Asterix & Obelix XXL 3 – The Crystal Menhir brings the beloved French comic duo back into a colorful, lighthearted action-adventure that aims to capture the spirit of the series with accessible gameplay and cheerful presentation. The story begins when a mysterious letter warns the Gauls of unusual Roman activity and introduces the enigmatic Crystal Menhir, a stone imbued with strange powers. Asterix and Obelix set out on a globe-trotting journey to uncover the truth behind its abilities, meeting familiar faces and clashing with Roman forces along the way. The plot is simple and playful, keeping with the comics’ tone, and it serves mostly to push players into new locales and encounters rather than deepen the narrative. Fans of the franchise will appreciate the faithful humor and character personalities, while newcomers will find a straightforward and family-friendly adventure. The visual presentation is one of the game’s strengths. OSome Studio opted for a vibrant, cartoon-like art direction that mirrors the charm of the original illustrations. Environments such as Gaulish forests, sandy deserts, snowy fields, and Roman encampments are bright and inviting, full of small details that enrich each setting. The characters also animate with expressiveness and exaggeration, which suits the comedic nature of Asterix and Obelix’s antics. Everything in the world—from enemy reactions to environmental interactions—leans toward lively, exaggerated fun. This style makes the game immediately accessible to younger players or anyone seeking a colorful adventure without grim tone or complexity. Gameplay revolves primarily around beat-’em-up action and light puzzle solving. Asterix and Obelix traverse linear levels, break objects, find collectibles, and fight waves of Roman soldiers who come charging at them in large groups. Combat is simple but satisfying in short bursts: you punch, throw enemies, use charge attacks, and occasionally activate special powers granted by the Crystal Menhir. The elemental variations of the menhir—fire, ice, magnetic—add a bit of variety by introducing small environmental puzzles or alternate combat effects. However, the game rarely pushes these mechanics further than surface-level interactions. As a result, the core combat loop can begin to feel repetitive, especially during longer play sessions or for players expecting deeper combat systems and enemy variety. The inclusion of local cooperative multiplayer is one of the most enjoyable aspects of the experience. Playing alongside a friend enhances the simple combat and adds a charming sense of chaos as both Gauls barrel through Roman camps and try out different menhir powers. Co-op transforms the game into a more dynamic and engaging adventure, making it especially appealing for families or casual players looking for a shared experience. While the mechanics don’t gain additional depth in co-op, the social element helps mask some of the repetitiveness and encourages more playful experimentation. Despite the game’s charm, several limitations stand out. Combat lacks strategic depth and rarely evolves beyond basic button-mashing. Enemy encounters tend to blur together due to predictable patterns and limited variation. The level design, though visually appealing, is mostly linear and offers few surprises or complex challenges. Technically, the game can show rough edges in the form of uneven frame rates, stiff animations, and occasional camera quirks that disrupt the otherwise smooth pacing. These issues don’t break the game but remind players that the experience is built on modest production values compared to larger action-adventure titles. Asterix & Obelix XXL 3 succeeds most when approached with the right expectations. It is a light, humorous romp rather than a polished or innovative modern action game. Fans of the comics will enjoy stepping into a faithful adaptation of the world, and casual players—especially younger gamers—will find an approachable, easygoing journey full of colorful locales and slapstick action. For players seeking a deeper combat system, complex puzzles, or ambitious storytelling, the game may feel limited. However, as a nostalgic, family-friendly brawler with co-op charm, it delivers a pleasant and entertaining adventure that captures the heart of its iconic source material, even if it never pushes beyond familiar boundaries. Rating: 6/10
Both prequels had much better gameplay. Two strongest Gaul warriors, can't even jump. Still, doesn't look bad so far
