What could be scarier than a massive dungeon-tower infested with skulls, ogres, and dragons? That those same monsters ride the largest multinational in the world with it. You know; business is business.

This isn't a rogue-lite (meta-progression, death resets you to a given point), much less a rogue-like (no power meta-progression) as claimed on the store page. My character died, I got booted to town, I went back in and enemies remained dead and my level progression stayed. Also hit a bug like.. almost at once where even if I destroyed items, I couldn't pick up new ones. I get this is early access, but this is all very strange. Edit What is up with the reviews for this game? There was a burst of them at first, me having the only negative and since then there's basically no reviews.
🌍➡ https://errekgamer.com/2023/01/02/primeras-impresiones-hack-and-slime/
GAME CANCELLED, PLUS ITEM MISSING TO FINISH STORY. Devs never incorporated one item needed to progress the story. I inquired and the dev's ASSURED me it would be implemented when they changed engines then deleted my post in the discussions section. 1 year later and the project is scrapped. I REALLY enjoyed Hack and Slime and genuinekly am gutted I cannot finish it. All the best to the devs.
My early impressions of this game are that it doesn't quite nail anything it attempts. The humor is completely hit or miss, and imo I think this is an attempt to add charm / likability to a game that doesn't take itself seriously. Unfortunately, it misses quite often. The combat is essentially "spam attack". If you have shield, I think it would be nice to be able to actually use it. Furthermore, enemies are more annoying than challenging. You get hit from completely unexpected places often enough for you to realize it's 100% intentional from the developer's part. Monsters are regularly set up in ways to "cheap shot" you, as in you literally have no time to react to most monster actions and since monsters coordinate with each other, it cheapens the combat. You can't evade , roll or block at the outset, often leaving you to take these on the chin. Leveling doesn't feel all that impactful. My biggest gripe about this game is it's core mechanics. I feel that the pixel graphics and attempts at humor don't do enough to detract from these issues. It's been a while since I have negatively reviewed a game, but I think this will be it for me. I couldn't really play long enough to explore some of the skills and perks. Spamming and being set up/ put in unavoidable situations really detracted from the game play for me.
This game is in early access and as a result, I'm very forgiving on certain things I would normally absolutely crucify a game for, so keep that in mind because I did end up enjoying this game, but it is absolutely riddled with issues. There is no combo system. None. You can literally mash the attack button and enemies will stand there stupidly as they get absolutely demolished because the enemy AI is also trash. If enemies at least bounced away when hit, had some sort of invisibility, something, it would be far more challenging, but as it stands the game is ridiculously easy. It would also be a good idea to have more checkpoints or shorter levels. The levels themselves are not difficult, but it IS difficult to stay engaged because the level design is very lacking. Enemies don't exactly respawn the way they should for a roguelike or roguelite either. The dev team would probably be better off studying Rogue Legacy's design structure because even though this is not Rogue Legacy, it feels familiar enough that they could learn from it and really bolster their current game. There are also basic quality of life improvements that the game could have as well, such as shortcuts that are unlocked as you move through the dungeon and there are areas that you can literally get stuck in, forcing you to teleport to the village and lose a ridiculous amount of progress, which is even more painful because you do NOT move fast enough across the map, especially in an area you've already cleared out. My final 2 complaints are things I kinda anticipate seeing in early access, so I wouldn't take them too hard. The translation is not good. The dev team needs some better localization, which is an easy fix that the community can help with. Also, it's entirely possible to lock up and bug the game in a way that forces you to have to go to the title screen (I tried to attack upward while dashing and got completely locked in place), but that can be ironed out with more playtesting and feedback. Now for what I did like. The overall presentation, characters, scenario, artwork, animation, music, etc. is very nice. I do think some things need to be fleshed out more, like more comprehensive skill trees, more enemies and enemy variety, etc., but overall this is an interesting title that can only get better. I look forward to seeing what the dev team can put together and seeing this through early access!
Do not buy. Another Early Access game that has been abandoned/Canceled.
