Buggy with meh humor and ugly/annoying main playable characters. But it is slightly fun at times and the story is interesting. Finished it though i would recommend "stick it to the man" since its a better title from the Devs. Also the game left me with a slight headache at the end >~>
Zombie Vikings, developed and published by Zoink Games, is a side-scrolling cooperative beat ’em up that blends slapstick humor, colorful hand-drawn art, and Norse mythology into an unapologetically bizarre adventure. The story begins with Odin losing his magical eye, which is promptly stolen by Loki. To retrieve it, Odin resurrects four long-dead warriors—Gunborg, Seagurd, Hedgy, and Caw-Kaa—each with their own peculiar personalities and comedic quirks. From there, the group embarks on a chaotic journey across the realms, battling strange creatures, undead foes, and absurd bosses in a world that never takes itself too seriously. The game’s irreverent tone sets it apart immediately; it’s filled with sharp, sarcastic writing and ridiculous scenarios that feel more like a Nordic cartoon fever dream than a traditional mythological epic. At its core, Zombie Vikings is a modern homage to the cooperative beat ’em ups of the 1990s, such as Golden Axe or Castle Crashers. The gameplay revolves around straightforward combat mechanics—light and heavy attacks, blocks, and special abilities—combined with limited character customization through weapons and runes that enhance specific attributes. Each of the four undead heroes has unique moves and attack styles, encouraging players to experiment with combinations, especially in cooperative play. The game supports up to four players locally or online, and this is where it truly comes alive. With a full team, the chaos of hacking through hordes of enemies becomes fast-paced and hilariously unpredictable. Players can even perform “Viking stitches,” a cooperative mechanic that allows them to combine characters into a single grotesque super-warrior to unleash more powerful attacks. This feature, along with the game’s zany humor, reinforces its emphasis on teamwork and comedic absurdity. Visually, Zombie Vikings is a standout. Zoink Games’ signature art style, known from their earlier work Stick It to the Man!, returns here in full force. The game’s environments are drenched in vibrant colors and exaggerated designs that look like they were pulled straight from a darkly comic storybook. Every level bursts with personality, from the candy-colored swamps and skeletal villages to the surreal landscapes inspired by Norse mythology. The animation is expressive and fluid, and the quirky character designs add to the sense of charm. The soundtrack complements the tone well, mixing whimsical melodies with grittier battle themes. Even the voice acting enhances the experience, with exaggerated performances that perfectly match the over-the-top dialogue and offbeat narrative. The game’s humor can be hit or miss depending on one’s taste—it leans heavily into juvenile and absurd jokes—but it undeniably gives the game its distinctive identity. However, the gameplay’s simplicity is both a strength and a weakness. The basic combat mechanics are accessible and satisfying in short bursts, but the repetition becomes noticeable as the game progresses. Most levels follow a predictable rhythm of fighting waves of enemies, collecting loot, and moving to the next area with minimal variation in structure. While the cooperative play mitigates this somewhat by adding the chaos of multiple players, solo players may find the experience less engaging. The enemy variety is limited, and the difficulty balance can feel uneven, particularly in single-player mode, where some encounters drag on longer than necessary. The combat lacks the depth and precision of more polished beat ’em ups, relying instead on button-mashing and spectacle. Despite these issues, the game does introduce occasional creative moments—unique boss fights, humorous set pieces, and clever use of Viking lore—that keep the momentum going. The game’s progression system offers modest customization through collectible weapons and runes that modify abilities and stats. While this adds a small layer of strategy, it doesn’t significantly alter the gameplay loop. The focus remains firmly on cooperative fun rather than individual mastery. This design choice reinforces the developers’ intent: Zombie Vikings is meant to be a shared experience, a comedic romp best enjoyed with friends rather than a solitary campaign. The inclusion of versus arenas allows for some lighthearted competition, though these segments are more novelty than fully realized modes. For those who appreciate a casual brawler where the entertainment comes as much from player interaction as from the game itself, the design works as intended. But players seeking deeper mechanics or a more substantial single-player journey may find the experience lacking once the initial novelty wears off. Despite its flaws, Zombie Vikings succeeds through personality and creative spirit. Zoink Games has crafted a world that is as grotesque as it is charming, and their commitment to style and humor gives the game an unmistakable character. It’s not a masterpiece of design, but it never tries to be—it’s a gleefully messy, often hilarious cooperative adventure that thrives on camaraderie and absurdity. The combination of vibrant art, ridiculous storytelling, and simple yet enjoyable combat makes it an excellent choice for players looking to unwind with friends in a humorous, fast-paced setting. When played as intended, with a group of players laughing and shouting through chaotic battles, it captures the joy of old-school couch co-op gaming. For fans of Zoink’s previous works or those seeking a quirky, offbeat brawler with personality to spare, Zombie Vikings delivers a memorable, if imperfect, ride through the afterlife of Norse legend.
