The mesh of roguelite and pinball is such a new and fun concept Unfortunately this project seems to have been abandoned
Finally, Satan's Hollow 2.
Unironically a hidden gem roguelite, hasn't had an update in a while but it's def worth picking up
Jeu très moyen, graphismes dégueux, même pour le genre. Et maintenant, jeu abandonné depuis 21 mois. Ne vous laissez pas avoir.
Giving this a downvote cuz you spelled "Lose" as "Loose" in both the achievements and in other parts of the game. I can't ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ stand when people mix up those 2 words. Literally my biggest online pet peeve. FIX THE DAMN TYPOS PLEASE
Against Great Darkness is a roguelite action game developed and published by Hitreg Studios that stands out through its willingness to experiment with genre conventions. While many roguelites borrow familiar ideas from twin-stick shooters, dungeon crawlers, or survival games, this title takes inspiration from an entirely different source by incorporating brick-breaker mechanics into a fast-paced battle against the forces of Hell. The result is a surprisingly creative blend of arcade action, strategic build crafting, and chaotic combat that feels fresh even within a genre filled with innovative concepts. The premise places players in the role of legendary pagan heroes and deities who find themselves trapped in the underworld. Their goal is straightforward: survive relentless demonic assaults and carve a path toward freedom. Although the narrative remains relatively simple, the setting provides an entertaining backdrop for the action. The game embraces themes drawn from mythology and religious imagery, creating an environment filled with monstrous enemies, dangerous bosses, and strange supernatural encounters. This combination gives the adventure a distinctive identity that separates it from more traditional fantasy roguelites. What truly defines the experience is its combat system. Instead of focusing exclusively on weapons and projectiles, players must manage magical disks that bounce around the battlefield and inflict damage on enemies. These disks function similarly to the ball in a classic brick-breaker game, but their integration into a roguelite shooter creates an entirely different dynamic. Success requires constant awareness of enemy positions, incoming attacks, and the movement of the disks themselves. The battlefield often becomes a whirlwind of projectiles, effects, and ricocheting attacks, creating a frantic but satisfying rhythm. As players progress through runs, they collect relics and upgrades that dramatically influence gameplay. These enhancements can alter the behavior of disks, strengthen attacks, increase survivability, or create powerful interactions between various abilities. Discovering effective combinations becomes one of the game's most rewarding features. Some builds focus on overwhelming offensive power, while others emphasize survival or utility. The constant search for stronger synergies encourages experimentation and ensures that no two runs feel exactly alike. The roster of playable characters further expands the game's replay value. Each hero possesses unique strengths, weapons, and attributes that significantly change how battles unfold. Some characters excel at aggressive combat, while others require a more calculated approach. Learning how each character interacts with different relics and upgrades adds another layer of depth to the progression system. This variety helps maintain player interest over the long term and provides compelling reasons to continue unlocking content. Enemy design contributes greatly to the challenge. Demonic creatures attack from multiple directions, often filling the screen with projectiles and hazards that demand precise movement. The game steadily increases the intensity of encounters as players advance deeper into Hell, ensuring that each new area introduces fresh threats and tactical considerations. Random events and unexpected encounters also add variety, preventing runs from becoming predictable and forcing players to adapt to changing circumstances. Boss encounters represent some of the most exciting moments in the game. These battles combine all of the mechanics introduced throughout a run and test the player's mastery of movement, positioning, and build optimization. Managing bouncing disks while avoiding deadly attack patterns creates encounters that feel both challenging and rewarding. Victories are earned through skillful play rather than simple numerical advantages, making successful boss defeats especially satisfying. Visually, Against Great Darkness adopts a retro-inspired style that prioritizes readability and gameplay clarity. The graphics may appear simple at first glance, but the clean presentation works well during the most intense battles. Enemy attacks remain easy to identify, environmental hazards are clearly visible, and the action never becomes overly cluttered despite the large number of effects on screen. This design philosophy allows players to focus on strategic decision-making without being distracted by unnecessary visual noise. The game's audio complements the action effectively. Energetic music accompanies the increasingly frantic combat, while impactful sound effects provide satisfying feedback during battles. Together, the audiovisual elements create an atmosphere that reinforces the feeling of fighting through a hostile and dangerous underworld. The fast pace of the soundtrack helps maintain excitement throughout extended play sessions. The game's largest obstacle is its complexity. New players may find themselves overwhelmed by the number of systems operating simultaneously. Managing disk trajectories, understanding relic interactions, avoiding enemy attacks, and building effective strategies can require a significant adjustment period. Those expecting a simpler arcade experience may initially struggle with the learning curve. However, players who invest the time to understand its mechanics will uncover a remarkably deep and rewarding roguelite. Against Great Darkness succeeds because it takes risks where many games choose familiarity. Its unusual fusion of brick-breaker mechanics, roguelite progression, mythological themes, and bullet-heavy combat creates an experience that feels genuinely original. While it may not appeal to every player due to its demanding systems, it offers a level of creativity and replayability that is increasingly rare. For fans of challenging roguelites who enjoy experimenting with builds and mastering unconventional mechanics, this journey through Hell delivers a memorable and highly engaging adventure. Rating: 7/10
Game had a great premise and start, but I cannot say it's worth it in any way for being abandonware. 19 months (as of this post) without any updates, and it seems this would be a common occurrence from said dev. Unfortunate, could have been a fantastic full game.
