Ara: History Untold is a really fresh take on the 4X genre in a few ways, mainly the economy. Its detailed economy really grabbed me, as well as its unique map generation and the way tiles work. I highly recommend this game to anyone who enjoys Civ-like games and detailed economic management. It has a few minor issues at the moment, but the devs are super open about development and feedback (especially on the Discord server).
The game has promise, there is a lot about it that works. Ultimately though, I cannot recommend this game. The core issue is the crafting/production chain system. It's not that it is inherently bad, but there is just far too much of it. It's all you do. I'm not exaggerating, nearly every building/improvement (these have been merged into one in a land use system that I like but could be a lot more complex if it wasn't utterly dominated by crafting) is just a link in the production chain. Build simple tools here, turn them into more complex tools, then combine those into simple goods, which then need to be combined into more complex goods, and on and on. It's not a 4X game, it's a reskinned factory simulator.

14 on sale1 answered “not sold”0 we did not ask
The 1 “not sold” market is read from the Steam price pass of Aug 31: that day the store answered for this game elsewhere and gave no price there. The 14 priced markets are the same rows as the table above — each the latest price we hold, dated here when it is older than that pass. The 0 marked “not asked” were not put to this store at all — either it has no storefront there or we do not collect it yet, and neither is a statement about the game. A refusal is a refusal on one day; a store can list a title again tomorrow.

There is a good game inside here somewhere with great historical flavour. But it's buried behind a very poor interface. And the pacing of doing various tasks inside the game seems off to me.
It has a steep learning curve and some minor quirks, but on the whole it's a fantastic 4X (sandbox) game.
Better then CIV7 overall. More micromanaging and planning but its got that one more turn feeling for sure.
ARA: History Untold is a breath of fresh air for the grand strategy genre. Combining the depth of classic civilization-building games with modern innovations, it delivers a truly immersive and strategic experience that rewards creativity as much as careful planning. From the very first moments, the game impresses with its stunning visuals and lovingly detailed world. Every city, landscape, and unit feels alive a vivid tapestry that evolves as your civilization grows. The attention to detail in terrain, architecture, and environmental design really makes history come to life in a fresh, almost painterly way. What stands out most is the turn system. Unlike the traditional “one player at a time” structure, ARA uses a simultaneous turn mechanic that keeps the pacing smooth and engaging. This small but significant change eliminates downtime and makes each round feel dynamic and strategic. No more waiting your decisions truly play out in real time with everyone else’s. The freedom of choice is another high point. Rather than pushing players toward a single “right” way to win, ARA encourages experimentation and alternate histories. You can lead your civilization through peace, innovation, or conquest, but the path you take truly feels your own. The adaptive AI and event-driven storytelling give the world a living, responsive feel your decisions matter, and the consequences are both logical and satisfying. Music and atmosphere also deserve praise. The score is uplifting and grand without ever feeling overwhelming, perfectly complementing the sense of exploration and progress that defines the game. Overall, ARA: History Untold succeeds in blending innovation with familiarity. It invites players to not just replay history, but rewrite it in their own image. Whether you’re a long-time fan of strategy games or a newcomer drawn to its fresh vision, ARA is absolutely worth your time.
I get to about turn 500 and then my food stores resets to zero (both the stored and per turn amount). This prevents me from building anything and I can't continue with the game.
I didn't buy Ara when it launched. But with the 1.4 update and 50% off I picked it up. The game is unique compared to Humankind and Age of Wonder and Civ 5 (the others I did not play). I like how cities build and develop. How resources work. Tech is interesting. The game is deep and look forward to exploring more.
