Just a information, neither a thumbs up nor down. The game was re-released as a Total War Saga, which it never was. It was intended as a DLC for Total War Shogun 2 before release, but was changed to a standalone on release. This game was released in 2012 with the engine and parts of Shogun 2. So anyone reading this before buying: expect an older style game.
i hate japan western glory raaahhh royal marines wipe 10 trillion shogatai
Fall of the Samurai campaing is essentially the exact opposite of the Rise of the Samurai campaing. Instead of going back in time we're moving ahead, instead of focusing more on swords and spears there's guns and artillery everywhere. I think the Rise of the Samurai campaing gives you a pretty easy start to get used to the game, the vanilla game is not too difficult and not too easy and Fall of the Samurai I think gives you the hardest battles. I'll never forget the friendly fire I caused from my own ships artillery bombing my own army... +A new campaing, going forwards in time, focusing more on guns and artillery. A harder start compared to the vanilla game and Rise of the Samurai campaing. +New clans, new units. +As expected from a new campaing new mechanics come along as well, really fun. Love it. The vanilla campaing, Rise of the Samurai and Fall of the Samurai campaings all offer unique battles, units, mechanics and just a whole lot of fun. Its like having 3 games in one. This is a little off topic but if you know about War Thunder one of the reasons I absolutely adore that game is because its essentially 3-6 games in one. Tanks, planes, ships, WW2, Cold War, Modern Day... I love it when games do this, I love it when the main game focuses on something and does it really well and the devs expand on it without going too crazy and this is exactly that. The vanilla game is great with its setting and mechanics and gameplay, the Rise of the Samurai campaing adds onto it by taking things to an earlier date and offering new things to play around with while keeping the same, solid gameplay and Fall of the Samurai does the exact same except going into the future this time rather then the past. I love it, I love all of it.
i would rather buy crack
The campaign is masochistic. I played as Saga and even my Imperial allies declared war on me out of blue. Soon the entire Japan was against me and I had to deal with ships coming from everywhere at every turn. I can't ignore the ships because I'm in a big island and a single ship that slip through can land a full stack army or destroy my income by blockading and/or bombarding infrastructure. I have to fight all naval battles manually otherwise the ships take massive damage even with overwhelming odds when auto-resolving. I have to do this multiple times a turn. Every naval battle is slow, bugged and basically the same. While I like many things in this game it don't value my time and is a tedious slop for 95% of the time. It's the worst of Shogun 2 made worse. Note: I don't have 0 hours. It's just that I own Shogun 2.
The best gunpowder total war game for sure
The best strategy game I ever played. Here are the reasons: -The progression from traditional melee based to gun powder based units. -It requires you to properly manage your population to not revolt from modernizing. -The mods on the workshop -A standalone dlc that does not required the based shogun 2 to play. -You can recruit foreign units to fight for you. -beautiful war ships.
DAYUM LILY-LIVERED COWARDS! Your men are running from the battlefield, sir!
I wanna be more positive, because I really did love Shogun 2... ...but the AI pathfinding in forts in FOTS is just broken, to the point where sieges are never fun. Storming forts isn't fun because between 1/3 to 2/3 of the AI defenders will just be stuck in place, even ignoring you positioning units right behind them shooting them in the back, and defensive sieges aren't fun because you'll experience your units utterly failing to reposition in a sensible manner at all. It's a bit astonishing how a DLC breaks a core game mechanic this badly. It's not "dealbreaker" bad, but it's considerably worse than it ought to have been. Edit: Actually, this is a dealbreaker. I'm now regularly encountering defensive siege battles in which literally every single one of my units wind up freezing in place after a few minutes. I'm not running the game with a single mod. Additionally, the AI is so obsessed with the shore bombardment feature and landing troops in the very rear of the map that a good 90% of what I do every turn is chasing off armies landing in my starting provinces and sinking ships blowing everything along the shore to pieces. The allied AI clans don't seem the least bothered to intercept the enemy fleets passing by, nor do they seem inclined to advance on the shore towards any of the campaign objectives. FOTS is bugged trash.
Possibly the strongest DLC in total war, ever.
