I feel this game is good for what it is right up until it isn't. I died numerous times along the way, which is fine, but then at the end of the game the difficulty shifts from challenging to nearly impossible for absolutely no explicable reason whatsoever. You'll get through most of the game with some challenge, at least I did, and then the last zone--the final boss fight, in particular--is just literally WTF. I was level 36 when I made it to the final boss and my character was just melting on contact, so I periodically (as it's slow, and not super fun) grinded my way to level 40 (the game required no grind up until this point, mind you) so that I could give the final boss another go. The result of adding 4 more levels and equipping the best gear I could find/buy/craft: the second my cool-down timers expired, so did I. Finally, in a begrudging moment of I don't really care any more, as I'd put as much into this game as I was prepared to, I dropped the difficulty to easy (git gud, whatever) so that I could at least get some closure to this story's mediocre narrative (it's not a AAA title, so no judgment there, as I wasn't expecting much to begin with), and then during the 3rd form of the final fight my game crashed... the result of which is my finally dropping a review. All of that aside, the game is cool if you're interested in some knockoff Diablo action, which is what first drew me to it, but the completely unnecessary shift in difficulty at the very end prevents me from recommending it to anyone... Though some people seem to like being angry while playing video games, so that demographic might enjoy it.
Aluna is quite a nice hack and slash Indie game that is probably best suited for somewhat younger audiences (of say 12 - 18 years if I had to guess). It is one of the few games with a South American setting, so in that sense it is quite unique. The storyline is okay.....it is not absolutely amazing (for older audiences at least, but who knows....for younger audiences the story is potentially of much higher caliber). It might lend itself better to those who prefer mostly the hack and slash component and not the long walls of text and / or extended dialogue that some other games have. The art is fairly nicely done. At the highest difficulty setting, it can be quite challenging and it might in such instances be necessary to switch specs between the various skill trees depending upon available skill points and the available gear which is a good thing as creates more variety. What I liked was that the legendary items that can sometimes be found and / or bought often have unique abilities which in turn make new builds viable. Just keep in mind that there is no complexity in skill tree and stat points here that remotely rivals Path of Exile (which can be a good or bad thing depending on what you are looking for). The game has a few small bugs, but nothing truly game breaking. The game has some replay value by allowing it to be replayed on a higher difficulty level once beaten with higher level opponents, although the degree of game depth might not make replays all that interesting for most. The gameplay length is probably around 8 - 20 hours depending on difficulty level and thoroughness for one play through which is perfect for this type of game (as longer is not always better). With the right expectations of what Aluna is, it is a fairly satisfying game.
First Impressions: Another Diablo-esque game... same things... may be fun... After Playing: I was partially wrong. Yes, it is a Diablo-esque ARPG... BUT! That's about where the similarities end. The cutscenes have a really nice feel to them, different mainly because of the comic book art style. That alone deserves a lot of Kudos. The art and blend of mythology are awesome. I appreciate the lore especially as a fan of mythology, so let's get to the pros and cons though... PROS: Starting from the top- the Comic art. Fantastically done and beautiful. The lore, is also pretty intriguing as well. As a diablo-style game it doesn't have the inventory constraints of Diablo. Not playing inventory Tetris is always a good thing for me. The skill trees seem really well balanced as well. Magic, ranged, and melee all have their fair share of attacks from single and AoE uses. It is a single player game but does offer a lot of help with enemies attacking each other and the companions you get along the way. Another point I appreciated greatly was the fact the game is very generous with healing. Heals are practically unlimited with only a short cooldown timer. So overall, fairly solid and friendly for new players. CONS: For as much love as I have for this game, nothing is perfect. Largest issue for me was the AI companions. Many times during one stream, a companion would attack and aggro a group of enemies, which usually was no big deal, until they would stop attacking and not help at all. That got to be a bit annoying. Another thing I noticed is that at times enemies as well, would also not move from a spot as I attacked. So I feel on both aspects, there's a little work to be done. Aiming is a bit off as well, at least with controller use. Though the lore is fun, it is a bit off-putting and odd. Overall: For the price point, it is a worthwhile game to check out. I may push forward more to see more, but its not something at the top of my to-do list. When I play it more if it is deemed necessary, I will alter my review to reflect what I play. I will recommend it though because it is still overall a fun game to play.
Been playing for awhile and its a cool story which has a very different take for ARPGs. The battles can be clunky and I dont mind a challenge but when an enemy on NORMAL can kill you in literally one hit thats bad programming and your potion cool down is bad you cant get more you only have the one and the mobs all band together to kill you you cant fight single groups at once. The moment you get near one the other ones all come into play. Also the enemy power is based on your level so there is LITERALLY no point in getting more powerful.
I could have gotten past the cringey cutscenes, cringey voice acting, and cringey art if the game was actually fun to play. I mean, most Diablo-like action RPGs don't have an amazing story. But the game looks pretty bad even on a high end rig. It's really choppy. There's little enemy variety. There's a forced female protagonist. You don't regenerate energy by default. The nail in the coffin, though, was when I leveled up and got a spell. When you cast it, you're literally stuck in place with a delay. It feels absolutely horrible and inexcusable. There's no way I'm suffering though terrible gameplay on top of cringey cringe. Do yourself a favor and skip this. Editing to add an observation: most of the positive reviews have a low playtime, which is not a good sign. If these people really enjoyed it, they would have played more than an hour or two.
I played a few hours of it and I like how the game looks, and I have always liked rpgs. The fact that it is about a Latin American Super Hero - demigod story is pretty cool and unique. The voice acting is so so, not great but it is enjoyable. Graphics are not bad, music is fitting. I however don't think it is balanced at all, the combat in the game is clunky and pretty annoying. The delay on spells is really bad. I switched to story mode to not deal with it but they all take an enormous time to die and makes it super tedious to skip through enemies just to check out the story, which was my first interest for the game but so far everything seems to bland. Npc allies are terrible companions, they get stuck a lot XD. Had fun how I could but I don't think it caught my interest enough to continue it.
Aluna: Sentinel of the Shards is a hack’n’slash set in a huge world, fight enemy and develop you’re character with new powerful equipment. Graphics (8 / 10) : The graphics are really good, really nice atmosphere, high amount of details in the map, nothing to say here but require a good configuration. Gameplay (9 / 10) : Almost perfect here, the battle gameplay is well done, both classic attack than special skills. You get loot by killing enemy for upgrade you’re character, there also a system of loot rarity (common, uncommon, rare ...) Character gain extra health through level-up, and you can also equip more powerful loot, classic system but really well made Price (7 / 10) : The game cost 16.79 euros, the base content is here and is well done, the game take around 10-15 hours for completing it. Story/Music/Optimisation (6/10) : There a base story, with comic book cinematique, pretty interesting, quite enough for a hack’n’slash. The sound and music are ok, but the music is a little too repetitive. A good PC is required, the game have weak optimisation, played at around 30 fps with a good number of freeze (played on a i5, 2Go VRAM and 8Go RAM), you may need to reduce you’re resolution. That the highest bad point for this game. Final Note (7.5 / 10) : Aluna: Sentinel of the Shards is a great hack’n’slash with great graphics, good atmosphere and really great loot system, but require a good PC because of weak optimisation. Pretty good game if you like hack’n’slash. + : - Good graphics - Differents atmospheres - Loot system / Loot rarety - Skills and Characters evolution - : - Weak optimisation / Good PC required - Maybe too short for some peoples.
It's an action RPG in the style of Diablo or Torchlight, but you play as a set-in-stone character, Aluna. There are some small bugs (your character's pathfinding) or unclear things here and there (such as needing to right-click skills to unlock them, when left-clicking didn't work I figured I might need to go to a place to unlock skills?), but overall the storyline, the music, and gameplay are excellent! It is set in Latin America at some point post-conquista, and your character is a demigoddess whose father is a conquistador and mother is the goddess of the earth, so there are some really interesting implications going on here. The comic book style of the cinematics are effective as well. Looking forward to completing it!
