The old gods have forgotten this land. No one could save our people when darkness started spreading and collecting human souls for its army. Odallus is a classic exploration/action game, inspired by Ghosts’n Goblins, Demon’s Crest and Castlevania.

Much more clunky and aggravating to play than actually hard. Yes, you can learn to use the less than stellar controls and come to terms with your character's huge hitbox. But I can't see any reason why you shouldn't play some better game instead.
Demons Crest BR com cara de Castlevania. Bão demais.
Odallus: The Dark Call is a perfect game that pays homage to the NES games in the right way: by discarding what made them tedious and tiresome, and embracing what made them memorable and unique. It’s not often that I see a flawless execution of an attempt to recreate the NES formula; thus, I can wholeheartedly say that JoyMasher is a master of their craft. The game is not simple enough to breeze through, but it’s not complicated or difficult enough to bore you, either. At first glance, the trailer could give you the idea that you’re looking at a metroidvania title, but Odallus: The Dark Call is a straightforward platformer that heavily encourages exploration since there are many secrets to uncover, some of which are even mandatory for progress. If you rush through the game, it indirectly tells you to go back and explore the previous levels to unlock the remaining secrets that lead to hidden levels. Then, and only then, are you allowed to face the final boss. Apart from hidden levels, there are health and carrying capacity upgrades for sub-weapons, and direct upgrades to your armor and sword. The mandatory abilities that are required for progression, such as dashing and double jumping, are obtained automatically on normal mode through minimal exploration; however, if you’re playing on veteran, which is the name for the hard mode, you’ll have to do more than exploring the areas. Veteran mode is worth mentioning due to its way of handling the difficulty alone. It doesn’t decrease the damage output of your sword or increase the attack power of the enemies; it completely changes the level and enemy layout, as well as adding new puzzles to provide you with fair challenges along the way. Although it is heavily inspired by not-so-fair titles like Ghosts ‘n Goblins, the difficulty of Odallus, even on veteran mode, is quite fair and doesn’t rely on trial-and-error technique. Aesthetically, it is surely inspired by the Castlevania and Demon’s Crest, but the gameplay is quite different than those titles, all thanks to the mobility upgrades that it provides you along the way. It is also worth mentioning that both the story and the cutscenes contain lots of Berserk references, which is practically the main reason why it got my attention in the first place. Since it’s a platformer that is heavily inspired by the NES titles, it would be wise not to expect much from the story, but it’s still good nonetheless. The soundtrack is also decent, but the gameplay is where Odallus shines best.
TL;DR
A perfect recreation of the classic NES titles. It is heavily inspired by Castlevania and Demon’s Crest, but adds its own twist into the mix by providing mobility upgrades that make it stand apart from being a mere carbon copy. With lots of Berserk references and gameplay that heavily encourages exploration, Odallus: The Dark Call is a title that should be experienced by every NES enthusiast out there.
🧿 A solid retro-like platformer in a dark fantasy setting, inspired by 8-bit titles. Explore maze locations, farm currency, and discover secrets. It looks great, sounds nice, and controls surprisingly well (though for some reason, people say otherwise). There are small upgrades, useful secondary weapons, and interesting bosses. Indie games in this genre are often unbalanced and lackluster (just look at the gameplay-awful «Oniken» from the same dev), but this one isn't all that bad and is a good example. It's not perfect, as some subtle secrets are necessary for progression, there are some tricky moments (traps, not unfair platforming), and the final boss is a test of your patience, but it's far from bad. If you get stuck, it's best to look for guides or walkthroughs, otherwise you'll waste a lot of time wandering through the levels.
🔰Odallus: The Dark Crawl🔰
- Odallus: The Dark Call
- Odallus: The Dark Call
Odallus is a side-scroller with RPG elements created by JoyMasher in a retro style. The protagonist goes through many stages inspired by old Castlevania games, collecting resources and a few upgrades while searching for secrets and fighting some difficult and unfair bosses. The simple and smooth gameplay is undoubtedly fun, but one can notice that the software engine is very, very crude. The result is a game with unnecessary limitations and several technical problems that will follow your tough gameplay and more than once will hurt your enjoyment. After facing multiple bugs regarding the saved progress, I have to consider this game too technically problematic to recommend.
This is the kind of retro action game your dad swears games used to be like, except this one actually is good. Great level variety, crunchy combat and a soundtrack that sounds like a haunted Famicom trying its best. Some backtracking feels a bit “mandatory cardio” and the hitboxes occasionally cosplay as suggestions, but the vibe carries it. [8/10]
