I love surrealistic games. A friend gifted Arktrum to me, so I was really looking forward to play it.
Design of Arktrum
Not much to say about the design. You see the pictures and that tells you already how beautiful this game is. It is even better in motion with all this interactable fragments floating around and the more or less destructable structures. Thanks to the amazing visual depth it can be tricky to find your way in some situations. But thats bearable since the (first) maps are not that big. On the other hand it opens nice possibilities for hidden passages. And I have to add somethinig rare: In general I turn off the music of a game even before I start for the first time. During my first run in Arktrum I decided that I want to play it with music. Unluckily you can't switch it back on during the game. But this is one of the very few games I love playing with music. It gives an extra kick for the great atmosphere. Awesome.
The Controls
The kind of controlling is not new. But uncommon. You use the left and right mouse buttons for your left and your right arm, wasd to stear around and shift for switching between grabing and boxing. ...oh yes, almost forgot: spacebar for dashing. I have no clue why spacebar is so easy to forget about. Maybe I was too busy to not bump into enemies. The stearing itself feels thanks to the inertia force like a shopping cart. But thats intended and ok like it is. What I really had some problems with was to hit the target (surroundings and enemies) in the right spot. So sometimes it bursts in a great explosion of fragments instantly, sometimes its just pushed away and sometimes its not hit at all and sticks on you.
The checkpoints
I have no clue how big the further levels are or how extensive the whole game is. But in the beginning you probably die from time to time. Which leads back to the last checkpoint. Where are these checkpoint? I have no clue. During play I never knew from where I would have to start when I die. So mostly it bacame a bad surprise how far away I have to restart. This could have been organized much better. Maybe a marker, or at least a little "whenever you see this sign don't turn off your PC"-icon. It lead me to a slight frustration.
Frustration
Speaking of frustration... I started the game and found the first hidden passage to the skillpoint very soon. Also I found very soon the "gap" in the passage, that led outside the playing area. At first I wasn't sure if this was intended as a special feature. But after floating around for a while I figured out, that its just bad Mapdesign. Luckily I found the gap again and could go back inside. When I continued the Tutorial to the point where you learn to grab, my arm grabbed something on the other end of the map, drew me this direction and I was stuck in a corner. So I had to restart. This time when I collected the first (unhidden) skillpoint I realized, that the former skillpoint was still aktive. So I could not evolve and continue the tutorial. After a few restarts I found out, that I have to Exit and restart the whole game to fix this bug. I did. Next try. After a few little fights - I don't know how I managed - one of my hands was "broken". The arm did not stretch proper anymore and was like bended more upside. After a short while the second "broke" too. So I wasn't able to fight or grab anymore. At this point, I was already frustrated enough to stop playing. Not even the tutorial finished and such a mass of bugs already is a very bad sign for me. Nevertheless I tried a bit more to give the game a chance. A few times my arms grabbed some far distant points and drew me there, but I was always able to reach that point, let go and go on with the game. But when I died after the second gate and the respawn point set me back to a point even far before I opened the gate, the frustration won.
Why?
It is such a pity, even a shame, that such an interesting and beautiful game is in such a bad bugged and glitched state. Ok, I am a bug Magnet. But it's rare even for me, that I have so much trouble even in early access games. And Arktrum is NOT an ea! Why? It has so much potential to be a trippy nice game. Why was it build so careless? Why istn't it in ea till all bugs are fixed? Why this price? I am really lucky and thankfull it was gifted to me, so I don't have to refund it. Its always hurting to refund such nice little gems.
For full functionality of this site it is necessary to enable ...
I don't really like to write too much about the developers, since a review should be about the game and not the persons behind ...it without reason. I don't know anything about Square Gem Software. But I tried to google them. I got an result for their website even. Google titles it as "For full functionality of this site it is necessary to enable ...". The description says "For full functionality of this site it is necessary to enable JavaScript. Here are the instructions how to enable JavaScript in your web browser." I still remember the Web 1.0 times, when you "have to use the IE in resollution XYZ". Well, this is even worse. Beside that the frontpage is mainly blank, building a website consisting of JS is the same like building a Website completely consisting of flash. This gives a REAL bad sign for the quality of their/his work and how much fixing to await for this game. As soon as this game is fixed I would recommend it. But I fear my sad conclusion at this point can only be: Why????
Injouable. 7 € ce jeu ? il y a des jeux moins chers qui sont plus travaillés que ça
Beautiful graphics and an ethereal title song are not enough to save a game. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aXje_5-nUTw If you want to see my first impressions as they happened, watch this video. Arktrum is a fascinating idea: WASD to move, left click to control your left hand right click to control your right. Shift to switch from Punches to Grabs. And Space to dash in a direction. Continuing momentum adds difficulty, especially combined with the dash. Add a passable skill tree for good measure. The problem is that it falls short, enemies respawn and can gang up on you easily, and checkpoints are seemingly scarce. To Arktrum's credit, I quickly forgot about the *necessary* dash/evade mechanic. If you decide to pick it up, don't make that mistake. However, in learning this when I revisited it after my stream, I got past the blue key door and had a glitch fling me back to the start of the map before crashing the game. It might have just been bad luck on my part, but that was enough for me to stand by the negative first impression I made. Hopefully someone out there enjoys this game. There certainly seems to be something interesting here. Sadly, I am not that person.
Not recommended for most players, recommended for a select few. I have mixed feelings about this game. I have played 4 levels and died a lot of times. I don't mind dying, it's just that you spawn so far back, it gets anoying. There should be more savepoints. Doing the same part over and over again gets boring. Dying at the endboss of a level (and that happens a lot) makes you do the entire level again. Once you get the feel for the controls, it is fun to play, but the game is hard and unforgiving. It gets a bit easier when you have a lot of upgrades. The graphics are very good and the soundtrack is nice. I miss the health and mana bar/counter, this would improve the game a lot. Going slow and reversing when enemies come at you is the easiest way to get around, but that makes replaying parts even longer. Personally, I will keep playing the game from time to time. The mechanics are fun and the levels look great. It is kinda addictive and I want to see more of it. Because of the difficulty, it gives a feeling of acomplishment when you advance to the next level/spawnpoint. If you don't mind playing for many hours without a lot of progress and you have the patience to learn where each enemy is, then this is a fun game to check out when on sale. If you are a casual gamer or a gamer who likes a lot of fast action, stay far away from this game.
