In Final Fantasy XII, I wanted to like the story. Please note that the only time I finished FFXII was the original North American PS2 version. The story was probably very likable in that game. I feel like most people remember the game for being superficially similar to Star Wars. FFXII is not, in fact, Star Wars. Why do so many people remember it that way, then? I played the game (again, the PS2 version) for over a hundred hours. My more completion hungry friends in those days had play times twice as long. I think that the primary reason that FFXII's story lost me was that I would see a cutscene, lose tens of hours to crawling through dungeons and grinding, and then be surprised that there was still a plot when the next cutscene happened. Ultimately, I like FFXII. I still think it suffered from giving the player too much. I get a similar feeling from Ashes of War. The story never fully lost me. That's probably because the game is mostly story. It's easy to retain the broad strokes. It's harder to retain the details. I can tell that the writer has a love for worldbuilding. The setting feels very lived in. They might love worldbuilding a little too much. The writing seemed desperate to share as much detail as possible about the mundanities of life in the space war. There are long passages about food and life support and booze and the media that the crew enjoys. I found myself using the log function more in this visual novel than I ever have just to make sure I understood things. I can also tell that the writer has an affinity for flirtatious banter. There's a lot of it. Don't get me wrong. This is the perfect kind of game for a writer to indulge in that sort of thing. As with the worldbuilding exposition, I feel like these long dialogues verge on excessive. Why should you kill your darlings? They're your darlings for a reason. It's baffling that, in a game that already offers so much story, there are also space navy battles. They are turn based. They happen on a hex grid. There's a rock-paper-scissors system that offers some types of ships advantages over others. Relative to the rest of the game, there are not many of these battles. A couple of the missions were fun and interesting. I'm not an SRPG guy. I found most of these missions kind of boring. The game offers you the opportunity to skip these combat missions without consequences, so this part of the game isn't intrusive. Of course, none of this would be worth mentioning if I didn't like this game enough to recommend it. My favorite things about this game are the characters. Having good characters is an easy way to earn my admiration. The characters in this game engage you with their personalities. They have narrative throughlines. They have goals and desires. That's more than you get from most erotic games. The story is mostly static, but getting to know these characters is a lot of fun. Normally, I might prefer having the opportunity to focus on characters I find the most appealing. Ashes of War let me sit with characters I didn't initially like and let them grow on me. I like that approach. Some of the art, especially some of the background art, made me squint and scrutinize. There were a few art assets that sent my mind to an uncomfortable uncanny valley. Thankfully, I really enjoyed most of the art in this game. Most of the characters benefit from an appealing visual design. I'm not necessarily even talking about sex appeal. The colors are good. The uniforms make sense in the context of the setting. The characters who aren't in uniform wouldn't look out of place in a beloved JRPG. To be clear: the sex appeal is definitely there. If you like looking at cartoon women, this game probably has you covered. If you have a taste for this kind of game, I would recommend Ashes of War. If you happen to like hard sci-fi technobabble and turn-based SRPG battles, you might even like it more than I did. If you're looking for quick titillation, there are many other games that better provide that. Those other games often struggle to provide thoughtful plotlines and interesting characters, which Ashes of War has in spades.
A well done game with cute girls and a captivating story Sergeant Miller best guy
A wonderful little gem of a VN, great mix of humor and heavier aspects of human interactions, fun enough combat, cute characters and an ending which is often a rarity with H-games even if it isnt the strongest act.
I wasn't expecting much when i bought this game really. But wow can i say my expectations where blown out of the water. I bought this game why it was on sale on a whim. And must i say this was an exceptional Vn Honestly i would have even probably played this without the nsfw stuff but that definitely is the drawing in and selling point for this kind of games and there much of what you would expect in this game when it comes to nsfw stuff. But there where times when i was way more invested in the combat and the story than those points and it felt like they would sometimes just add in Nsfw stuff since it had been awhile since the last one and i would have maybe liked abit more of a build up but i cant fault them for that because at the end of the day this is one of those games and i greatly enjoyed my time with it. ALSO IT WAS WAY LONGER THAN I WAS EXSPECTING IT TO BE which i can appreciate a lot.
Writing so good that I forget that theres porn. Or maybe im just a prude captain idk.
This is a pretty good visual novel with some cool tactical gameplay to make it more engaging. The adult content was ironically pretty mid, but the relationship and flirting was great though Eva, Rachel and Nora have more complex, engaging and complete storyline and personalities than the other characters you meet. The ending was cute and very welcomed.
I haven't played this type of game in awhile and when I first found it by seeing a fanart of one of the character, I came across this game, and when I saw it was for sale I decide to give this game a chances, and boy did it not disappoint, I absolutely love this game.
Great story. Great cast of characters with fun chemistry. And great music to set up the atmosphere.
Pretty good love the combat and the story but ending feels a bit rushed with many blanks. Still would recommend.
