Solid exploration and 'rhythmic platformer' game, personally I found the world very endearing to navigate, takes about 3 hours to finish, but the game does not have achievements for the optional objectives, so you could maybe explore it for another 2 hours on top of it. The visuals and the coloring really stand out, it has the whole surreal exploration going for it similar to Dreaming Sarah, but the mythos are very different, not really sure which culture these come from or maybe they are just original. The game essentially has 2 parts to it, you have overworld that mostly works as an exploration/narrative segment, sometimes with various side-quests and objectives, and you also have a couple of platforming gauntlets with low to mid difficulty. Update: they added like 20 achievements for optional objectives https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3652387818 (I mean look at these backgrounds, the game has so many of them, almost every second screen is like a gorgeous painting, they looked decent in the trailer, but actually playing the game it's just very mesmerizing) Even though it's not a hard game, there are some rough sections that have very tight timings, maybe not like 'precision platformer' hard, but they can be a little frustrating, especially in the game that otherwise is so easy going. Most of the jump timing is actually tied to the beat of the music, which is kinda interesting, eventually I found it easier to memorize the melody instead of using my eyes, actually makes it easier. It also has good gameplay variety, aside from adding various new mechanics, there are also small mini-games you can find around the world. The game feels densely populated with weird creatures and strange characters, and they all have some unusual design to them, it's like the entire game is 'one big fan art bait'. I assume it's just pixel art, but it almost has that watercolor painting vibe to it.
Pros:
(+) The design of the world and mythos really stand out, it has so many weird looking characters, and it's like all of them deserve some fan art, I really loved the warm colors of the game and just how much variety it had with no 2 locations looking the same. (+) It has some optional exploration, for some reason they didn't tie any achievements to it, so it's like a 3 hour game, with a few hours of extras. (+) Endearing and enjoyable exploration, has some gameplay variety with various mini-games and mechanics
Feedback:
Just some random things: - I have to say the game feels very lite on achievements, it only has 4 of them for the narrative when you have dozens of optional tasks that have nothing attached to them. I would encourage to reward the player with achievements for any 'heart' objectives for example, as well as maybe getting higher scores on mini-games - in the dinner game, maybe you could color code which order you making, I know it's just left to right, but it's easy to lose track of it - the game was not hard, but some of the timing felt strangely punishing, maybe you could make the death hitboxes a bit smaller than the actual sprites, it's very easy to touch the edges in this game, overall the timing with some vanishing platforms was perhaps too frequent - sometimes those water boosts were not giving me enough distance, you kinda have to fiddle with them sometimes - is there an issue with the game not counting tickets exactly? Sometimes I feel like I take 3 but it put in 2 or a different number (mostly in areas where you can get more than a maximum - I had one random crash, posted it in the forum Overall Thoughts: 8/10 Aside from a few random difficulty spikes it was a very wholesome journey, lovely characters, lovely world to explore, gorgeous backgrounds and just very sweet experience. It's a little shorter than I expected at 3 hours, but like I said, they didn't have achievements for every hidden thing, you can find more things to do. For me personally the backgrounds really carried the game, I have played many dream exploration games, but this one was just so vibrant no matter where you look. What a game! I was genuinely shocked at how good it is, I fell in love with the pixel art immediately, I was unsure of how it's story would be, but I was so suprised after playing through this. I can feel so much passion put into this game, every bit of dialogue reads beautifully and puts a smile on my face. I really enjoyed the rhythm platforming, just as I was starting to get bored of a mechanic a new one would be thrown in the spice it up. It was satisfying to clear each section and work your way up to the next floor. As I mentioned, the art is insanely good, the colours and designs are just amazing, so well done, it was exciting to see the next area just for the art alone. Each aunty "fight" was super fun as well, I liked how it built of the main mechanic of the Majong tiles being placed in time with the song, and each encounter added an extra twist. Also have to mention how much I learned about Peranakan culture, just super cool they added all these extra photos and descriptions. So yeah, really well done!! I hope this game can succeed :)
How to start.. I really really love this game! For a SEASian, this game hits very close to home! Imagine whimsy, story-based platformer, with a huge root to Peranakan Culture and lore! Imagine Ib - old RPG Maker feels, and OFF zones, where we are exploring a place where a lot of ghosts, creatures and non-humans called it home. Gameplay is simple - we do platforming to evade obstacles to get to the goal with rhythm to guide us, and for some, we collect Joss Papers to appease the four Aunties of the House. (You need to play it to feel it, i swear). The characters are charming, and the humors are so on the point to spread the culture of SEA. And so many foods. Good foods. Made me always hungry everytime I played this! I played this thoroughly in 3 playthrough, and I really love this game so much! Here's my playlist of my playthrough! And again, can't recommend this enough! Please get this game and support Singaporean and SEA Game dev! https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL9kvj12mTMDYBQI_QCxupRQ-7TJGBzBo4
A game made with a lot of heart, which is a term I do not use lightly. One of those great indie games where I could really feel the soul of the creators in it, and was genuinely delighted to learn what could be lurking around the next screen over.
Highly recommend! A really charming and cosy game with wonderful dialogue, story, and a fascinating insight into Singaporean and Peranakan folklore / culture (you don't need to know anything about them to enjoy it!) I haven't laughed at a game like this since Undertale. The core game is platforming and exploration with various rhythm based minigames - all of which are very nicely balanced between challenge and fun and don't outstay their welcome. The real charm is in the character interactions and not knowing what to expect next! You can tell the Devs really poured their soul into this. The writing, music and art direction all support the fun and whimsical tone and there's a warm glow around the whole experience. I expect that goes double if you're familiar with all the cultural tropes too!
Educational, Aesthetic, Demons and Rythms
What really stood out to me is how educational n informative the game is without feeling like a lesson. As someone who’s not Peranakan, I actually learned a lot! Walking thru the aesthetic of Peranakan. The tiles, architectures, furniture, foods and etc atmosphere feels like that u watch old fantasy movie like Alice in wonderland(?). Everything works together to support the storytelling and the cultural learning (I did google more due to interest). It’s cosy, calm, and thoughtfully designed. As someone who loves supernatural themes, I really appreciated that the game doesn’t rely on jumpscares or exaggerated horror tropes. The afterlife here feels soft and respectful, like ghosts are just another part of life rather than something to fear like in Spirited Away movie adventure but platformer rythm games. If you enjoy cultural narrative, supernatural themes and platformer rythm games, I would just simply reccomend.
Highly charming game with quirky humor and loads of cool things to learn about Peranakan/Singaporean culture! Warning: it can be difficult to not get hungry while playing this! While the core of this game is something of a rhythm-based puzzle platformer, there's a great deal of optional minigames that push that bounding box, often to great comedic effect. As funny as I found the game, I also really enjoyed a lot of the art as well! Every now and then you'll get hit with a surprisingly pretty composition out of nowhere....this game is bursting at the seams with the devs' creative spirit. The absolute shining part about this game is definitely the dialogue. I LOVED the dialogue. Helpful Mimi sets the stage perfectly...one moment I REALLY loved was during a conversation with
the Snake, as when I asked them to tell me about themselves, they gave a really simple answer of "I am a snake" or something along those lines, and while such a simple answer is definitely very funny in of itself when I've already got plenty of questions about this giant snake, I decided to ask the same question again for the sake of it (even though the dialogue box was greyed out) and was very surprised to find that they actually DID decide to elaborate more after that!
While I do think the game is certainly a worthwhile short and sweet experience, I do still have some critiques of my own. Regarding QoL, the first thing that comes to mind is how menu navigation can be a bit less convenient than I'd like (for example, you cannot hold Up/Down in the lift menu to scroll through floors quickly, and I believe the same goes for a few other menus like the Inventory). I also did have a bit of difficulty finding the
Noodles
NPC as the clue to finding them was a little bit vague, although I do think that NPC and especially the circumstances of their appearance is a very lovely addition (I only worry about it since I like going for achievements because 100% a game gives it a sort of spotlight within my profile, and this NPC is indeed vital for this) And my last and biggest critique: The Mortal is 11 years old instead of 12....it's a bit of a dealbreaker I'm sorry....
Such a charming and cute game! The art, animation, and story drew me in and I have no regrets. The writing absolutely made me laugh out loud at sections, and all the characters are just so well designed. Also, don't be afraid if you are not great at platforming. I'm kinda bad at platforming, and while it did take a lot of tries for some of the levels, I haven't yet come across an unbeatable-for-me level, or a point where I feel like rage quitting. This was definitely helped by a couple measures the devs put in for people like me - like the fire safety binturong. Really appreciated those optional crutches (and if you don't use them, you'll have a lot more challenge, so I think most people will find the core gameplay engaging)! If you are also bad at platforming like me, expect 2-3x the length of gameplay compared to others that are good at platforming xD (another reviewer said something like 3 hours total and I think my total playtime will be like 6-8 hours in the end)
Love it so far! Super cute sound & visuals, charming characters.
