Good!
I enjoyed the game immensely! The senseless destruction on an industrial scale and war for the sake of war is seen here much closer than RTS titles, but way more detachedly than a FPS where your own survival and performance takes all your attention and there is little to no consideration to what happens inbetween battles. Sure enough, leading the trench assaults is the easiest part if one has sufficient tactical sense for squad-level actions. But you are then shocked by realizing the obvious: you and your squad don't just despawn until the next battle. Your whole existence is a battle now. Rations and munitions has to be procured, even under fire. Sentries have to be posted, patrols sent, mud cleared from the dugouts, lice get ridden of, trenches rebuilt, ailments taken care of... and much much more. Who will you send? Who can you trust? What do you prioritize when all seem pressing and no outside hands available, your squad left to your leadership and care alone? Above all, how can the mission be completed in the face of the general burnout and shortages of everything? All quiet in the trenches has been so far tremendously revealing: while playing i pictured vividly the cruel randomness of harm and death both in and out of active combat. But your men really have to live with all the consequences of your orders, and of the simple fact of being there. In the end i grew tired and wary of any attachment to them, slowly accepting they are nameless cogs the massive killing and bleeding machine gives me to use. Shortly, the mission too becomes a distant hallucination, since my superior officers keep demanding more and more, never satisfied with the current level of killing and dying and defending and advancing. This was unexpected, considering that the aim of the game should have been for me to keep "my" people as much safe and alive as possible through the historically unwinnable war...
I didn't think initially I would enjoy this game however I was pleasantly surprised as I jumped in, to find the mechanics, story telling, depth and RNG elements were exactly what I would have expected. The base game, for my first playthrough I found relatively average in terms of difficulty, with only 1 warfare stage mission failure (which even that shocked me as that particular battle, I simply mismanaged my ammunition against more troops than I could take on, and an enemy machine gun was wrecking havoc upon the advance). From the tactics you employ on the field, to the management in the headquarters camp, to the choices you make, this is one of those unique indie games and I give the developers full credit for creating something so awesome. You feel attached to each soldier, some irritate you, some you like, some you are neutral, but as you progress through the game, every decision you make, it does feel relevant. Do you prioritise taking out that enemy sniper, for relief of your troops as they re-build their defences in the trenches, where an attack is imminent? Or do you hunker down instead and hope for the best when the attack comes? Do you prioritise your camp and troop needs, the field hospital is filling up with injured soldiers, but oh, that blasted lieutenant has decided to give you a large task in the middle of it, shall I call in a favour from him to give my men some relief and divert the task to another unit so I can focus on the above? Or do I risk the Senior Nurse becoming overwhelmed and thus reducing my own men's recovery time before the next offensive? I really hope they continue to expand on the re-playability, rng and systems up to release and potentially beyond. If there is one thing I would perhaps ask, which I think would add to the immersion, the sense of belonging for the player, and that personal attachment beyond what already exists, is to add the player "officer" to the actual game itself, allowing the player to feel very present and also vulnerable too. It would make the player feel that they are present in the world, rather than from a "god" like perspective, whilst still retaining that over arching strategy layer and command. Similarly, adding officers to other squads would again add to the immersion of them being led. Overall devs, definitely get your money's worth from what is offered :) Awesome stuff and the message from the experience provided in representing the War during WW1 comes across very well.
Under-rated, this is a very fun game! Fun turn-based strategy game where you try to keep your soldiers alive during WW1. Def one of my favor WW1 indie games.
This game is a 9/10 for me. This genre might not be for everyone, but if you liked Dispatch, Last Train Home, or Pale Beyond you will love this. It has the telltale style graphics which I enjoy. Balancing objectives is great, and the various dilemmas you face are well done. I wish you the "NCO" had the option to promote/recruit more men to the unit. I do know the game is early access so we will see. All in all it is a great game, I enjoyed all of it. I did encounter some glitches, some of the troop movement and battle turns are very wonky. and some of the later battles are very laggy, and I think I have a pretty capable PC. I do wish there were some achievements because I managed to keep everyone alive. All that to say Great game, worth the pickup
Brill game and well kept updated. Bought the day it came out, Well done Devs for keeping the game updated and fresh ideals
