Modeled estimate, not a reported figure. How we estimate →
Every price cut of more than 20% we have observed, in each market that quoted one, with this game's chart position on either side of it. These are episodes, not a model: a sale is one event, and one event cannot tell you what the next one will do.
Reviews, worldwide (the counter carries no country): 0.13/day in the week to Aug 3 → 0.29/day in the week after.
For scale, across Steam · Top Sellers · Brazil over the last 30 days: the 26 chart moves that followed a price cut of more than 20% went a median of 7 places towards #1, and the 2,400 moves with no price cut behind them went 2 away. One store, one chart, one country — it is the only place we have enough observations to say even that.
Prices outside the United States have been collected since 6 August 2026 and chart positions since 19 July 2026, so a cut older than that has no market to compare and a market that joined later has no history yet. Nothing here is converted between currencies.
About
1998: The Toll Keeper Story is a narrative simulation about survival, motherhood, and moral weight during a nation’s collapse, inspired by one of the darkest chapters of Indonesia's history.
You play as Dewi, a pregnant woman working as a toll keeper, caught in the middle of growing civil unrest and financial turmoil in the fictional Southeast Asian country of Janapa. The nation is crumbling—protests erupt, prices skyrocket, and trust in authority fades. Every shift, you inspect vehicles, verify documents, and decide who gets to pass—all while trying to stay safe, keep your job, and protect your unborn child.
You’re not a hero or a fighter—just a regular human being trying to endure overwhelming hardship. But even your smallest decisions carry consequences. Will you follow every rule, or look the other way when someone begs for help? Can you stay strong through fear, uncertainty, and pressure?
Features:
A Story of Survival and Motherhood: Make difficult choices not just for your safety, but also for your unborn child.
Narrative Simulation Gameplay: Check vehicles, documents, and identities while managing rising tension and limited resources.
Small Decisions, Heavy Consequences: Every action matters: who you let through, who you turn away, what rules you follow or bend.
Distinct 90s-Inspired Visual Style: Fusing dot textures, old-paper aesthetics, and a blueish filter, the art direction echoes printed materials from the 90s—grounding the game in the mood and texture of its era.
Inspired by True Events: This game is set during the 1998 Asian financial crisis, with Indonesia’s situation serving as one of the primary inspirations. Set in a fictional Southeast Asian country, it explores the fear, chaos, and uncertainty of the era, challenging you to navigate through moral dilemmas where survival demands difficult sacrifices.

Not a very long game but very good story. solid 8.5/10

Eu amo jogo narrativo. É uma mecanica super simples mas a história e o impacto das suas escolhas e tentativa de sobrevivência torna tudo muito bom. não dá pra ajudar todo mundo sempre, porque você tem um bebÊ pra cuidar. Mas há vários caminhos para seguir...
This is a very interesting premise for a game and I am enjoying the characters, story, and branching pathways. I think the game itself is a bit of a chore to get through, because there's way too many rules for checking things and the game is very vague about what to do with certain things. There's too much to keep track of and the game punishes you overly much for even the slightest mistake. It's not as harsh a curve as Papers, Please, but it's not that far off that curve either. Still, I recommend it more than not.
Poor description in daily objectives. How many flyer to hand out per day? and not to mention the contraband list. The game has potential but it look a bit rush and poorly written. Have high expectation for this since it gets positive review.
cerita nya bagus, game nya simple
1998: the toll Keeper Story is a beautiful game. While the devs surely don't have many resources to create their works of fiction, this doesn't stop this game from being a wonderful gem made with passion. The gameplay is simple, but it works, and gets more complex as time goes on. Graphics and sound are also fairly simple, but they do manage to create a wonderful atmosphere (I also liked the cutscenes they were able to put in the game). But what makes this game special is its story: the playtime is short (5 hours), but the developers managed to create a desperate, but also credible world. The characters will stay with you, and trying to do your best for Dewi and her family will push you to get to the credits of the game. I recommend it to people who enjoy a good narrative with some historical context. I also think that people who played and enjoyed papers please will like this game, since they clearly took inspiration from papers please (you will understand what I mean when you will see the gameplay and the context of the game).
