Aspen: Uncanny Home has a beautifully rendered environment for the player to walk around in. There environment feels oppressive and claustrophobic as you wander between locations in the house wondering where a sound came from or how a doll got into a certain position. For a psychological horror game, this is a great environment, but what this game has in environment, it lacks in player accessibility. The game doesn't give the player direction and leads to aimless wandering in circles around the environment tying to figure out what changed each time and using the left mouse button to zoom in on specific items that change the environment to access the next area. There are times this is cleverly implemented such as a closet that shrinks every time the player walks around the walls or a sudden bowl of eyeballs replacing apples. But more often, I'd find myself left clicking indiscriminately while stuck in rooms because I wasn't given any clue as to what to look at or interact with which led to a LOT of time stuck in a bathroom which I was able to get out of, but I'm not sure if I glitched out or if the exit was intended (either getting stuck inside a wall or being pushed out of the game map). The game also has a lack of options - no ability to remap controls or change volume for example. There is a brightness option at the opening screen of the game, but it cannot be adjusted within the game itself. The game window also closes by pressing Esc or by choosing the 'quit' option from the menu (bound to Tab) BUT the game continues running in the background. The only way I could fully close the game was to either alt+tab and stop the game through Steam or to end it in task manager. Overall, I can't recommend Aspen: Uncanny Home in the state it is in. The game needs a little UI love and some narrative work so the player has more clue about what's going on. Maybe a crosshair dot or something so the player knows what the left click is actually targeting would be helpful (dot, flashlight, highlight interactable items, something!). If there were some of these fixes, I'd come back to finish this game in a heartbeat for the environment alone - and to try and figure out why scary boot man keeps bouncing my head on the floorboards like a basketball. There IS something to this game that is good, but with the UI issues and lack of direction, it's often difficult to find.
I am normally understanding and can even give a recommendation on a game even if it isn't my cup of tea but this game felt like an attack on my soul. I don't know if it is glitched or broken or what. You have no directions. All you can do is walk around and zoom. It starts out pretty creepy you are looking around kind of learning about a story of some murder. It starts to drag out and you go well maybe the game is glitched. BAM you get randomly attacked with a pretty good jump scare. Okay okay i like this now. You now spend 10 minutes in a locked bathroom trying to escape. You manage to get out of a locked bathroom after getting attacked but it feels like you may have glitched your way out. You keep playing and you notice small things changing in the environment after a couple minutes of playing. Well it can't be glitched then. You can't be sure what is causing the changes. Is it the amount you are walking? Is it what you are zooming into and looking at? You have no clue. By the time you are in the attic you have sunk so much time in that you need to try to finish. You start to think is this a psychological horror experiment that is being played on you? Finally you give up and you look at the amount you have been playing and it is 2 hours and only about 15 minutes of any actual game play. I normally post a link with my game play at the end but I wanted to get this out before anyone else took a chance on this. I will edit and add it once I upload it. If you did manage to somehow play this and beat it then you are a hero. https://youtu.be/SaaeQf-2NrA
I play a lot of horror games on my YT channel and I have to say this is one of the best games for atmosphere I've played so far, good graphics and lighting help create a pretty 'on edge' feeling whilst walking around and the constant noises throughout keep you on your toes. You do walk around a fair bit and sometimes it's difficult to know what to do next and/or what you did in the first place to progress but I've already played a few games like this and I would say this game does the process a lot better than some of the others. I have yet to complete the game so I will update my review once I've finished it, but the first part of my play through is below and will give you a feel for what the game is like. :EDIT: So I've finished the game and although in parts it can get a little monotonous, overall I would say a pretty solid game, the jump scares happen a lot towards the end which is always good, the story line could of been a little better as I still don't fully understand what was going on, also the repetitive man beating you up was done a little too much, don't get me wrong the jump scare still got me but it was like "AHHH...oh it's just you again" which I doubt is the reaction you're going for. Also the ending was a little...I guess boring considering everything that built up to it. Definitely worth getting as the atmosphere alone is worth it. https://youtu.be/RmFDMt6PJy8 - Part 1 https://youtu.be/pJNkGx10_j4 - Part 2 https://youtu.be/schZAxdPqwI - Part 3
