As many have already highlighted, A Fistful of Gun looks excellent, the art style is great and it's a great design on paper. In reality it's inconsistent, repetitive and feels really bad. Not really worth your time when there are better examples of similar games on the market instead.
A very annoying game. First of all, the game doesn't distinguish between controller or keyboard/mouse play, meaning regardless of which you choose to use, both control types are shown on screen, which can be confusing when learning the game. Secondly, the game is very slow to respond to inputs. Menu prompts take several seconds to be "acknowledged", making you think game did not receive input. This is esp, annoying as every menu takes seconds to load and you have to sit through the pause every single game. The gameplay itself is silly hard. It's basically bullet hell in an old west theme, which wouldn't be a bad thing if it had tight controllers. It honestly feels like you are playing in syrup or something is holding your computer back, when you have 100x more the recommend requirements. Lastly, the game bugs out with Steam overlay.

A Fistful of Gun, developed by FarmerGnome and published by Devolver Digital, is a frenetic top-down shooter that plunges players into a stylized Wild West setting brimming with chaotic gunfights and strategic combat. Since its release in 2015, the game has stood out for its unique approach to the shooter genre, combining pixel-art aesthetics with a roster of diverse characters, each offering distinct weapons and playstyles. This variety invites players to experiment and adapt their tactics, making each run feel fresh despite the game’s arcade-like repetition. At its heart, the game tells the story of Clayton Boon, a ruthless railroad magnate who has struck a sinister pact with the Devil. Players step into the boots of one of eleven different gunslingers, all vying to stop Boon’s destructive plans within a twelve-day timeframe. This narrative unfolds across a series of arena-style battles where players face off against waves of enemies in destructible environments. These arenas feature a range of obstacles and tactical considerations, requiring players to use cover wisely while managing the onslaught of foes. The randomized nature of each battle ensures that no two encounters are the same, adding a significant layer of replayability. One of the most compelling aspects of A Fistful of Gun is its diverse cast of characters, each with a unique weapon and control mechanics that significantly alter gameplay. For example, Two Feathers wields a bow and doesn’t need to reload but is limited to firing in four cardinal directions, forcing players to think carefully about positioning. Conversely, Dutch throws knives that can be aimed in any direction, but with a limited range and the need for regular reloads. This differentiation means that mastering the game often involves learning the nuances of each gunslinger, providing depth and encouraging players to find a character that aligns with their preferred combat style. Visually, the game adopts a retro pixel art style with a sepia-toned palette that effectively captures the gritty, dusty atmosphere of the Old West. While the aesthetic is charming and fitting, the muted color scheme can sometimes make it difficult to distinguish enemies from the environment, especially during fast-paced firefights where clarity is crucial. Despite this, the detailed backgrounds and character designs contribute to the game’s immersive world, and the destructible terrain adds dynamic elements that influence how players navigate and fight within each map. Sound design in A Fistful of Gun plays a key role in building the Western ambiance. The soundtrack, composed by Surasshu, features energetic and thematic tracks that heighten the tension of gun battles and keep players engaged. Gunshots, explosions, and other effects are punchy and impactful, complementing the on-screen action effectively. However, the music loops fairly quickly, and the limited variety can lead to repetition over longer play sessions, which some players might find detracts from the overall experience. Gameplay-wise, A Fistful of Gun supports both single-player and multiplayer modes, including local and online co-op. The single-player mode challenges players to progress through increasingly difficult levels in a story-driven campaign, while arcade modes focus on high-score runs and survival. The multiplayer aspect shines when teaming up with friends to tackle the chaotic battles together, enhancing the fun and strategic possibilities. That said, some players have reported connectivity issues and matchmaking problems online, which can detract from the cooperative experience. While A Fistful of Gun offers a refreshing and engaging take on top-down shooters with its varied characters and Wild West theme, it is not without flaws. The gameplay can feel repetitive over time, with waves of enemies becoming predictable despite the randomized level design. Difficulty spikes may frustrate newcomers, especially since the game demands quick reflexes and strategic thinking without much hand-holding. Additionally, some technical issues, including occasional bugs and performance hiccups, have been reported by the community. In conclusion, A Fistful of Gun delivers a distinctive blend of fast-paced action and tactical depth wrapped in a nostalgic Western aesthetic. Its diverse character roster and destructible environments provide plenty of variety and strategic options, making it an appealing choice for players who enjoy chaotic shooters and cooperative play. However, repetition, difficulty spikes, and technical shortcomings might limit its appeal for those seeking a more polished or accessible experience. For fans of challenging, retro-inspired action games with a Western twist, A Fistful of Gun remains a memorable and worthwhile title to explore. Rating: 5/10
