Engage enemy ships, fortifications and sea monsters in vicious combat, employing your best tactics to out-manoeuvre and out-gun the enemy. Weather and environmental conditions affect your battles: Tidal waves, lightning strikes, volcanic bombardments and blizzards are just some of the modifiers that impact your strategy.
Abandon Ship focuses on ‘Age of Sail’ ships in a Fantasy setting, framed in an Art Style inspired by classic Naval Oil Paintings.

Life in this world can be brutal. Death is permanent. But the journey doesn’t end if your vessel is destroyed. You are the Captain, and as long as the Captain is alive, there is always hope.
By escaping to a Lifeboat, or even being stranded, alone in the water, there is a chance to survive and fight your way back to the top.

Combat is tactical and savage. Each battle is hard-fought, always on the edge of defeat. Your only chance of overcoming the odds is to employ every advantage you can bring to bear.
Dozens of diverse weapons and upgrades are available to utilise on the various ship classes you can acquire. Customise your vessels appearance by capturing enemy ships intact. Your trusty crew gain experience and traits to help provide an edge over the enemy.

Explore a fantasy world that reacts to your actions. Engage in piracy and become a hunted Captain. Undertake quests that may drastically change the environment – or the entire world. Make decisions that create allies or enemies that return to help or seek vengeance.
Play multiple stories, including the main campaigns tale of overthrowing a Cthulhu-esque Cult, a Freeplay mode about rebuilding the legacy of your forebears, and shorter tales, such as the combat campaign focused on rescuing your sister, or Sword of the Cult, where you play as one of Father’s children, climbing the ranks until you’re granted the ultimate weapon: The Kraken.

An overall interesting design in this genre, and the first few hours will be pretty fun. However you'll find the repetition sets in rather quickly, along with a mostly lifeless world. Writers have done their best to create interesting scenarios and build a lovecraft inspired setting, but often times it's fairly disjointed. While not an absolutely inspiring game, there's enjoyment to be had still, but it's fairly limiting. I would recommend the game at a budget price, but not neccessarily at full.
This game was deeply cathartic for me, though not as one might expect from the gameplay. I got around to playing Abandon Ship as I was going through a similar process in spirit as the main character goes through, making it even more personal than I expected when I wishlisted it years before. Meta themes, possible meta spoilers:
It is a story of recognizing, escaping, and overcoming a Tyrannical Father, both without and within, a very real archetype of human experience. It also hints at the Devouring Mother as sequel material.
As for the gameplay, there is some learning curve, with multiple chances given to avoid catastrophe upon failure (fleeing, lifeboats, chance-based events). But of course proper planning and preparation is a solid (but not guaranteed) defense. If you can dial in on a routine and optimal build for the many battles ahead, especially for a longer comprehensive playthrough, then you can listen to other things outside the game while you sail the seas. Music, podcasts, lectures, sermons, even shanties.
Abandon Ship
Decent naval strategy game with some interesting mechanics, and I did enjoy learning how everything works at first. But for me, the fun didn’t last very long once the repetition started to kick in. Pros -

Core mechanics are well thought out
Managing the ship and crew is interesting at the start
Overall gameplay feels solid initially
Cons -

Becomes very monotonous after a few hours
Main story feels pretty average and not very engaging
Turns grindy quickly and starts to feel like a chore
Lost its fun factor for me after the first 2–3 hours
Quick Summary - I think Abandon Ship is fine mechanically, and I liked it at the beginning, but it gets repetitive and grindy way too fast. For me, it just didn’t stay fun long enough to keep me invested.
Terribly boring and repetitive gameplay loop. Doesn't really matter whether there's a fire, leak, man in the water, or general repairs, you just click one of your men to go there and it's all the same. Admittedly, the game has interesting elements, like closing distance to the other ship, different weapons and damage types, but it's just not enough and there is hardly any variation.
This is an amazing game with suprisingly comeplex combat and an engaging story! it can be extreemly frustrating on harder dificulties due to the limited saves.. but that's part of the fun!!
Incredibly repetitive. Once you understand the two or three useful game mechanics, the game is just to repeat them endlessly. The exploration component is boring as well...no surpises and nothing interesting to discover.
Linux Multi-Monitor-Bug (can't select/click any items in the start menu) is still not fixed... after 6 (!) years! :-(
