First impression: cute casual puzzle game This is a sliding puzzle: there's a single hole on the hexagonally tiled board, and you can move pieces into it to move the hole and eventually get Little Red Riding Hood to grandma's house. Bonus if you can do it within the alotted number of moves, but it's not necessary. This gets challenging when you learn that you also have to pick flowers (and a berry bush for bonus), there are immovable obstacles, there are bears (who can be moved) that the girl needs to stay away from, fire that the bears can't come close to, and more -- you get the idea. The game is quite well designed, and that applies both to the artwork, the interface, the available settings, and even the tutorial. It is simply enjoyable to play. I have logged 1 hour playing the first 16 of 60 levels, and it's fun shoving the bears hither and yonder to get the red girl to where she needs to go and not waste moves. I expect it would take beginners longer, especially if they want to catch all the stars, but you don't have to: I expect this game is quite accessible to kids (who are more likely to play it on a tablet, though). Update: on level 17 and 18, difficulty gets to medium to 3-star them. Recommended. It runs on my old Windows XP computer, but not quickly.
A Day in the Woods is a delightful blend of strategy, fairy tale nostalgia, and handcrafted charm. Developed by RetroEpic Software, this sliding puzzle game reimagines the story of Little Red Riding Hood in a way that's both brain-teasing and heartwarming. The core mechanic is simple yet clever: you play as a forest sprite helping Red navigate hexagonal tiles to reach her grandmother’s house. Each level is a miniature puzzle, where you swap tiles—trees, rivers, wolves, bears, and helpful friends—to carve a safe path for Red. You’re graded on how efficiently you solve each level, with bonuses for completing it in the fewest moves possible. It’s classic slide-puzzle logic, but layered with tactical thinking. For example, bears will block paths, wolves pose a danger, and characters like the woodsman or woodcutter can clear threats if positioned wisely. New mechanics are introduced gradually, keeping things fresh without overwhelming the player. What sets A Day in the Woods apart is its handcrafted art style. The entire game looks like a wooden tabletop diorama—figures, trees, and terrain all resemble hand-carved, painted toys. It’s a charming aesthetic that immediately stands out in a genre often dominated by sterile grids or minimalist designs. The gentle acoustic soundtrack and simple sound effects enhance the cozy, storybook feel. It’s relaxing, but also mentally stimulating—a rare combo that makes it ideal for unwinding while still keeping your brain engaged. Highlights: -Unique Visuals: The wooden diorama style is warm, nostalgic, and visually distinct. -Satisfying Puzzles: Each level feels like a small, well-designed logic problem. -Steady Difficulty Curve: The game teaches new mechanics thoughtfully, avoiding frustration while still offering challenge. -Short & Sweet: With around 60 levels, it’s a manageable length that doesn’t overstay its welcome. Drawbacks: -Repetitiveness: The core mechanic doesn't evolve dramatically after the first few dozen levels, which might wear thin for some players. -No Undo Button: Making a mistake can be frustrating, especially on later levels where one wrong move forces a restart. -Basic Storytelling: While the fairy tale framing is cute, don’t expect a deep narrative—this is a puzzle-first experience. A Day in the Woods is a lovingly crafted puzzle game that feels like playing with a handcrafted board game come to life. Its relaxing pace, clever design, and unique visuals make it a standout for puzzle fans or anyone looking for a peaceful, low-stress gaming experience. It may not be revolutionary, but it’s utterly charming from start to finish. Rating: 7/10
Великолепная игра!!!!!
Putzig gemachtes Schiebe-Puzzle! Sehr schönes Spielfeld. :) Tolle Aktionen! (Honigtopf, Holzfäller usw.) Humorvoll.
It's a cute game to look at and play. The play is super easy to pick up but the added perfectionist challenges make it a long process to complete. It has a nice balance of simple to start and depth to come back to. The nursery rhyme story telling in it is also a nice touch. It's a simple puzzler that could be enjoyed by a huge range of ages so worth getting for a parent/ kid playing experience.
Просто хорошая игра, мне понравилась. Задача Красной Шапочкой дойти с пирожками до бабушки, но все не так просто на пути встретятся опасности.
A Day in the Woods is a puzzle game where you guide Little Red Riding Hood through a set of increasingly complex slider puzzles to find Grandma's cottage. The game has 60 levels. In each level, you guide Red to a cottage, picking berries and flowers and avoiding dangerous creatures along the way. The levels start off simple and add more complex obstacles as they progress. To finish each level and go to the next, you just have to get Red to the cottage safely and pick all the flowers along the way. This was almost always easy to figure out, although the most obvious solutions usually take a lot of moves. If you want to get all 3 stars for a level, you have to also pick all the berries and finish the level at or below a maximum number of moves. These could be very difficult, even in some of the early levels. I'd often get within a move of two of the target and have to spend a lot of time figuring out how I could possibly shave off that last couple of steps. Once you finish each level once, you also unlock the ability to crown the levels by finishing them in the smallest possible number of moves, which adds an even higher layer of challenge. A Day in the Woods is a great choice for a difficult puzzle game with a cute aesthetic. The game lets you move through the levels quickly, so you never feel stuck, but going back and getting all the stars and crowns provides a nice challenge. It also has the benefit of being pretty inexpensive. 8/10
To Dear Readers, "A Day in the Woods" is one of my first few computer games that I have ever played serveral years ago. Since my old computer died, this game was lost along with it. I am so excited to find this back on Steam! I don't know whether I would be qualified to receive the reward from previously owning the game, but even I am not able to receive anything, I still would 100% recommend this game to any one who enjoys cute graphic, lovely music, enjoyable puzzle and relaxing atmosphere. I can't wait to jump back into my advanture in the woods again like I was years ago. ^_^ How about you come join me, let's get in the woods! To Dear Developers, Thank you so much for making this little game allive again! I appreciate it very much that this little previous one come back to live and will be introduced to the whole gaming world again! Look forward to your new development in the future too! Thanks again, have a wonderful blessed day! ^v^
Beautiful puzzle game with some fun stuff to unlock like seasonal backgrounds and sprite customizations. Completing a level may not seem too difficult until you try for those 3 star ratings. A nice challenge and fun to play. I got this one on sale but it's definitely worth the regular price of $4.99.
