Among the Sleep is a riveting and deeply moving indie horror gem that masterfully captures the wonder, confusion, and fear of early childhood. Playing as a two-year-old toddler, you explore a beautifully haunting dream-like world where everyday objects tower over you and shadows hide unknown threats, all while clutching your teddy bear for comfort. The exceptional sound design, immersive atmosphere, and intuitive exploration create a tense yet tender experience that feels profoundly personal. It stands out as a brilliant metaphor for how children navigate and try to make sense of a vast, unpredictable world, evoking genuine empathy and nostalgia. Short but unforgettable, this game is a must-play for anyone who appreciates atmospheric storytelling and emotional depth. Highly recommended — 9/10.
Almost great I want to underline that there is a lot to love here and I'm very glad I played this all the way through. Hopefully this does not come across as if I did not. The core concept is quite clever. A lot of horror has us focus on a protagonist who has Little power and much vulnerability and a literal two year old as a player character is probably the one that is the truest of without actually getting into someone that just wouldn't be any fun to play as at all. It's over a decade since I first played and loved the first two Penumbra and the first 2 AMNESIA Games. I quite like that this functions as a smaller simpler version of those and it doesn't feel like a rip off rather than an homage. However there are just some decisions that each on their own are fine but come together to make this less than it could be. Stealth was probably where I was the most engaged as far as gameplay goes and there's just not that much of it. It requires you to hide under things which means you can't use the teddy bear light source despite this being so dark that I ended up giving in and adjusting the gamma way past what it suggested. Climbing can feel awkward when it sort of stands in for jumping since you're sort of climbing in the air. I quite like that you crawl faster then you run though there were times where I was trying to hide and somehow the thing was too low for me to crawl under and other times where I felt confident I wasn't supposed to crawl under something because it looked so low but I still could. The ending really didn't work for me and I was not even remotely surprised when I found out that it was not the original though thankfully that one can be accessed in the museum which is a sort of interactive behind the scenes thing. The fact that this is short and that the puzzles are incredibly simple Is not in and of itself bad I just wish that it had developed its ideas more over the course of those. It's also not really a problem that this is primarily a walking simulator that the physics simulation is at least slightly clunky and there is very little experimentation you can do . Except for how similar this is to aforementioned franchises how much better they do these things . Mildly recommended
To start with, the game seems simple, and honestly, it is. It's short and doesn't have as much complexity as other horror games, mainly because it's not just a horror game—it's also an exploration game. It's very easy to praise this game; finding something bad to say about it is much harder. The environments are fascinating, with an atmosphere that truly immerses you in both the experience and the imagination of the baby. Every chapter does an amazing job of creating that feeling. We also can't forget the soundtrack in each room, or everything you can see, read, and appreciate in the Museum. The gameplay and mechanics are so well designed that they make you realize how many games nowadays seem to be made only for money. This one was clearly made with love. As for the story, it's a solid 10/10 for me. It doesn't necessarily make everyone cry—that depends on how emotional you are—but every line of dialogue, every drawing, and every reference contributes to the narrative. The free DLC also answers many of the questions left by the main game. The story is simply magnificent. The way it tells everything through fairy tales, symbolism, and the perspective of a baby is what makes me love this masterpiece. Even the smallest lines in each chapter carry meaning. One of my favorite examples is one of the mother's final memories, when she says, "The bunny's tears filled the well." The way the baby remembers that moment, the way he hears it, and the way the game presents it to the player is incredible. The bunny represents the baby's mother, while the well symbolizes her addiction born from sadness. The idea of "filling the well" is such a simple line on the surface, yet it carries so much emotional weight throughout the story. If the developers ever released another DLC, a mod, or even a sequel—not necessarily one focused on the father, but something that explored the original ending shown in the Museum—it would be amazing. I'd love to know why we ended up there, why Teddy becomes evil, whether he represents the father, why the mother wasn't supposed to be found in the original version of the game, how we became lost in the world of imagination during the transition from the house to the steampunk area, and what the earliest version of the game was like. Just by playing, you can see how many details support and reinforce the community's theories. A sequel or DLC—even if it were paid—would be an instant purchase for me if it explored those ideas in greater depth. I'd also love to see the animations and behaviors of the monsters and animals that were removed during development, as well as possible upgrades or new abilities for Teddy. He's already an incredibly useful companion with unique mechanics, not to mention his little weapon! Finally, I want to congratulate everyone who worked on this masterpiece. I watched the entire credits because I know a lot of talented people put their hearts into this game. Thank you for creating such an unforgettable experience. And if you're reading this review: buy the game. Trust me—you won't regret it.
Among the Sleep does a lot of things well, such as pulling off the 'child's nightmare' aesthetic and playing smoothly along with tackling a subject as serious as it does through the eyes of a toddler, but it's also very short, feels rushed at times, and it'll leave you wanting more out of it. A brief (approximately 2-3 hours depending on whether you speed-crawl it or try to collect everything) run 'n' hide physics based style survival horror in the vein of Amnesia, Among the Sleep has you playing as a two year old on their birthday with a talking teddy bear who wakes up from a nap to their mother missing and their house turned into a dark, twisted nightmare. Anything more than that would delve deep into spoilers, being that the majority of the game's plot gets revealed at the very end...which in itself adds to the 'is that it?' feeling you get when you get there. The gameplay is relatively simple and easy by the genres standards; platform, puzzle, and occasionally dodge monsters that you can only flee and hide from. The game does throw in the occasional little twist such as hugging your teddy to provide light (which is cute, if not slightly unnecessary until the final section) and crawling being faster than walking or sprinting along with the toddler in question being surprisingly easy to control. There are a couple of critical missteps though, as while it's hinted at throughout the game very, very lightly the reveal at the end feels almost unearned with how quickly the ending gets rushed through after that point, coming across like they'd made the game up to that point and then lost focus. The difficulty also feels that way at times too, since given that the monsters show up very infrequently and largely it's just creepy noises and atmospheres instead the sense of danger that comes from being a very young kid in an unfamiliar and threatening world evaporates quickly once the player realises that. That said though if you can buy it on sale for a deep discount it's worth the couple of hours sunk into it as the concept is unique and the way it plays out is great at its best, but by and large it only feels like half of a game as compared to a full one even with the included prologue DLC and the behind-the-scenes museum. All in all a mixed recommendation; it's fun for what you get and the bonus content sweetens the deal, but there's still that lingering feeling that it could have been so much more.
