Age of Empires was one of the defining PC games of its era, a title that helped shape an entire generation of strategy gaming, which is why I’m genuinely angry at how its Definitive Edition was handled. It feels like a half-arsed cash cow: prettier graphics wrapped around too many of the same old problems, with nowhere near the care or ambition the original deserved. What makes it worse is seeing Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition receive a far better conversion, continued support, regular updates and meaningful improvements years later. The first Age of Empires deserved that same level of respect, instead of being treated like the forgotten sibling of the series.
