I tried to enjoy this game, I love the Alien Franchise but unfortunately for me this game has been nothing but frustration as it's riddled with bugs, I have had to restart several times due to bugs preventing me from progressing the story or even shooting enemies (Yes. I've had a bug where my marines refuse to fire) and it just feels clunky sometimes, I wish I could play it more because from what I have played I've enjoyed but I literally cannot play more because I will inevitably hit a brick wall of bugs that force me to stop or restart.
yes even if the archivist achievement is bugged
It has some flaws, but it is a solid game. Not everything is clear, and saves are not always where you would like them to be. Linearity is little irritating as well. Still, it's fun.
Don't expect a polished experience, but do expect something pretty unique. The game still has a lot of bugs, including some rare campaign breaking ones, graphical glitches, performance issues, and other jankiness. If you can power through that, and I would recommend that you do, you will find a gem in the rough. There isn't a direct point of reference I can make, but it's something of a cross between XCOM 2 and an RTS. Stealth is very important in this game, as moving around undetected is paramount in higher difficulties, and fighting your way through to the objective is generally ill-advised. When combat does break out, it can be very tense and exhilarating, and the fights themselves become more tactical as you progress the campaign and unlock more abilities. On a more strategic level it's a fine balance between treating your wounded, going on missions, managing resources, and making sure that you don't have too much downtime. The strategic level isn't too involved, there is no base building or anything like that, but it's just serviceable enough. There is a doom clock that starts about half-way through the game, but the main thing to worry about is the infestation level. It's a tracker that increases the number of spawns on the planet the more time passes. There is a way to lower it, but it comes very late in the game and requires resources. One of the interesting things about the game is that you can extract and continue the mission later with a fresh squad, but you're incentivized to complete each mission within as few trips as possible. If you're a fan of the Alien franchise, specifically Aliens, this game gets a lot right. Xenomorphs are formidable but if it bleeds, specifically acid, you can kill it. There are some fun toys to play with, like the fan-favorite smartgun, the game has a generally engaging storyline, and there's plenty of cool atmosphere. Aside the bugs and technical issues, there are some additional cons. Some of the later missions can be a slog to get through, and unless you're taking your time, abusing elevators to quicksave, fighting every onslaught wave, etc, the game is fairly hard on a first run through. All of my experience is from the highest difficulty, and while it didn't feel impossible, some parts were very frustrating. I would also say the story finale felt a little flat and didn't explore the themes it was setting up. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't great either. Is it worth playing though? Oh yeah, absolutely. I would like to see a proper sequel to this game, as Aliens: Dark Descent feels very much like a part 1 to a larger Aliens story.
i love this game :)
Bugs Bugs every where it randomly unable to run. and yes it is tactical game. I have to find a place to save and reboot a game many time to finish each stage. and it even randomly crash many times and this game do not let you save whenever you want. it have a condition It is a great game if there is no many bugs like this and plasma gun have servaral bugs too. it fire twice and some time it stuck at casting animation and that marine cannot fire weapons anymore. imagine you seriously play at Nightmare difficulty for immersive experience but one of 5 marine cannot fire his weapon and another one will not run and the progress that you have to stealth the shhtt out of it to pass massive amount of alien will be lost because you cannot save and reboot it to solve bugs. this happen too many time. that is why I spend 45+ hr to complete the first round and cannot refund it hahaha
