Lumen

Hey bucko…. you like data centers? Mmm hmm. me too. they’re so super duper wickedly awesome sauce. Just think about how much cool stuff we can do because of them. Without ‘em, we wouldn’t have things like my conservative boss’s constant Charlie Kirk posts, every episode of Love Love Fruit Island, or the entirety of Trump’s Twitter channel. And if that wasn’t swell enough, the big tech CEOs are saying that data centers will give us millions of jobs, clean up the environment, and ultimately save the world!!!….nevermind the fact that the building is basically an empty warehouse that needs close to no employees once finished and they use so much electricity that we’re going to have to build TEN TIMES MORE POWER PLANTS, but forget about all that!
that’s just propaganda made by jealous right leaning grifter dudes!!
Now, I know what you’re thinking: the only way a data center can get any cooler is if it were h a u n t e d . And buddy, do I have just the absolute perfect game for you. The real question I should’ve asked is do you like Exit 8? Because just like countless other anomaly games on Steam, Anomaly Jobs follows the playbook to the letter. It’s the classic “you work at this location, but things are all weird and loopy! If nothing’s wrong, go through this door; but if something is wrong, go through that door. got it? ”. If the leftovers are still good, reheat them in the microwave! One of the most intriguing things about Anomaly Jobs is that unlike its inspirations, it doesn’t really seem all that horror coded. Sure, there are a number of “scary” differences, like
all your co-workers turning into zombies or finding a skeleton underneath the floor
but most of the anomalies are just… random things appearing where they shouldn’t be. Like, one of the computers was
replaced with a doll house; or grass is growing on the ceiling; or the Thinker statue is just in the middle of a hallway.
Do you think
the Thinker statue
is scary? I don’t. Now it’s really all up to player preference if you want the difference spotting to be more aha! than AAAA!! , but I personally found the game to be a bit more interesting this way. But you know what’s not very interesting? Taking out the trash. See, you kind of get a bonus with Anomaly Jobs, as it’s kinda two games in one! First game is spot duh difference and all that nonsense, but the second game? JANITOR SIMULATOR. While wandering the data center, you’re tasked with mopping the floors and throwing away any garbage you find each time you loop, and while video games do a pretty good job at making almost any activity seem fun, I have yet to see the hidden thrills of mopping the floor.
I already do that IRL, man. I don’t want to do it playing games, too.
SO... do you like Exit 8? If you’re playing Anomaly Jobs, you’d better; because it’s what you get. Let’s talk about the production values of this free Steam game. It’s made in Unreal Engine. …..need I say anymore?? In all seriousness, Anomaly Jobs doesn’t look half bad. I wouldn’t at all be surprised if half the assets were pre-made or whatever, but there’s still enough talent on screen to show that someone cared about this. The data center -game’s sole location- looks pretty slick; with all the machines whirring and such, the safety posters and schedules lining the walls, and various employees doing their jobs. One of these employee guys, I’ll just call him Marty, is just hanging out in a closet playing what appears to be a Roblox game on his laptop, and there are two anomalies related to this dude; one of them is just
him literally just doing his job as he’s supposed to (something so uncommon, apparently, that the entire multiverse resets upon doing so),
and one of him
as a dead skeleton on the floor, game still running.
I don’t know about you, but that’s just peak comedy. The lighting looks surprisingly nice, particularly all the flashing computer lights whenever the building’s lights are out. The sound effects mostly consist of beeps, boops, and whirs; and they’re convincing enough. (the game has almost no music, aside from a fifteen second menu loop). And I’ll admit that a data center is definitely one of the more interesting locations for a game like this to take place; it’s different, not too big, but still has a lot of places to hide things; and overall, the game does a good job with that, making the most of the place. So what’s the problem? Well, the main problem is that the game runs like hot garbage. Everything feels like it’s about to come crashing down at any moment; the frame rate is so low and choppy
(not even close to reaching the promised 60 frames)
that your character feels like they’re moving drunk on a backwards conveyor belt while wearing roller skates. The drawback distance can be so utterly broken at times that you could be staring at a sea of blank space before the entire building decides to render on you
(and no, that was NOT an anomaly).
Theoretically, these issues could just be fixed by tweaking the settings to your liking, but that theory is bogus. The game doesn’t appear to look as intended on max graphic settings, and the game still runs terribly on the lowest graphic settings; so it really is a big bummer for both worlds. Overall, Anomaly Jobs looks pretty good at a standstill, but the moment you move around, things get real dizzy real fast. About what I expected from a one-dev Unreal game. As far as those Exit 8 style games go, Anomaly Jobs: Data Center is definitely not the worst one I’ve played; but it’s also not all that particularly great. There are a few clever moments, but it’s pretty generic in both graphics and gameplay; and for a genre that’s known for blending horror and puzzles so well, the only real scary thing about this game is the fact that you’re working at a data center. Sure, it’s a free game, which is always nice, but here’s my advice: quit your job. go play Balatro instead
not a bad game, its fun, kind of like an SCP data center, not scary whatssoever, no jump scares but not bad at all for a free game
very good game loved it alot :)
