A bare bones generic RTS that truly lives up to the CnC legacy...unfortunately. As a mature, reasonable adult, I'm able to appreciate that Command and Conquer, which I do love, is dated. That shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone, so I don't know why Petroglyph, which is made of ex-Westwood alumni, would just do what got them shut down and re- re- re- re- remake the one game that they'd been making for years... Simplistic designs choices, not just visually but mechanically, mean I don't feel engaged. I just spam troops and send them forward. The closest thing to strategy is to judge how big of a unit blob I need and what it should be made of for my opposition. Then I can just sit back and spam superweapons when the trite economic system falls apart into just sitting around waiting for my haulers to come back with the goods. Further, I really hate the "multiverse" mechanic they've got going on here with their other "8-Bit" titles. I say that because while it COULD be cool it just isn't. Petro wasn't up to the challenge of making two whole factions on launch, I promise you that they didn't suddenly get the balance right now that there are six available in multiplayer spread across the Fantasy and Sci-Fi genres. Westwood, I'm not sorry to say, deserved to get shut down. Don't believe me? Play Emperor: Battle for Dune and tell me that was where they needed to be at in the industry. Hate EA all you want and I'll agree, but they made the right call shutting them down, because all Westwood did was just make Command and Conquer over and over again and here we are, with a "2016" game that's just bare bones basic CnC...again.

Every market we collect.
For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 25 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 10 places towards #1, and the 2,413 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. One store, one chart, one country — it is the only place we have enough observations to say even that.
Prices outside the United States have been collected since 6 August 2026 and chart positions since 19 July 2026, so a cut older than that has no market to compare and a market that joined later has no history yet. Nothing here is converted between currencies.

I have been trying to get my son into RTS games so we could play together, as I loved playing C&C, Red Alert, and AoE2 (and others) when I was a kid. To him though, those games are unappealing and too old. The new strategy games are generally very complex, clearly targeting a more mature audience. I couldn't figure out how to get him into the genre. 8-bit armies was the bridge. Its a modern feel and art style, and I was able to jump right in as the controls and gameplay are almost exactly the same as the old Red Alert and C&C games. The game itself is simple: one resource to collect, and two sides with your standard unit types to create. There are some good updates from the older Westwood games to the gameplay, and the game itself feels much faster. Its not going to appeal to people who are looking for deep nuance and original gameplay. It will appeal to people like me, or people just getting into RTS, trying to learn the basic idea of play. I really appreciate this game being made, I love it, and love playing it with my son and getting to re-live my own childhood from the other end.
Unoriginal art style that almost suits the gameplay, which is to say they're both pretty simple.
Disclaimer
I finished regular campaign on normal. It seems DLC is basically the same game just with different units.
TL;DR
Basic doesn't feel the right word. It's so basic that it's unremarkable. Only worth it on a steep sale if you don't mind playing missions that feel one step above skirmish, but not like actual proper campaign. Will take about 10h to finish it all on normal.
Description
Classic RTS, has a bit of a C&C feel. 1 faction only. Classic military units. Resources are gathered from oil drills (neutral indestructible buildings) and transported to refinery which turns it to cash. You can expand building range by placing any building close to the current area edge. You can increase production speed for units by building more production facilities for that unit. It also works for the game's superweapon - the nuke. More silos - faster nuke cooldown. Campaign is a linear sequence of missions with 1 main objective and 2 additional objectives you can finish if you play on a normal or hard difficulty. Each objective completed on any mission gives you unlocks. Either ability to train new units, or some more starting units/cash. You can also repeat any past mission. It means you can return to a mission later after you unlock some new stuff in further missions, and finish bonus objectives with more starting stuff and more available units to train. Maps may contain crates with cash or units, crates can only be picked up by infantry. Units Infantry: - gunner, low range, uses grenades against buildings - rocket guys - engineer - repairs other units (including infantry, surprisingly) - commando - cannot be trained, can only be unlocked for your starting force and found in crates, it has a sniper rifle and grenades Ground: - truck - for trucking resources - armored car - machineguns can fire at air - tank - it's a tank, it tanks - artillery - longer range and aoe but projectiles move slower - heavy tank - has bigger gun and rockets to fire at air Air: - transport - it transports units - mg helicopter - good vs infantry - rocket helicopter - good vs vehicles
Pros:
+ Responsive Units do what you order them to do. + Pathfinding Not as good as in StarCraft 2, but hell... it's quite fine.
Cons:
- Missions Honestly, scenarios you have to play are very basic while also finding a way to be annoying, especially since the bonus objective always requires you to complete the map in a time limit. Sometimes this time limit is reasonable, other time it feel very UN-reasonable. Missions have no triggers or story events or anything it's just a set enemy base that produces units to kill you and you have an objective to do. Last mission takes the cake, where you need to protect all buildings of 2 dumb AI and one of the enemy AIs is constantly sending air drops to his base and he doesn't even bother to repair his ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ♥♥♥♥! - Building leapfrogging You can only build 1 structure at a time, including defensive structures, and you cannot expand your build range in any way other than doing a Kongo line towards the next available resource node. C&C has MCVs and resource fields are large. Here each oil drill is important but one drill doesn't increase income by vast amounts, but you need to commit a lot of time to get to it by building a line of structures towards it. It feels... all wrong. Even Red Alert 3 had a better system with the unit that you can set up to construct within it's limit. - Superbasic No interesting units, no real tactical challenge, simple graphics. - Nukes Holy fk are the enemy nukes annoying! You barely get like 2s alarm and it just drops and often times - AI aims it at your unit group. It instantly kills all units except trucks (for some ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ reason, maybe even devs realized it would be endlessly annoying to have to replace them) and damages like half HP of all buildings. Some units don't even have the speed to leave the area of effect before it lands, which is absolutely retarded design. You can send it anywhere, not even requiring line of sight or any unit to send it. It's dumb, it sucks, I hate it, ♥♥♥♥ it.
Lowdown
It's not offensive to me, but also barely anything worth playing. I'd give 8-bit Armies a:
4/10
On a deep discount it may be mildly worth playing.
8 bits. I love 8 bits. 8. wait. 8.... I ate. a lot. I ate my feelings into my soul and now I'm an empty casket of lust and decrepit loneliness waiting to be swallowed by a 7 foot goth latina vampire. May Allah bless me. Netanyahu please save us.
Too basic.
Fun game, buy on sale. Really satisfying with a lot of missions. Story is quite lacking though but it is what it is.
Sunucular çok kötü oyunun ortasında sürekli oyundan atıyordu herkesi. Bunun dışında ordunun yapay zekası da kötü sen saldırı emri verince tıkladığın birimi veya binayı yıkınca duruyorlar saldırmayı tamamen kesiyorlar. Bu iki sorun olmasa güzel oyun.
6/10 - Very bland. There is no reason to play this instead of C&C.
