A Foretold Affair

A Foretold Affair is a steampunk dating sim where you play as an outsider trying to find and woo the spouse you saw in your vision. This is an interesting take on the dating sim formula, where you decide your spouse in the beginning and spend the game getting closer to them. Most of the routes, however, left me feeling uncomfortable. The main character is insufferable and spends a lot of the game overstepping boundaries, and this makes the eventual romances feel unrealistic. The character designs are pretty cool, but the personalities felt held back and hard to relate with. I loved the worldbuilding in this, especially the society the MC comes from, but details about this world were often buried under stilted dialogue. While playing, I was bored, wishing things would move a little faster or that the MC would be a little less creepy. I appreciate how much love went into this project, and I adore the queer diversity here, but I can't say I enjoyed this game all that much, and there are too many stunning queer visual novels out there for me to recommend this one very highly.

I've played through the game, all routes, all endings. Its worth the playthroughs. While the central plot is mostly the same, seeing the different interactions with the characters is fun and you get insight into them on each playthrough. The various ending texts were interesting as well. I used the skip scene text past the first play through of the routes. There were some I definitely liked better then others and I felt it was worth the play throughs.

Another bad review of mine coming up, be prepared. I have to honestly admit that it took me two attempts to actually get into this game. Not because it was boring or anything, but because it had a slow start (in my opinion) and I just wasn't in the right mindset to get into a game like that. Though, now that I finished and fooled around with one of the routes (namely January's), I have to say that the slow start isn't a bad thing. This game mainly focuses on the story and the interactions between characters. At first I thought that the lack of focus on the romance was going to bore me sooner or later, but in the end I actually found myself enjoying the way the story was told and though 'romance' isn't the main focus it isn't like it's completely missing either.. As you can probably tell already, I'm a bit all over the place with this one. All in all, after finishing it for the first time I didn't feel like I had been playing a game, but rather like I had just finished reading a good book. If that makes any sense? I suppose the only thing that bothered me, was the avatar of Buffalo Seer at one point. [spoiler] Since Buffalo Seer loses their left hand at one point, but then the avatar still has it whenever it changes during talks, while the right hand never shows, so-- maybe an accident of switching left and right around at one point? [/spoiler] And the type of letters were a bit hard on the eyes after a while, but that was probably all I can complain about right now. Then again, I only played through one route so far and have two more to go. When I said that I had been fooling around with January's route, I meant that I was fooling around with the different choices and true to their word, interactions and conversations change a bunch, sometimes even offering up further choices one hadn't been offered before, so playing through a route more than once or twice is an interesting aspect of the game not every game can keep up with always changing one meek sentence maybe, before switching back on to the main plot,but not this game though. I'm looking forward to trying out Kea's and then Piper's route next, curious to find out the kind of adventure waiting for me there. Definitely recommend this game.

Disappointing and boring.

The characters are over-designed and you'll have a better experience if the first thing you do is turn the 'music' off, but A Foretold Affair's writing and the dialogue are all on point. The characters are likeable, relatable and believable, the story is engaging and the game is exactly long enough; it neither overstays its welcome nor leaves unanswered questions. Worth the purchase price and the fifteen or so hours of your time it will take to get through it.

Started off rocky but it quickly came together. Loved the art, and there's a world here I'd like to see more of, as it's really intriguing. The characters were all great.

Pretty, but underdeveloped. The Lore of the world and the characters seem interesting, but nothing goes deep enough to be satisfactory. To be fair, I've only played through once, but in that play through the relationships never get a chance to blossom and instead are bogged down by tedious and purposeless conversations. The end, while happy, was lackluster and inconculsive. It's unfortunate because there is a lot of potential with the bare bones of the game.
