I was absolutely hooked to the storyline, was too curious on what would happen next but i sadly had to force myself to stop. I enjoyed the graphics of the game, the immersion of the location and the bond you build with Hugo and Amicia. Sadly the game had to end and the story still spooks inside my thoughts. Altough i defenitely liked the game, sometimes mechanics are a bit wonky, and some parts are quite hard.
I loved the first game, so jumping into this one was an easy decision. I'm really glad I did. Amicia and Hugo's story pulled me right back in, and before long I was completely invested in what happened to them. This game is absolutely gorgeous. Every area looks incredible, the music fits every scene perfectly, and the voice acting is some of the best I've heard in a game. The relationship between the two siblings feels real, and there were plenty of moments where you could genuinely feel what they were going through. I also liked that the game lets you play the way you want. You can sneak around, fight your way through, or get creative with fire, smoke, and your tools. I never felt like it forced me into one style, and it even rewards you for sticking with the way you like to play. It's not perfect, though. I had some small hitching here and there, although that could've just been my PC. The puzzles were okay, but they felt like they were added because every adventure game needs puzzles. None of them were very memorable. My biggest gripe is when the game is screaming, "Run for your life!" but then only lets you walk like you're out for an evening stroll. It completely kills the urgency. Those complaints are pretty minor, though. The story, characters, music, and atmosphere are what make this game special. It had me hooked from beginning to end, and I'd easily give it a 9/10. If you liked Innocence, I can't imagine not recommending this one.
👍👍👍The story's still great. Amicia and Hugo hit just as hard as the first game. The rat swarms are insane, the atmosphere is thick, and when the game looks good it really looks good. I'm having fun with it, no doubt. 👎👎👎But some of this stuff is just weird. Amicia's mom looks like she aged 20 years when the timeline barely moved. And the NPCs? Dudes look fine but the women look rough. Plus they cope paste some of the crowd, Kinda lazy. Now the real problem. I got a 9070 XT. Game forces this "Resolution Optimizer" on me with no way to turn it off. Looks blurry as hell even on Ultra. Meanwhile NVIDIA users get DLSS no problem. No FSR, no option to disable it, nothing. Had to download some mod called OptiScaler and basically fake my GPU being NVIDIA just to get FSR 4 working. Game looks sharp now but stutters sometimes. Still way better than the blurry mess before though. I wish game companies would stop sucking NVIDIA or AMD's a*s for money to make this stuff exclusive. Just add the good features from both sides and let players actually enjoy the game they paid for. Modders shouldn't have to do your job for you.
Let me begin this review by stating that I really liked the first game, A Plague Tale Innocence, it was a great story with excellent pacing and character development. And it's because of this that I regret playing this game and hope to dissuade any other fan of the first from experiencing this travesty that has all the hallmarks of a bad sequel, with character-assassinating and retconning so much of what made the first game good. I adored the first game because it was medieval in the true sense of the word, where yes, there was violence and brutality but there were ALSO various social protections against violence, chivalric code, and progress being made in science and learning. There was a story and meaning to it. Requiem on the other hand, is set in ye grimdark olde dung ages, where everything revolves around violence, and superstitions, any “nice” place is secretly a filthy mass grave underneath with gore for the sake of gore and nearly everyone is a psychopath and it's all just filled with nihilism to the point it all feels meaningless in the end. There were multiple times where the game introduces an idyllic scene where it was obvious it wasn't going to last and it devolved into senseless killing, and the game does this over and over; and in the same way too, either an Uncharted-style chase sequence or the protagonist is trapped in an arena and cannot progress until she kills a horde of soldiers, only for the game to castigate her for it immediately afterwards in an incredibly unsubtle fashion. I guess the writers never read the adage “one death is a tragedy, a million a statistic”, because they seem incapable of writing a tragic scene without introducing entire crowds of innocent bystanders to get gratuitously killed off. And this game does Amicia and her companions from the first game massive disfavor, essentially butchering their character arcs and personalities from the first game (and in case of
Beatrice
, literally butchering them for cheap trauma porn and
dead mom trope
) and the new characters introduced in the sequel are no better. Most are killed off before they get a chance to do anything interesting, and whilst the inquisition in the first game were stereotypical villains, at least they were consistent and well tied together with the gameplay and worldbuilding. Meanwhile, in Requiem you get several factions, all equally infuriatingly nonsensical and incompetent as well as cartoonishly evil, and most of the new lore and concepts either just contradict or cheapens the story of the first game. And all this just to end with a tragic ending that in no way feels earned. I’m not against games with a sad ending or characters making bad or selfish decisions, I loved Clair Obscur Expedition 33 for those exact reasons, but there all characters had clear motivations and character arcs that tied together with the main theme and game world, whereas Requiem constantly requires all characters to completely change their minds and act against their own interests several times for no other reason than to force in more conflict. But perhaps its biggest sin is to shoehorn in so many horrible scenes and mass deaths the protagonists themselves caused (which in turn also makes it incredibly hard to root for them), that when the ending came, rather than feeling sad as the writers intended, I just felt desensitized to all the ridiculous catastrophes that had been happening that I just felt “well, guess it’s over now”, not devastated, not crying, just an angry disappointment at the writers for making a story that’s nothing other than a long cavalcade of cheap emotional shots with no real progress or meaning at the end.
