My friend hosts our world and every time he saves and quits then loads the lobby back up I lose the last 15-20 minutes of MY gameplay. Even when I click save it doesn't work. I saw a recent post from the developers on Reddit and left a comment there with no response, same with no response in the Steam discussion board. If I can get my problem fixed I'm willing to give it another shot, I WANT to like this game, but not being able to ever save my progress in co-op makes this unplayable. Regardless, the scenery is nice, but everything else about this game feels bland. Especially the confusing menus and UI. This game released into Early Access in 2014, and now 12 years later, why does it feel like its still in alpha? :/
Not worth it — poor UI and confusing from the start Within the first few minutes, it was clear the game does a poor job of getting you started. The guidance is minimal and leaves you guessing what you're supposed to do, which makes the early experience frustrating rather than engaging. The UI doesn't help either — it feels unintuitive and gets in the way rather than supporting the gameplay. For a game that should be easing you in, it fails at the basics. Not recommended. There are better options out there for the price.
Boring. The sled moves so slow, the landscape you traverse is very bland (well, it's the arctic so that's justified), and it feels like there is nothing of interest to do. Like sure, you can build and plant and fish, feed the dogs, but everything feels a bit pointless? Speaking of dogs - you can name them yourself, but they look identical - exact same fur pattern, just in slightly different shades. Worst of all however are the notes you can find scattered - the most trite, pseudo-poetic, wannabe-philosophical text morsels I ever encountered in a video game. They really feel more like a punishment than a reward for exploring.
First things first, I named my sled-dogs Svanna, Svetlana, Angrboda, and Torbin- and they are the best doggos! The most striking feature of this game is the map- it's a large nearly flat snow-covered island of tundra, not that you'll see much grass; that makes all the landmarks features easy to see at long distances. It's no mystery that the primary gameplay loop is making your way over ice floes and past deep water to reach any and every landmark you can find. These are where you find the materials and blueprints to advance in the game. The other part is building a base where you can use your gathered materials to make money and advance in technology and utilities- in this way, just like the large landmark strewn map, it's very much like Subnautica, for the better. There's not so many different materials with which to craft so many different items- it's vastly simplified, and that's to its benefit, because there are only a few select items that are best for advancing in the game relatively quickly. The rest is an indulgence for the players sense of base-building and interior decorating. An interesting bit of gameplay design is that you can place "automated" extraction machines that basically "upload" materials to your inventory, but it's not an automation game like in Factorio- no conveyor belts nor trains for example... The main goal of the game is to find the question mark on the map, gather what you need through exploring, gathering, and crafting, until you can uncover the document-based mystery of the game. In the meantime, there's so many interesting sights that the island is like a museum of ideas, artifacts, and stories related to exploring and inhabiting the Arctic. A personal goal I strived for was, as an after-game reward, making a glider, so I could tour the island at leisure and enjoy the scenery.
