«Antares»
Everyone's going to mention that this is by a single developer. Is that really relevant? Antares is okay. But it's only okay. It's rather small, a little limited, has some poor design choices and very repetitive enemies. It's perfectly fun for what it is and I enjoyed playing it. However, the common refrain is going to be "But it's by one guy! It's amazing for a game by only one dev!". That's not a feature, that's an excuse. There are upgrades for your weapon, but you won't really notice. It still took two or three shots to the head to kill the basic zombie-type of enemy. After upgrading the weapon multiple times, it still took the same amount of shots. I've seen some suggestion that the difficulty of the enemies scales over time so that might negate the benefit of the upgrades. Then what's the point? It can be somewhat tricky to find your way around and you'll get lost. Most modern games have some kind of navigation cues in their design. Whether it's lighting guiding you to the right path or sights and sounds, there's usually something to keep you moving. Antares doesn't have this. The only way you'll know you're in a new area is because there are enemies to kill. This isn't terrible, but it can mean you'll do a lot of backtracking just to find your way around. The enemies are boring. Yeah, they look quite nice, but the animation isn't brilliant and there simply isn't enough variety. You'll get bored of killing the same zombie-types over and over again. The later enemies are pretty good and there's some nice variation in their movement and attacks, but there just isn't much variety overall. There's an interesting feature in the power shutdowns. Everything gets darker and you need to be quiet for fear of attracting a horde. But this feature isn't linked to what's happening, it's just time-based. You walk round a corner into a big group and pow... powerdown. You can't not shoot them. So I found myself just stopping and waiting for these periods to be over. This is what Antares is like. I'm very much on the fence with this one. Yes, it's impressive that one guy did this, but that won't make me suddenly enjoy things when I get bored. Take away the 'single dev' aspect and this is a middling space horror-ish game that is frequently dull and often frustrating. It's not so much about what Antares is, but what he'll do next - I look forward to seeing future games that will be better than this. Pick it up for five quid to support and encourage the dev, but otherwise it's just not that good a game.
Antares is an enjoyable first-person shooting game in a science fiction setting. You are exploring a malfunctioning space station orbiting a resourced-filled planet. The space station seemed to be infested with walking dead skeletons and creatures from hell. The enemy hordes gets more aggressive when power randomly shuts down. There are multiple objectives you have to complete to get the station back in function at the same time you get xp by killing enemies that you can use yo upgrade your protagonist. There are voice logs lying around the station explaining the story and are narrated by professional voice actors. There are positives and negatives to the game but overall i really enjoyed playing this one. 7/10. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iaxlSc_BZ7k&t=7s Pros: Story is basic, gun is basic and sound/music is well positioned. Nice intro cutscene. Excellent map making. Professional Voice log narration. Cons: The big elephant in the room is the simple AI behaviour (runs at you, meeles you like an idiot). A bit laggy at the beginning when you turn around (lacks smoothness)
Not the most advanced AI but a very interesting scene and a really cool development style in regards to the way things look . The graphics are great, the weapon looks, the map design was really awesome. A good fast paced shooter, but a little too repetitive.
I am still amazed that one guy develop this whole game. The game though can add more guide for the objective part but other than that the game looks great. Do check out my gameplay and review👇👇👇 https://youtu.be/wjFXhj_7K8A
wow. This is something. I'll just list some basic feedback. -Motion blur when you move the mouse makes people feel like they might vomit. Turn that off -having 30 enemies shambling towards you with all running the same skin and same animation as they were spawned in at the same time looks terrible. -the animations don't match the enemy movements and they glide along the floor. -i can actually see the enemies spawn in, in large groups popping out of a central spot. -the doors look invisible half the time -there is no path finding on stairs so if you want to be invincible, stand on the stairs. Guess it worked for the Daleks. -very limited sounds and get's old after about 30 seconds of combat -instead of zoom, right mouse is dash? -combat has zero impact. there is no thrill -if you take even a small amount of damage, get ready for a glitch effect permanently on your screen. The list goes on really. I was given this game to review but it's not enough of a game to really review properly. With another few years work and a team it might be fleshed out into something worthwhile but even the menu's uninspired. It reminds me of a bad asset flip unity demo.
As a solo developer, I wish I could make a game half as good as Antares. It has it's pro's and con's, but overall, its a lot of fun.
First of ... I really wish steam had a rating system, not just recommend yes / no. I can't say yes or no. I'd give it like 3 stars out of 5 if I could. That said, I should probably start with the FIRST LOOK video, as video speaks more than 1000 words, so check it out here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ruXkl_ACSY As I understand game is made by a small dev team, so can't expect much. For a small project, game looks good, but compared to games like Doom, which it seem to be based on, you can't really compare. This game has so many missing or bad effects (sound and visuals). Worst thing, is the LIGHTING! You can't see a freaking darn thing, it's so dark .. even tho in many places you see lights all over, they just don't light up the areas at all. Flashlight you are given .. is also nearly non existing. This DARK DARK stuff is not fun and not scary, it's just annoying. Some dark areas are ok, like you walk into some dark basement or cargo area that has broken lights, that's ok and can be quite immersive and scary, but constantly in some dark a-hole .. just NO. Game needs a lot of work, but story looks quite promising. At this stage, I can't really recommend this game, I don't want to say yes or no, but steam forces me to select one, so I have to go with no, because I really can't imagine playing through this game at this stage, it's just too early access, too much is missing. I wanted to make it clear. Light needs fixing, surround sound needs fixing (I constantly hear enemies behind me, but enemy is in front or front side instead) and some other sound and visuals need fixing, then it will be worth playing through.
A solid little indie game made by a solo dev!
