This is really a hidden gem of a game. Tight controls, fun game play, incredible attention put into the animation. Fun game and hope it gets more visibility.
Game that still needs to be fixed! it is not stable
Stylish 2D hack and slash a fun game
Why isn't this a bestseller? This is a masterpiece.
Alter Army, developed and published by Vague Pixels, is an action platformer that leans heavily into speed, aggression, and constant engagement. From the moment it begins, the game establishes a relentless pace, placing players in a harsh, collapsing world where survival depends on mastering combat and movement rather than carefully planning each step. It’s not a game interested in easing players in; instead, it expects immediate adaptation, rewarding those who embrace its intensity and punishing hesitation. The core structure revolves around a loop of exploration and combat encounters, with progression often tied to triggering arena-style battles. As players move through different areas, they are frequently locked into combat scenarios where waves of enemies must be defeated before moving forward. This design creates a steady rhythm—brief moments of traversal followed by bursts of high-pressure action—that defines the entire experience. It keeps the pacing consistently fast, ensuring that the player is rarely idle and always preparing for the next confrontation. Combat is the centerpiece, and it’s where Alter Army feels most alive. Movement mechanics such as dashing and jumping are tightly integrated into combat, encouraging players to stay mobile and aggressive at all times. Attacks feel impactful, and chaining actions together creates a satisfying sense of flow once the systems are understood. The game rewards offensive play, often pushing players to stay on the attack rather than retreating, which adds to the adrenaline-driven feel of each encounter. Boss fights, in particular, stand out as key moments, combining distinct attack patterns with increased difficulty that demands both precision and adaptability. The game introduces multiple environments, each with its own visual identity and set of enemies. These areas provide some variation, helping to keep the experience visually engaging as players progress. However, while the settings change, the underlying gameplay loop remains largely consistent. The lack of significant mechanical evolution means that, over time, the experience can begin to feel repetitive, especially for players expecting new systems or deeper layers to emerge as they advance. Visually, Alter Army adopts a bold pixel art style that emphasizes clarity and motion. The bright effects and exaggerated animations work well in fast-paced combat, making it easier to track enemies and attacks even when the screen becomes crowded. The aesthetic complements the game’s high-energy design, while the soundtrack reinforces its intensity with a driving, upbeat tone. Although effective, both the visuals and audio can start to feel repetitive during longer sessions, reflecting the game’s relatively limited scope. Despite its strengths, the game does struggle with consistency in certain areas. Platforming sections can feel less refined than combat, with movement that occasionally lacks the precision needed for tight navigation. This contrast becomes noticeable, as the game clearly excels when focused on combat but feels less polished when shifting to traversal. Minor technical issues and rough edges further highlight its indie origins, occasionally interrupting the otherwise smooth flow of gameplay. The narrative is present but minimal, serving more as background context than a central focus. The world hints at a larger story through its environments and general tone, but it rarely develops into something more substantial. This approach keeps attention on gameplay, but it also limits the overall sense of immersion for players who value storytelling as part of the experience. In the end, Alter Army is a game defined by its energy and straightforward design philosophy. It delivers fast, engaging combat and a clear gameplay loop that can be highly satisfying in short bursts. At the same time, its lack of depth, limited variety, and uneven polish prevent it from reaching its full potential. It stands as an impressive effort with a strong core, particularly for an indie project, but one that doesn’t quite evolve enough to leave a lasting impact. Rating: 7/10
