I have criticisms for this game only because I am absolutely in love with it and want to see it do better. 1 HUGE GLARING CON: Absolutely no save/load system, not even quicksaves. It saves your spot when you close it so you can resume without issue, but accidentally making the wrong choice - whether by accidentally pressing the wrong choice or misunderstanding what that choice means - you have to restart the game completely from the beginning. I've wasted hours doing this. It.. also could really use a more in-depth lore/notes menu so if I miss a line or two of dialogue I'm not completely lost. If this game at least had some sort of system to look at the backlog of what's happened so far, it'd be so much more helpful. It's well written but I feel like the people who made this weren't much into programming - I also don't really understand how my choices lead to certain stats sometimes - In the main story I'll be told that 'most of my supplies were taken', then look to the menu and see I still have almost as much as I had before then. I also feel like romances are kinda fast and sudden sometimes; I barely interracted with Dylan at all and suddenly he wants to make out with me. (Maybe he's just like that, though?) Good things: Complete pacifism - as in, avoiding choices that force you to use violence or killing to solve issues, as well as preventing all deaths and violence - appears to be absolutely an option in this game, and you are uniquely rewarded for taking those choices. This is a HUGE relief for me because being forced into violent choices is a huge anxiety trigger for me and is almost unavoidable in video games outside of cheap technicalities ("I didn't kill them, my AI party member did") besides the notable recent exception of Undertale. Proficency stats and ship status stats actually matter an immense amount. It keeps the story dramatic and stressful when making choices, which keeps me emotionally engaged with what happens. I really only wish there was more options in between time-skips to take the opportunities to talk with my crew before something big and dramatic happens, but even when those events happen, I still usually have the ability to fix it in the way I want to and it works thematically extremely well. The writers knew exactly what they were doing and I feel like it's a crime this hasn't gotten the funding to be the next Mass Effect or something. If you're a fan of Star Trek, you'll probably love this game; major stats seem to relate to different roles in that show (engineering, medicine, navigation, etc.) Things that interest you naturally will aid as stats in your choices a lot. If you know yourself well and know how to play up your character's strengths, you'll be gauranteed to have an amazing journey.
I LOVE THIS GAME SO MUCH!!! The characters are great and complex and I love the development you can give your protag. I feel like the choices are pretty clear (what stat they are using) and the romance felt smoothly integrated into the story.
I love Oscar and Shiori so much! And Victor's romance feels like a hidden one, that I still loved! just ah!
. I felt like the pacing was good, you can befriend people and uncover secrets, stay neutral or choose a side. It feels a bit like Firefly, which is fantastic in my opinion. All in all, I recommend the game if you are looking for a space western adventure.
I'll be honest, when I saw this in my recommendations, I didn't expect much. I'd never heard of it, and with Choice of Games, that usually means it's a hit or a miss. Thankfully, I was pleasantly surprised. Positives: -Decent world building, if you can say "world building" when you're in space. -Story wasn't too hard to follow, yet was still interesting enough to keep me hooked. -Small set of well ranged characters that you can get to know. I liked most of the crew, and a certain space pirate. -There are enough factions that lead me to believe you can get a range of different endings, so there's replay value. Negatives: -It could've used some more character development, honestly. One character is meant to be quite older, and I didn't even realise until half way through the story when she said it herself. -Characters get upset and angry with you, but it doesn't seem to matter. They still behave the same and treat you like a friend. I enjoyed my play through, and I can see myself doing another one. This one is a little bit pricier than other CoG novels I've played, though. I'd give it a 7/10.
Fantastic story with a lot of meaningful (and difficult choices). Not a ton in the way of character development, but I didn't find that too big a problem. Also, despite do just about everything right, saving the day, keeping my ship in one piece and everyone alive, and making sure no one hated me, I got a bad ending anyway. Maybe that's the point, but it didn't feel like that kind of story. Still, I enjoyed the game itself, and I'm about to play through it again making different decisions.
You are a captain of a cargo ship. Your current mission forces you to take a half-year long journey to a faraway station, and bring with you a mysterious cargo, while maneuvering between cultists, anarchists, men in blue, and corporats. It's a nice story about an uneasy task, full of dangers and intrigues. Amazing cast of characters, well-written fractions, and lots of opportunities to shape the exact captain you want to see.
one of my favorite COGs!! this game has great replay value and a really compelling story.
Pretty poor story, no real consequences for your actions and I didn't care for any of the characters or groups.
This is a very good hard sci-fi Choice of Games story. It has lots of interesting situations, choices, and opportunities for role-playing. There is enough characterization and world-building to make the story feel real, but not enough to bog things down.
I 100% recommend this game. I played it through like four times in two days because it was just so captivating. The world-building is great--it reminds me of Firefly/Serenity although it's clearly a different rodeo. I love how diverse of a cast of characters there is--in gender, sexuality, personality, and background. The romancing options are fantastic (at least those I've played through) and they're woven well into the plot of the story; sometimes the romance makes no difference and other times the stories are really only about the romance, but this one presents both in equal measure. All in all, this is the most exhilarating, intriguing, and well-written Choice Of/Hosted games I've played (and I've played a lot).
Really enjoyed the atmosphere and the characters; if you like The Expanse or Firefly, then you'll also like this game.
