You know how a snow globe sort of encapsulates within itself a certain kind of vibe and scenery? This is the closest way I can describe what this game is like. There is a certain aesthetic and feeling imprinted into this game and it just oozes with it. Themes like love, betrayal, the fleeting of youth, concepts like, coming of age, thinking about the world and your place in it. This entire game is just giving you a little peek through the window into Ringo and his friends lives. A lot of the dialogue is really interesting, even though it's very minimalist, you can get some really memorable quotes sometimes, some things really made me stop and think "Damn". You have about 40-60 days to live through the last days of high school and you are pretty much free to decide how you want to do that. You can be a delinquent all the way through, you can try to study and clean up your act, spend your days fishing, reading books in a cafe or working out, it has a kind of life-sim quality to it. It's a very good game with an overwhelming sense of melancholy attached to it. It's retrospective and almost meditative if you're in the right mindset when playing it. I recommend it wholeheartedly, it's unique and you'd be hard pressed to find another game like this. If the dev reads this review, I hope you keep on making games, you have a genuine authentic style to your work. I finished this game originally years ago and I still kept on thinking about it sometimes to this day, now playing it again with the new updates with the added content, it was even better. The ending always hits hard, I really love this game. Buy it for sure!
I have pretty mixed feelings about The Friends of Ringo Ishikawa. I don't really know if I can recommend it. Actually, I don't think I would. Ironically, I found out about this game through a completely random YouTube video about sitting in video games. Random, right? It sounded and looked interesting, and to be fair, it is an interesting game. A game that even taught me a little bit about myself and how I go through life. I completely understand why some people love this game. I also think it has real artistic value, and I respect what it's trying to do. The biggest strength of this game is definitely the V I B E S. It's got atmosphere for days. The pixel art—especially the backgrounds—is absolutely beautiful, and the soundtrack ties everything together perfectly. The story, the town, the characters... there's this constant charm that follows you around wherever you go. But if the question is whether I'd recommend *The Friends of Ringo Ishikawa* to my brain-rot, dopamine-chasing friends, then my answer is no. I already know they'd be completely confused about why I recommended it in the first place. So what are the issues I had with this game that the phenomenal V I B E S couldn't make up for? It took me about three sessions before the game finally somewhat clicked. At first, I honestly had to force myself to keep playing. There were long stretches where it felt like nothing was happening, and I never really knew what triggered events. Was I supposed to do something? Was I missing content? Or was I just supposed to keep waiting? The game kind of just throws you into its world and leaves you alone. It barely explains anything. Without the internet, I would've been completely lost. I constantly had a map open on my second monitor because I had no idea where I was supposed to go or what I was supposed to do. I know all of this is intentional, and I can appreciate what the developer was going for, but I just didn't enjoy it. Let me talk about the combat for a second, because the trailers put a lot of emphasis on it. At first, seeing that it was a brawler almost made me lose interest. But combat is actually a much smaller part of the game than you'd expect. The progression is pretty satisfying, though. Early on, you just get your ass kicked. Later, after putting time into training, you actually start feeling stronger, and beating people up becomes genuinely satisfying. That said, fights can also be pretty messy at times, and as I already mentioned, the game doesn't explain enough mechanics. I often wasn't even sure what was going on or what I was doing wrong. Thankfully, the game isn't your typical beat 'em up. It's much more of a life sim that lives and dies by its atmosphere—and that's exactly what it does well. All in all, I think *The Friends of Ringo Ishikawa* is simply too niche for most people. I can absolutely appreciate what it does well, but I just didn't enjoy it enough to recommend it.
