Militia is a unique turn-based strategy game with minimalist graphic design featuring many pictograms that might make this game look like a weird complex Chess variation. But that isn't true. The gameplay follows the "Easy to learn, hard to master" scheme, as you'll learn almost everything about the gameplay mechanics in 10 minutes, then you are thrown into randomly generated levels. The challenge there is getting to the highest rank possible - every won game gets you closer to rank promotion, every lost game gets you farther. Rank determines the difficulty of generated levels and provides a big challenge for everybody, as you'll have to keep a winrate better than 50%. While you'll be trying, you'll realize strategies and combos with specific units that you haven't thought before and... well, you'll get better. There are two modes, light mode that is best for new players (but also provides a challenge) and dark mode, which was introduced later in Militia (but on Steam it's a expansion that is already included with the basic game). Fighting both orcs and undead is really tough job, you'll often find yourself thinking your plan for some time, as there is no way back after you take your turn. There isn't an undo button, every mistake comes with a regret (and lose, and getting closer to losing your rank). The whole presentation, from graphics to sounds, is simply awesome. Graphics are great for the game's intention, you'll just learn few pictograms, falling in love in it meanwhile. Militia is a big surprise for me, as it's simply great game. It features balanced difficulty and it's a pleasure to play for everybody who wants a casual strategy game, or for those who are alone and would like to play a board game.
Fun, simple game with a good soundtrack. However, the game is very unforgiving. No undo button, no restart level button, takes more XP than it gives, and one mistake could ruin the entire round for you.
I need more games like this. Tight design, playable in short bursts, tactics with close to no randomness yet not too hard on the brain, doesn't outstay its welcome, fulfills its promises. Fantastic work.
A charming, deceptively simple game. Easy to learn, difficult to master. You pit three random player-controlled units against a much larger number of weaker enemies. You have trickier and more powerful options, but a single mistake means losing 1/3 of your firepower. The game has an elegant tutorial and is very quick to learn. Its ranking system accomplishes two difficult tasks at once: motivation to get better at the game, and an effective difficulty curve. You'll probably blast through the first few ranks easily, but soon you'll find yourself in challenging environments that push you to master the mechanics. I can confidently say this regardless of your skill level or aptitude for this sort of game. Overall, a great buy for the price. You can play one of two distinct rulesets, either Light or Dark. Light offers much simpler mechanics, with units that jump and attack in easy-to-understand ways. Dark offers complicated individual pieces that do things like push other units, generate explosives, and warp across the edges of the board. I am excited to see how many hours of play this game offers me.
A truly dynamite strategy game! A simple ruleset with only one board but variable gamepiece placement makes this a very fun - albeit challenging - exercise in logic and planning. Far less variety among moves and fewer pieces than chess leads to briskly paced games that reward focus on necessity and encourage a flexible tactical approach to achieving the goal: eliminating all the enemy captains. I am so far (3 hours played) quite enjoying the smooth difficulty scaling, but can already see both the enemy quantity and type making my further progress hard-fought and well earned. I have zero reservations recommending this at full price, much less on sale! Militia is a carefully executed and interesting take on small-scale tactics that is well worth both the cost to purchase and the time to play.
Its alternate chess Each piece moves & eliminates other pieces in a different pattern (just like in chess) The game comes with two variants 'light' and 'dark', each one has a different lineup of pieces. Unlike Chess, you win by eliminating all of the enemy 'boss pieces' Its fun, if you pay attention you can win reliably, and avoid losing any of your pieces. If you lose, it was because you weren't paying attention. I'd recommend this to everybody!
Thumbs up! Don’t be fooled by the simple graphics. It’s better than it looks. The way the pieces move may draw some comparisons to chess, but you only get two or three pieces at a time and all the pieces move each turn. It starts off easy at first, but the difficulty keeps increasing as you win more games. The standard game uses the pieces known as the Light World, but there is also an option to play with a different set of pieces known as the Dark World. Either way, it’s a good challenge.
juego simple de estrategia que te pone a pensar pero es como querer invadir a los yanquis, siempre vas a perder. ¯\_( ͡❛ ͜ʖ ͡❛)_/¯
Militia is a simple, tile-based strategy game. Each time you start a new game, you go through three floors of randomly-generated battles, with three units out of five classes on your side and a bunch of enemies with an equal amount of diversity on their side. Everything moves and attacks according to specific, easily-understood rules; for example, the Warriors can move two spaces and cleave all three spaces in front of them, and the Imps can only move two spaces diagonally. The goal is to kill all enemy captains marked with a star, but going straight for them is often a bad idea since all units die in a single hit. Keeping track of areas the enemy can attack is as crucial, if not moreso, as it is in more mathematically-complex tactical RPGs like Fire Emblem or Advance Wars. If you manage to get through all three rounds, you gain EXP, and if you gain enough EXP, your rank goes up and so does the difficulty of future games. Losing, on the other hand, makes you lose EXP, which can be a bit upsetting since it feels like an arbitrary time-wasting punishment. Last but not least, there's also "Dark World" mode which has entirely different units from the normal game, as well as Endless and Timed modes. Overall, this game is great if you want something quick to pick up, puzzle through a few rounds, then put down for another time.
