You can view my gameplay & early impressions here: https://youtu.be/i2f_MFf3rMw This is solid cooking game for VR that has singleplayer or shared / split-screen co-op. It's got a quirky sci-fi alien theme with some exotic dishes to prepare. I would say it's better than the average cooking game in VR, but the problem is that it's not in the top-tier of VR cooking games. It's got a a lot of mysterious ingredients & some interesting tools to use. A mechanic that is odd for a cooking game is that the customers, food, & tools all have symbols that guide you on how to prepare the meals. You may need to match the color on the knife in order to chop the ingredient to the customer's preference or you may need to figure out how to match the oven symbols in order to correctly heat the ingredient. Obviously, at first you'll be confused, but once you memorize allt he symbols it'll be second-nature (assuming you get to that point in gameplay). This game would be perfect for casual gamers or those new to cooking VR games because of the lack of time pressure, at least at the start of the game (that time pressure may come later on). This game really focuses just on trial and error and on experimenting. After the tutorial, the game wants you to just try out different dishes. You won't know exactly what every customer prefers to get the 5 star rating. Game is running on the Unreal Engine. On my RTX 3080, I was getting a steady 72 fps (default on Q3). I did not experience any major issues or bugs (other than the buttons not always corresponding to what was listed by the game). You only have nodal teleportation, along with snap turning only. There are no graphical settings. You must play standing as there is no way to adjust height (I could not get the reset position to work correctly either). Since it's nodal teleportation, you'll need to reach for some stuff or be able to move a few steps. Room-scale is recommended, but you only need a small space. Overall, it's a nice game. The art style is creative, but the visuals do look like a Quest port. The music could have been better as well. It has solid core gameplay loop, if you are into casual cooking sims in VR. I struggled in the beginning with the tutorial, but once I got used to the button mapping and understood the gist of it, I went full chef mode and really enjoyed it. It's simple and fun, and it poses a challenge to figure out which alien likes what. Once I started playing, I couldn't stop until my batteries depleted Haha!
Works great and very fun!
Quite a fun cooking game. Can definitely recommend if you have an evening or weekend to spend. Hope the devs add some more variety, as the game can get a bit stale after a while.
I almost returned the game. But I'm glad I tried it out a little more. It has some minor bugs or rather the machine processes don't always run smoothly. But you get used to it pretty quickly. At the beginning I thought to myself, why is everything so unnecessarily complicated? For example, you have to enter four-digit codes to get to goods, or the microwave, where you also have to enter codes instead of simply pressing the appropriate color. Despite all of this, it's really fun after you get used to it for a while. It doesn't quite come close to Horror Bar VR, which is the better game because you're operating machines instead of cooking yourself. But it's worth its price. UPDATE: The culinary Calamity Update is great. Now the game has a much better flow and everything is easy to control. Big Thump up
Extremely fun VR cooking game! ♥ I haven't encountered any problems the current negative reviews have pointed out, and I'm already near the end of the 2nd Week's worth of levels. For those who have said that there isn't a free-movement setting, there is, it's just in accessibility. So, the controls are solid from the get-go (I use a Quest 3 if that matters), have minimal to no lag at all, and are criminally unknown to the majority of the VR community. If you like games that look, feel, and operate similarly to Startenders: Intergalactic Bartenders, I think you'll enjoy this game, and vice versa! I am very much looking forward to future updates and games from this dev team! ♥
Unable to get past the first launch screen. Tired relaunch. Tried verify. Tired reinstall. Asking for refund.
In its core its a cool and fun game. BUT after playing the tutorial i do wonder if the devs even tried playing their own game?!. Because there are just not enough proper ways to actualy move - and thats mindboggling to me! We desperately need the ability to move free using the left stick! When something is out of range right now all you can do is teleport to a fixed spot (pre-choosen, always the same spots in the kitchen) and hope your environment allows it to move far enough to grab things etc. Yes you also can press B to recalibrate after moving back to get closer to things - but that cant be the solution! Another thing i imediately noticed is the lack of any graphic options. there are NONE!!! Specialy the aliasing is very annoying! Give us Antialiasing! Not recommended until they add basic vr functions and settings that are currently missing!
I feel like Astro Chef does this type of gameplay well in the way that it knows how to make a game that could get tedious quickly, feel fresh and new. Trying to figure out each alien's palette while also playing around with experimental foodstyles makes for a fun experience, this is one of the more fun VR cooking sims I've had the opportunity to play. I was able to play this on the Valve Index, so it looks like any issues they were having before have been fixed and adjusted as I had an issue free experience the whole time.
