TLDR: Buy this game. It's easily my Arcade game of the year, awesome soundtrack, and a super tight loop. If you have someone to couch co-op with, consider it on Switch so you can easily break out a pair of controllers. This was by far my favourite Season 1 game on the Playdate. I couldn't get very far though, the console was so small that my hands would cramp way too easy. I've considered 3D printing some kind of grip to help make it more comfortable to play for more than 15 minutes at a time, but never got around to it (I don't even own a printer so??). I felt this game deserved so much better than being stuck on the Playdate, but I never would've imagined they'd actually bring it to other platforms. I bought it on both platforms since my initial experience with the tiny yellow machine was so good and I just wanted to throw money at these devs. What I did not expect was for the Nintendo and Steam versions of the game to have different leaderboards, so as I played I made sure to check all 4 game modes on each platform and keep besting my scores. At the time of writing this review, I hold 1st place on all 8 boards, and intend to keep raising those world records. The game makes it easy to grind with 5 BGMs, tons of colour palettes to unlock, and plenty of achievements, none of which feel forced or bad. This game is absolutely 5/5, 10/10, whatever you prefer. I couldn't recommend it more. I sent a screenshot of one of my nuts scores at the devs, and they replied + retweeted it. This game's high level of re-play ability combined with such an absurdly low price tag puts it in an amazing spot. Whether it's on Steam or on Switch, buy this game. A fantastic port of the best Playdate game. One of my favorite games of 2022. Perfect arcade action.
The game looked simple at first, but enemies become harder and harder the longer you play, keeping you engaged the whole time. After losing a game, you always want to start a new one and do better. Really fun game. Recommended.
HYPER METEOR is a simple but fun adaptation of Asteroids, an endless arcade game where you're to survive and score points by ramming into meteors and enemies. You have to aim for their weak spots or you crash your ship. Stay on the attack to grow your hit chain. Nice little addictive score chaser with an in-game online leaderboard.
I went to try this out for five minutes and half an hour went by, what the hell
A delightfully frantic twist on an arcade classic, HYPER METEOR makes ramming space junk so much fun.
At some point, Hyper Meteor, the binary, colour based, kind of Asteroids inspired shooter where you didn’t shoot previously exclusive to the Playdate handheld got ported to PC, and I picked it up in a semi recent sale. Whilst I appreciated the design of the game when I played it as part of Playdate's Season 1, I always struggled with the control scheme because I found that using the crank to choose your direction of boost never felt particularly comfortable. It was serviceable, but not quite as precise as I wanted for a high score game like this. Fast forward to its big screen release, and suddenly it all makes way more sense. You’ve got direct directional control with the analogue stick, then you boost forwards, Asteroids style, using a face button. That’s it. Easy peasy. It’s still essentially a two tone game, seeing as the mission is always to collide with the weak points of enemies that are light in colour whilst avoiding parts that are dark, but there’s now a suite of palette unlockables, expanded game modes, and just some general tweaks that make a game designed for a tiny black and white screen still make sense on a 60 inch TV. This port has elevated a game I didn’t mind on Playdate to a game I *really* like on the Steam Deck, playing either handheld or blown up. There’s still not a massive precedent for Playdate games being brought to other machines - I can think of a few smaller titles I’ve seen appear either on Steam or on other digital store fronts like the eShop - but Hyper Meteor shows that certain games that perhaps didn’t quite ‘hit’ on Playdate due to feeling a little restricted by hardware, may excel when afforded the space of a modern port.
ill be honest i generally dont really bother much with arcade-y type games much because my adhd prevents the "just one more go" vibe from really happening due to the typical difficulty level and rapid game overs of such things...but man this one really just hits the spot real well. it controls super well, it feels satisfying to get the hang of, its got very fair ramping difficulty, every death genuinely feels like my fault for not paying attention, and its so satisfying to reach new heights with it. basically the usual talk for arcade-esque games but genuine this time, in my humble opinion. absolutely worth scooping up. use a controller.
Hyper Meteor isn't just cute; it is a finely-crafted and well-balanced arcade experience.
