After Rain : Phoenix Rise is a game for people who miss the difficulty and fun of old school platforming. Combining elements from Super Meat Boy and the earliest Mega Man games and combining it with a unique story to follow this is a game that will scratch the itch. Great music and a unique art style complete the package, a package that comes without micro-transactions; you buy the game you get the full game. Try the game out and support a true indie developer. First, let me start off by saying the creator of this game is an AMAZING guy. David is one of the most creative people i've ever had the honor of working with/becoming friends with. After Rain: Phoenix Rise is an amazing indie game. I was lucky enough to play the beta test, and let me tell you I had a blast then, so you can imagine my excitement the day of the final release. I'm going to be honest here and say I'm not the best gamer ever, and I totally struggled a couple of times. But I can really imagine a person who loves a challenge to really fall in love with this game. ARPR comes off as the type of game you don't want to take breaks from. When I first played the beta, my friend and I played all of it in one sitting. And in the final version, I'm 4 hours in already after just picking it up the other day. Probably my favorite thing about this game is the artwork. David literally did all of that himself and that is the most impressive thing i've seen in a long time. It really blows me away how he accomplished that. This game is his baby and I respect that so much. I'm excited to keep playing and become a better and smarter gamer!

The graphics are unique and eye-catching, with that very pleasing retro feel -- something you'd expect of the early 90's. Looks very hand done, which adds to the charm. The story creates a sense of urgency while playing, and complements the post-apocalyptic atmosphere. I can tell a lot of care went into the construction of each level, and I enjoyed the little details -- a pretty tree that you can climb into for no reason other than to have a nice place to sit, for example. The gameplay itself is reminiscent of oldschool platformers with which you're already familiar, but also draws inspiration from modern games in the genre; the level design could be compared to Super Meat Boy (as another player mentioned) and the combat reminds me somewhat of Spelunky, or really just any 2D game that involves jumping and shooting. What I love about this game is that you are left to your own devices to figure out ways to beat each level. There's no tutorial (you can find the controls in the menu), and you're given no strategies or hints for completing each level. That is what makes this game truly retro, and it's something that I miss from 90% of new video games. You'll find yourself at times questioning if you can make a certain jump, or if there's any concievable way to defeat a certain enemy or obstacle. This forces you to get your hands dirty and really play the game. It's a puzzle, it's a real challenge, it's action-packed, and it definitely requires some skill -- don't expect After Rain to hold your hand and drag you through each level (I'm looking at you, modern Zeldas). If you're looking for a game that provides you with a challenge, rather than just stealing your time, then After Rain is a worthy purchase. I will definitely be coming back to this game until I beat it.

After purchasing After Rain: Phoenix Rise I can say I am very pleased. This is an easy to learn game that runs very smoothly and will keep you guessing as you continue through the levels. Every time I took a break from the game I found myself thinking about the level I was stuck on wanting to go back and play. The only downside to playing the game so frequently were some of the cut scenes that could not be skipped. In the future I hope that there will be more game modes because this game has a lot of potential and is only scratching the surface! Even though I have beat the game already I still play it regularly because of how much I enjoy it. I highly recommend this game if you are looking to find some challenge as well as an interesting story mode!

I have been following the updates on this game for some time now and when i saw it went live i picked it up on the spot. From the time i started the game i couldnt put it down, very unique and highly addictive. I loved the controls and shooting style in this game. Each level is very challenging, some will take multiple times to complete which gives you great satisfaction when you finally do reach the end or next check point. This game has great replayability, I have completed this game and will be restarting from the beginning to beat again. I would highly recommend this game to anyone.

I can highly recommend this game to anyone looking for a great platform shooter. This game is the perfect balance of challenging yet rewarding gameplay. The gameplay is simple enough virtually anyone can play and yet certain moments will leave even the most experienced gamer trying their hardest. It also balances the feel of an old-school 8 or 16 bit game with the visuals of a futuristic one. The developer continues to work on DLC and adding to an already great game. Once again I can highly recommend this game and give it a 10/10.
