Amazin' George 2 is a fairly standard JRPG but the things it does well are all excellent and the things it fumbles on are minor and easy to overlook. Story: The story follows old school JRPG conventions where there is a simple starting goal (in this case find your master) that takes a while to solve, and then there is a twist that sets up the final portion of the game. The dialogue is told through poetry and it lends a lighthearted feel to the story. This is nice for a change as too many rpgs have high stakes serious storytelling. Gameplay: The gameplay is fairly standard. You move around local maps with visible enemies you have to fight (I think they are limited and don't respawn which is nice), and you move around an overworld map featuring all of these locations where you get RNG fights similar to Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest. The combat system is turn based featuring abilities, items, guarding, attacking, and fleeing. A nice quality of life feature is that fleeing works 100% of the time so you aren't stuck in battles you don't want to fight. Each local map has treats which are the game's currency scattered around so you get to collect them as you clear the area of enemies. This actually helps the level design as it is fairly fun to collect it all (even though most of your currency is still gained from turn based combat). Throughout the course of the game you end up with four party members, but for the majority of the game you will be controlling two characters. This all works and the game feels fun. Graphics and Sound: The graphics remind me of the PS1 era of games and it seems to be heavily inspired by Final Fantasy. For an indie game these are surprisingly well done. The textures have enough detail and the art design has made each area feel distinct. The soundtrack feels very warm and bubbly. As I said in the story section this game feels very lighthearted and the music really lends to this feeling. Nothing feels better than a catchy tune after you win a turn based battle and this game has a pretty decent one. Bugs: As of the time I am posting this review (2/15/2022) there are a few bugs still in the game. One of them is a chest that gives you nothing when you open it and Japanese characters appear in the popup text box. Another is well known where one of the party characters will become more and more offset each round of combat (this doesn't prevent anything and is just visual) which is funny when he gets so far offscreen in a boss fight that he may as well have went to the Moon. There is also some text that seems to reference unused mechanics like the ability to use fireworks under effects in the menu and something about changing a map to dark theme or something of this nature and neither actually exist ingame that I could find. Also it seems that I cannot get the starting the game achievement so perhaps that broke sometime between version updates. With that said there are no game breaking bugs or anything that would ruin your enjoyment of the game. 99% of amazin' George 2 is very well polished in that respect. Value: I was able to get around 3-6 hours or so of playtime for $5.99 at the time of writing as my out of game time is a little bit higher than my playthrough actually was ingame. I would say this is pretty fair value for the price you pay and the experience is enjoyable enough especially if you like JRPGs already. While it is already worth it, a content update adding another hour or so of playtime would be very welcomed. It is good to support indie developers and the creator of this game definitely made this out of passion for the genre. Overall: Amazin' George 2 is a fun lighthearted romp through a classic JRPG style story with all the twist and turns and gameplay that genre entails. Well polished with appealing graphics and music, and 3-6 hours of solid gameplay this is an easy sell to anyone interested and reading this review already. Especially so if this game is on a sale as $5.99 is more than fair. Definitely check this one out!
Amazin’ George 2 is a bad game with good elements. All of the pieces of a good game are here, but the way it is set up created a game that I struggled to get through. Amazin’ George 2’s weakest trait is its gameplay. One of the first problems I noticed was that the balance was really out of whack. So I think the first forest is supposed to have enemies, but mine did not so when I just find the items and then left. After that though when you go to the main map I was vastly outclassed to the point where I died in my first fight. See that is even worse because the game only saves when you tell it to (it should ask you to do it or automatically do it upon rest), so I had to restart the game all over again. That is not a great start, and poor starts put people off from your games. So what I ended up doing was farming, running from the hard fights when they occurred, then constantly running back and forth between the inn and the main map to heal between every fight or two, which was extremely tedious. After this, however, once I had the money to buy the boots and a few levels under my belt fights became extremely easy with very little risk involved. Combat at that point mostly involved me mashing the space bar over and over to just constantly use basic attacks (which turned out to be way stronger than magic on George and Binky) this was tedious albeit very effective. The only time I used magic was to heal and then when I got my under-leveled and under-geared characters. Speaking of under-leveled characters, when you pick up your master (a title that feels very wrong to me) they start at level 5, and my other characters were 14. The same thing happened with Astrid, though the last character you pick up starts at 10 which is a bit better. What is also odd about these characters is that they show up so late in the game with the last one being in my party for maybe 5 minutes before the game ended. As for NPCs they get in the way all the time and are cardboard cutouts as far as their personalities are concerned. Then there is the map itself. It is fairly small which is fine for an indie game like this, but navigation is terrible and there are very few rest spots so you have to make some long trips frequently. In many of the dungeons the camera angles are awful, and with the identical textures, it is really hard to see elevation changes. This could easily be remedied using strong shadows or changing the textures around the edges of cliffs to make them more distinct. There is too much clutter and that can make it hard to see and there are two items that are impossible to get because of the clutter. The poison pools are just terrible to deal with if you can graze them you can get poisoned which sucks. It doesn’t help that your map is only useful about 40-50% of the time, beyond that it is either gone or unreadable. I also had a couple of odd situations where enemies spawned in the wrong zone. As for enemies, they lack quite a bit of variety, you never know how much health they have, and the bosses are not hard but they have massive health pools which made those fights bad. The salamanders are the most perplexing of the enemies though. They are in the icy zone? They are not even white or anything just some green salamanders shooting ice at you… okay… They also got stuck at weird points in their animations and would stay in that state until hit. And, most annoying of all, apparently they do not give XP, so I just ran from every one of those fights. Speaking of XP I would have liked a meter to see where I was at you tell me how much I get, just tell me how much I have. Also, most fights do not give treats which is pretty BS especially when some items can be fairly expensive. On items there is an item slot that is NEVER used in the game, so why is it there? Item variety is extremely low. Curealls (the only useful consumable) only cure poison because that is the only status effect, so just call it an antidote so that you are not lying to me. The feathers do nothing and you get like 25 of them given to you. The menu has two options that are essentially the same (status and gear). And as a last note, I had two occasions where the text was in the wrong language. Yeah… this game has a lot wrong with it which is especially strange because they have updated it enough to call it the 2 ½ version. Also, you got rid of achievements, which annoys me as an achievement hunter. As far as the story goes I found it is not great. I read everything and the beginning is a bit confusing because it references the previous game. Most of the dialogue is rhymes which is odd. And there is too little interaction between characters to see any sort of bond. It was fluff to me, so I could take it or leave it. It doesn’t get in the way, but if you want it, it is there. I liked the audio of this game. I thought the music was really solid and the sound design has a strong throwback feel to it, so I thought it was all pretty good. It was not quite in that golden spot I have where I seek out the music or even pay for the soundtrack. However one of the boss fight songs really stuck out to me, which is always impressive. As far as the game goes I think that this is the best part. But as a side note, please make it so that your launcher doesn’t blast my ears, my volume is generally low to protect my ears and the launcher was 2x louder than every other sound on my computer. Graphically speaking the game is fine. The low polygon, repetitive texture, and simple animation style are a call back to a lot of games during the N64 era. However, there are a few key issues. One of them is that the detail given to different objects varies greatly, some things barely have more than 3 colors with large pixels and others are far more detailed and blended with many colors. It just creates a bit of a conflicting art style, it is not a big enough style gap to make it extremely obvious though. It was worst in the short desert area, but it happened everywhere. Also just an odd note, certain areas do not have fight backgrounds that match their exploration zones. I was exploring the desert while having my fights in a forest and also had some fights in what kind of looked like a factory when exploring a stone temple. Also, I saw from other people’s pictures that the style was changed… why? It was fine before and your game needs WAY more love in its gameplay. But yeah, overall I think the art is fine, but not impressive. I am grateful to the developers for offering me a review copy of the game. Sorry it took so long, but I did get to review the Digital Deluxe version, so the review is very current. However, the game is bad. That being said I think that the devs should be proud. The credits included just 3 names, I would say given their team size this game is impressive. The price for this game is in a great spot too which is something I see a lot of indie devs screw up. 6 dollars for 5 hours of gameplay is pretty fair. It is even better when it goes on sale, it has gone as low as 59 cents. Honestly, that alone makes me think the game is worth buying. Even if you do not like the game supporting a small team for less than a dollar is well worth it in my opinion. However, I still believe that this game deserves a negative review.
For other game reviews, please follow us at What The Game?
amazin' George 2 is a simple JRPG style exploration game with a basic turn-based combat mode. The theme centers around George the magic wielding cat on quest to find his 'master'. The graphical style is a mix of '90s era textures and models, but a few are quite detailed compared to George himself (e.g., giant wasps). There are many connected maze-like zones that George puzzles through. The sound is very basic and includes an arcade style background music loop, which changes with each zone. The first task a player will have to undertake is figuring out how to move and interact in the world, as no instructions are provided in the game and there isn't a way to display the controls or remap the controls. There is a manual available on the Steam store page for the game that gives a rundown of the controls. Random pecking of the keys will also ferret out the basic controls; WASD/arrow keys, enter/space bar, QE for rotate, VC for camera zoom, etc. The mouse cursor and mouse tracking could have been used for camera positioning, movement, and world interaction, but the mouse is only used for menu selections. There is no HUD in the exploration mode and it really could use one, especially a mini-map of some kind as it is easy to get disoriented because camera rotation is necessary in some zones. As far as gameplay, it's like a Pacman-Bards Tale hybrid. Run George around picking up cat treats (used for currency), open chests containing a variety of possible items, and avoid (or fight) roaming monsters (ghosts, skeletons, giant wasps, cat eating plants, etc.) If George runs into a monster in the Pacman mode, he enters the combat mode. The combat mode is a very basic turn-based system with options for attack, guard, use a consumable item, skills, or escape. The mechanics of using the combat options are unnecessarily tedious; click to select skills, click skills again to open the list, click the slash skill, click the target of the skill to attack it, rinse, repeat. A combat victory is rewarded with some cat treats, and there are vendors that sell wearable and consumable items, that add defense, attack damage, healing, etc. If George is low on MP or HP or both, George can sleep on a bed to get back up to full. George will face tougher and tougher monsters; eventually groups of them. Some of them are quite lethal, so save often, the game doesn't do it automatically. George can find companions to help and they are required for the tougher fights. amazin' George 2 has the makings of a reasonably complete JRPG style exploration game, but is marred by a somewhat clunky interface, that becomes fatiguing due to the repetitive use of clicking menu options. There is no exploration HUD and no tooltips or object identifiers for what can be interacted with. Some configuration options are not obvious, for example "BGM" and "Cursor Position". There also isn't a graceful way to exit the game to the desktop, Alt-F4 works. That said, the game does not crash and will run on a potato with a keyboard plugged into it. It has an almost old school arcade feel to it due to the graphical style and sound, but with a few modern ideas implemented. Marginally recommended at a couple of dollars for those that can live with a clunky interface and love the theme, otherwise wait for a big sale or steer clear of this one.
An incredible game with an incredible story This easily takes the top spot out of any games I have ever played, I highly recommend this to everyone However, like the description says the topic can be a bit much, and the game heavily impacted me after completing it It was still a lot of fun to play though, and I definitely had a blast 11/10
