So, I feel like I've seen enough of what the game's got to offer to make a review of it's current state. This is not to say that it's full release won't be worth it, or that this prologue won't necessarily be improved. However, for the current state, I don't really recommend it, on the basis of it being very lacking in terms of gameplay variety. I've played a few runs, and all that really changes is the boss at the end. For the most part, you don't get to see most of the different items, and runs are way too short to make use of them. The enemies are always the same from what I can tell, so for most of the run, it's the same thing over and over again, which isn't great. Usually, with a roguelike, this is intentional to a point but you can change up the player's mechanics itself to keep the game fresh, but from what i can see... not really the case in this game. Pretty much all of the characters play the same. It's just a matter of hitting the disk while you're dodging enemies. Sure, different characters interact with the disk in different ways, but it's fundamentally the same. Again, this could change in the full release, but this is a review for the prologue, not the full release. So, variety isn't great. But, that's not all the faults I could find. This game has probably the worst meta progression I've ever seen in a roguelike. You earn money dreadfully slow, and most of the upgrades are either completely insignificant or completely broken (as in they literally do not work). Some of the upgrades scale up to 8000 for a single upgrade, and when you're only getting 150-250 on average in a run, where most runs take around 10 maybe 15 minutes, that's a long damn time for one very small upgrade. I REALLY hope this gets improved because it is horrible. Now, I'll leave off saying that the game is really visually pleasing and I love the aesthetic. I know my review is mostly negative, but I do have to give props to the visuals because it's really nice to look at and just overall great. However, all in all, I can't really recommend this. I don't think it's bad beyond redemption, far from it, in fact. But, I think that for it's current state in the prologue, it's not worth playing. In other words, give it some time, and let them cook.
So, I am posting this review, as a game beta tester, who has been supplied a copy of the game for testing and bug fixing. I want to start off, by saying that the prologue is just a taster of what's to come. Please don't be put off by there only being one circle to complete. The game will come with 3 differing difficulty levels, with a selection of different enemies, and attacks, items, etc for you to progress through. The base game will be released (on the 10th April at $6.99). In my opinion, this is a decent market value for the content that you can get, and the replayability of the game, with the meta progression that's available, as well as the unlockable content. My only drawback, which the dev has yet to fix, is the descriptions on the items and characters on how to unlock them. They will currently unlock after you have done "something". Even as a beta tester, I'm not aware of what that "something" is. The difficulty spike of the game is where the challenge lies. Even on ascension level 0, the difficulty spike between the circles, then facing the final bosses can be a little too challenging. I understand that Dirly has been working behind the scenes to adjust the difficulty levels of each circle to fall in line with expectations. In the full game, you have the following: • 9 pagans with 3 Circles of Hell to explore. • Over 100 items to unlock • 6 bosses currently available • 21 steam achievements to obtain There is more than that, however, this is a good overview of the content that will come with the base game. For $6.99, I don't think that's all that bad. I've seen games priced at a higher price-point, with significantly less development and content. Other than that, being a part of this game whilst it has grown and developed has been fun. Being a part of changes that have come to the game, as a result of my testing, bug finding, and overall stress testing of the game, makes me feel proud to say that whereas this game may not be for everyone, for those who like roguelites, brickbreakers, and bullet hell games, you will for sure enjoy the full release of this.
Playthrough here: https://youtu.be/glZj3M6Lgmw Wow! That was a lot of fun a bullet hell breakout roguelite game never would have thought of that combination, but seeing it in action it really works definitely worth checking out the prologue and wishlisting the full release. The First Map was a Blast.
Fun game! Definitely going to check out the full release!
Okay so I think a few basic improvements could really help this game. Firstly the enemies that dive-bomb you are incredibly easy to blend into the background. This could be easily solved by making them have the same particle effects as the bullets- the bullets stand out really well against the purple backdrop, and it makes the game much easier to parse on a glance- which is what's needed when you're trying to juggle both your balls and dodging. Secondly, I think there should be some feedback as to when the balls are being released, because your bullets and the balls blend in and when you're focused on juggling/dodging it's easy to forget there's another ball on the way and you should pay attention to that. Thirdly, there were multiple times when I thought I had just saved my ball from oblivion but was a little bit too late and had just quickened it's fall. I would like to see how you solve this issue, instead of just giving you one myself
