Well I was all excited to play this game when I read the discussion groups on the web. And I really enjoyed it until... Until it got so incredibly slow that I could not get through a minor battle in less than 10 minutes. It also lost any charm after a certain point as side-quests became few and far between, then non-existent. Just go from one major boss battle to the next. I finally quit playing as it was just too tedious going from battle to battle just to level up, then another 10-15 minutes trying to beat the boss who is ridiculously strong and ends up killing every party member just before his health runs out. Such a bummer as this was so fun to begin with. I'm sorry to say I would not recommend this game even at the really cheap price I paid for it (I think $2 or something like that).
Originally released in 4 parts, Aldorlea now brings Arvale to Steam as a full game ---- and it's a very good presentation. Opening at the castle of Entoque we find our main character, Duncan, who is a gardener for the king but has apparently been at the center of world saving activities in years gone by. The problem is that he has no memory of what transpired. And so the story begins as the king sends him on a simple mission, and Duncan slowly learns more about his past, and how to uncover the details ---- which is critical because dark forces are gathering once again. There are a ton of things to do (with a good number of side quests), things to find, people to recruit and interact with, dungeons/mazes to explore, monsters to deal with, weapons and spells to master, and a narrator to interact with as you move through the land. The narrator is full of good humor, and adds an interesting perspective to the events of the game, as well as being very helpful to the beginning player. There is as much interaction with non playing characters as I've seen in this type of game in a very long time ---- but it all adds to the exploring aspect. And this is a game where anything and everything needs to be examined for clues and information. The artwork is beautiful throughout with battle scenes being especially well done. Music is excellent without being obtrusive. And there are plenty of cut scenes adding to the story. The care and attention to detail in Arvale are easy to see and certainly enjoy throughout this well crafted game that would be a fine choice for any player of any age, of any experience. A first-rate and engaging rpg adventure.
On sale for pretty cheap so I thought I'd give a chance. No regrets so far. Something I'm surprised no one has mentioned yet is the Music! I'm not sure where these tracks came from, but many of them (the castle music and the first town in particular) are fantastic. Happy that the creators took the time to procure (or hire/make? I have no idea since there are no title credits) great tracks, a total must have for an RPG and in this case, it definitely ticks off that box. Looking forward to the rest!

Very boring. Arvale 1/10 Heisen
RPG Maker strikes again! Arvale is one of hundreds of low effort retro-pixel RPG Maker asset/construction kit flips spamming the Steam catalog, made with the RPG Maker video game construction kit... in their own words, "Our easy to use tools are simple enough for a child." Like all RPG Maker "games", this is essentially a bunch of low quality/canned assets from RPG Maker coupled with a cringeworthy high school anime club fan fiction. As with all RPG Maker games, the poor quality engine displays badly in fullscreen and doesn't have full HD support or any graphics tweaking options, making this unacceptable for any dedicated modern PC gamer. The point can be made that the intention of RPG Maker is to make demos and small games to pass around friends, and shouldn't be used for "professional" game development. This time Andorlea/Warfare/SimProse/whatever other shell account this guy uses to try hide his identity has once more stamped out a painfully generic copy + paste RPG Maker asset flip. There's a completely crap attempt at humour amongst the asset flipped game visuals, and the usual bad anime fan-fic plot. It's horribly basic, riddled with grammatical and spelling errors, full of stock copy + pasted RPG Maker assets... no real game development has taken place here, this is just a cash grab, it's shovelware polluting Steam for profit. This "developer" has dumped over 100 copy+pasted RPG Maker asset flips onto Steam, and keeps pumping out minimum viable product RPG Maker asset flips as rapidly as possible to try gouge gamers. We must ask why this ongoing pollution has any serious value for gamers or the gaming industry. This kind of cash grab construction kit shovelware from bad actors like Andorlea gives amateur developers a bad name. This pollution takes marketing space away from genuine indie developers who are doing the right thing, and making real games instead of copying+pasting premade assets in a children's video game construction kit. It makes it harder for gamers to find genuinely made games. This pollution is harmful to Steam, to gamers and the gaming industry. Like most RPG Maker shovelware and asset flips, the game features extremely low quality copy + pasted 2D retro pixel art, looks awful, and has even worse gameplay. RPG Maker is an absolutely terrible construction kit, and never results in games of any reasonable quality or value to gamers. Reviewing SteamDB to check how popular this game was with players reveals a surprise... there's a very healthy spike in player counts for the game. But this only appears around the same time that trading cards were applied to the game... so this is just card idlers getting their cards and moving on. A closer look at the numbers shows the game just has a couple of players every week running up the game and idling it for cards, then deleting it. We must ask how it benefits gamers for there to be so many games like this, with no merit as a serious game, that only generate sales from people idling and selling the trading cards. Arvale has the far too high price of around $5 USD, it's not worth it given the defects and shortcomings with the product, especially considering the sheer number of completely free, much higher quality games on Steam. Gamers who want a good retro JRPG experience would be better off playing the originals, like Final Fantasy, Star Ocean or Chrono Trigger. Note: This game features a number of suspicious, likely fake positive reviews. The reviews all appear at almost exactly the same time, precisely 3 days after the game launched on Steam (days 0-2, practically no reviews, suddenly, all at the same time, ~10 reviews drop!), all have a direct Steam purchase of the game, and all have very similar wording and writing style. This is highly unusual given the very low quality of the game and poor player counts. The "Positive" review score on this game should be taken with a large grain of salt. This might be done to deceive and scam gamers into paying for a bad product.
Unfortunately this is going to be a short review, as the game is sadly quite buggy and constantly crashing. It's a pain in the arse to get it running, and once you overcome one problem another springs up to replace it. It's a pity, as the game is fairly amusing and charming, but there doesn't seem a whole lot of point going into detail about it. Of the 1 hour or so play-time I've clocked up, I'd say it was a max of about 20 minutes actually spent able to run it. It controls well, looks nice enough and has quite bouncy tunes, yet I can hardly recommend it when you might not be able to play it.
“Arvale” could be characterized as a standard JRPG with decent gameplay, relatively good graphics and funny story. The protagonist, a gardener called Duke, is apparently a great hero who had saved the kingdom from terrible evil – but the problem is that he remembers absolutely nothing about it. So he needs to set out on a quest to find his lost memory and recover his heroic skills, all the while being confronted by facts that he was probably responsible for dooming an entire village or abandoning his elven girlfriend and so on. On the technical side, the game has nicely assembled and rich environment, standard music and workable combat system, even though it gets a bit grinding at times. There is one serious technical problem though: the game is incredibly lagging to the point of being unplayable, fortunately this can be bypassed by running it in administrator mode. Once this is sorted out, Arvale becomes quite an enjoyable game of high adventure spiced with cool humor.
