The sequel to the critically acclaimed Alone in the Dark, this new adventure sees our hero, Edward Carnby, in 1923 confronting the many faces of evil in the darkness of Derceto, a house in which entering is the easy part and leaving could be hell!

First playthrough review time. Alone in the Dark 2 is a sequel to the 1992 game and keeps some of the same ideas but also changes a few things. It still has fixed camera angles, pre-rendered backgrounds, and polygon characters. You still move around, search for items, and solve puzzles, but the focus is more on action compared to the first game. Gameplay is mostly about going through different areas, finding what you need, and solving puzzles to move forward. Combat shows up more often this time, and aiming feels more direct without any help systems. The pacing keeps changing between slower exploration parts and more combat-heavy sections, which makes it feel a bit uneven. Overall, Alone in the Dark 2 adds more action while keeping the same basic structure. It doesn’t always feel smooth in how it mixes things, but it shows the series experimenting with new ideas. The controls and visuals feel old now, but the core gameplay is still the same.
The sequel formula is almost inevitable; sequels (at least initially) will almost always be bigger, have higher budgets, and grander scopes. Sometimes this works out in the sequels' favor, such as in the works of James Cameron, and sometimes it doesn't. A sequel is rarely the complete antithesis of the original work, though. Alone in the Dark was not a perfect piece of art, but it managed to build dread and atmosphere through innovative gameplay mechanics, a strong atmosphere, and a shockingly well-written plot despite its lack of refinement and real scares. Franck De Girolami's Alone in the Dark 2, developed again by Infogrames, is an extremely perplexing title for this reason. Tonally, it's more in line with the goofier Tomb Raider games than what markets itself as a serious horror game. Edward Carnby runs around a gangster moonshine mansion, bludgeoning zombie pirates to death with a frying pan while dressed as Santa Claus. In all honesty, this could still work as a horror game. The main issue here is that Alone in the Dark 2 entirely lacks atmosphere. It's not for a lack of effort - Jean-Luc Escalant's musical score is compositionally interesting and memorable, and the game's 2D environmental art is far more detailed and visually dense than what the first game could hope to provide. The issue is again in implementation and tone - much of Escalant's score consists of upbeat and energetic tracks such as "Getting Into Action", which sounds right out of a James Bond film. Even tracks such as "Don't Despair" and "Loneliness", which I consider compositionally beautiful, do absolutely nothing to instill an atmosphere of dread or fear. It doesn't help that these tracks are programmed as simple looping background music, without much effort put into using the score to underscore specific rooms or sequences. I would say "Resident Evil it is not", but frankly, it hardly even feels akin to Alone in the Dark. I don't expect every horror game to scare me, but I at least expect an immersive atmosphere, which the original game provided in spades and the sequel decidedly does not, which makes the frequently silly aspects of the narrative and tone stick out even more. Perhaps the total lack of atmosphere could be forgiven or at least helped by a game that featured improvements to the original's gameplay faults or an equally compelling story. Unfortunately, it is lower in both of these categories. Whoever at Infogrames decided that the sequel to Alone in the Dark should be a run-and-gun action game should be dropkicked, because Alone in the Dark 2 has one of the least fun combat systems I have ever played in a game. Enemies can stunlock you with incredible speed if you don't predict the exact corners they'll be standing behind. Your own aim is unreliable, which means that the game asking for your quick reaction times in a gameplay engine built around the puzzle solving and optional combat of the original is ridiculous. It is a comical misinterpretation of the original's goals as a video game. It isn't helped that the puzzles in this action game are somehow more obtuse than in the survival horror game, requiring a lot of actual guesswork that I have absolutely no clue how one is supposed to conclude naturally. The narrative itself I simply find a lot less interesting, too. The original game chronicled a man's descent into insanity, concluding with his suicide, which serves as the hook for the main characters to discover the disturbing secrets of Derceto and its sordid history. In Alone in the Dark 2, most of the narrative is built around One-Eyed Jack's crew, which is not nearly as interesting nor horrifying. I am not even against the pirate theme, rather that it skips horror entirely for pulpy writing fitting of a children's book. It's a shame because not every idea or concept is bad, some drip with promise, but are all executed without interest. Alone in the Dark 2 feels like a parody. It looks and sounds great, but despite the best efforts of the team, the creative direction is rotten to the core. From concept, to game design, to narrative, I think it misses the point of what made the original game so effective for what it was. I know that the Alone in the Dark franchise is considered controversial at best past the first game, but I can only hope that everything past Alone in the Dark 2 is at least more interesting. I cannot bear to be put to sleep on One-Eyed Jack's pirate ship again.
BEST AITD GAME EVER
I went in expecting spooky horror. I got a voodoo puppet circus, terrible combat, and gangsters that sound like rejected ♥♥♥♥ Tracy villains.
Домучил Alone in the Dark 2. Я конечно пройду и "Alone in the Dark 3", и две более современные серии (2001, 2008)ибо хочу всю франчу переиграть до покупки Alone in the Dark (2024).
- Alone in the Dark
- Alone in the Dark
I tried this after playing a bit of the first and really enjoying its atmosphere and pacing, even with its jank and clunkiness. All I can say is it's pretty obvious the people in charge of the first one were not around for the second. It starts with a massive explosion at a gate and an almost Diehard vibe title drop, then you are immediately being shot at by... zombies? people? I have no idea. If you manage to somehow aim and survive properly, congratulations on getting through the first five minutes of the game only! Now run through a hedge maze crawling with goons, run out of bullets, and die. What a weird-ass sequel.
You're expected to think as fast as a cheetah runs while your character moves at a snails pace and has to have the most perfect aim in the world. This is a major downgrade to the first game. This absolute rubbish is impossible to do without a walk through. I was not able to finish it due to an issue with the "ice box" not working on the second guard, and the last thing I want to do is to restart this game. Horrible all the way. Zero fun was had. Just pure rage.
