The concept is a unique one, and it drew me in. However there is barely any game here. There are attempts to flesh out the game with unlockables and parts for the cars; but the races are extremely dull and unsatisfying. The sound design is almost non-existent, and the handling and controls are clunky. Definitely not worth £6.99 in its current state.
Space Ribbon is good fun for short bursts of time. The visuals and soundtrack are fantastic, while the sound effects aren't so strong. I love the attention to detail, the cars are especially cool. The graphics remind me Beetle Adventure Racing meets BLUR. The game plays fairly well, the handling is pretty tight. When I hit the side of the ribbon road, I expected to fall off, Mario Kart style. But it just bounces me back into the linear road. It would be great if there was some alternate paths to take or some power ups or something in terms of content while actually racing. In my experience of the game, it's pretty easy to win every race. The challenge comes really late into play time. All that being said, this is absolutely worth the Early Access price tag of £9.99 (£6.59 on sale) Grab it now, put up with it not being perfect and enjoy the finished game.
In it's current state, this game isn't worth $10, $2.50, or even more than an hour of your time. It has tons of potential, but if you have your eye on it I'd recommend waiting until it is out of early access.
Pros
+ Decent soundtrack + Good visuals, even if the cars look somewhat out of place + Randomized tracks
Cons
- Gets old fast/little replayability - Car handling is bad - Bugs - Gross UI - Stock sound effects - Generally lame and generic power-ups
Conclusion
Don't get this game yet. It has lots of potential and is a neat concept, but isn't fun in its current state.
In it's current state you get an amusingly crazy gameworld combined with minimalistic gameplay and controls from outer space... not the cool outer space more the really dark one. The keyboard layout is made in a way, that must be fun at parties. Especially if you're not using a US-Keyboard and the acceleration key (z) is switching it's place with the y, while the other keys with meaning in the game (x,c,v,b and the left and right arrow keys) stay where they are. But even when you take a look into the options to find that out, there is something really odd going on with your gas pedal when you keep pushing z to accelerate. Sometimes your car makes a good sprint, sometimes you have the feeling as if you would try to accelerate in a much to high gear (so basically not much happens). That's especially a funny feeling because... there are no gears in this racing game. Not that you would need them. It's a happy arcade game and shifting gears would be a bit odd given the scenario. But it just feels like if there would be something there. To make a long story short: Might be fun at a really crazy party and / or multiplayer... it's a mood thing for sure. But at it's current state it's pricetag would be much more reasonable at 1.29 than at 9.99. And I wouldn't be looking at the game with much humour if 1.29 wouldn't be by a 'weird coincidence' just what I payed for it at the humble store during the current sale.
You chase a Space Panda or Tiger on a track it spews out in space using various space cars. It's like a David Bowie fever dream, kinda. It's an experience eitherway. Cars look pretty cool, and go through an evolution of upgrades, and the Space Beasts are both fantastic and a little creepy. Driving can get kinda clunky though, feels like there's a lot of resistance to turn around and go the other way but, on spinouts it's rather hard to get the car facing the right way. Power-ups would be nice though. Maybe run it through some tests to liven things up, races at the moment just feel a little straightforward, there's little agency other than slipstreaming but nothing to combat when someone gets too far ahead other than they can end the race. Colour me impressed but don't "panda" to me by adding a Snow Leopard skin for the Tiger, or do, actually I'd really like that. Eitherway the potential for greatness is there, it's just a case of realising it, and I'd suggest things here and there but, I'll keep an eye out for a full release.
There’s a fine line between a decent racing game and a good racing game. Yet, it seems like you’ve gotta go out of your way to make a racing game a pain to play. When the fundamentals of racing, even from an arcade standpoint, don’t seem to be present along with a variety of other issues, it starts seeming like it was intentionally designed to be a disappointment.
Start with the good?
There are a few bits of Space Ribbon that I thought weren’t too bad. The track design and general aesthetic were solid. The track sort of unfolds in front of you in most races and the way it twists and turns reminds me very much of Mario Kart’s Rainbow Road. The atmosphere of the game lends itself to the somewhat silly design as well as the the giant floating heads that are creating the track. It works well to guide the player into the general nature of the game. Aside from that, the car design, from what I managed to get to, was at least mildly interesting although not really unique in any way. It had a moderate variety with selectable color schemes and modifications.
Welp, that’s it
Space Ribbon is a mess. It’s hardly even a racing game. The goal in most races is to chase down the track-creating giant head before anyone else. The first problem here comes in the fact that you can’t really go faster in any way outside of “drafting” behind your opponents, so if you’re in front, you’re just waiting for someone to draft boost from behind and overtake you to draft again. Then it’s just a matter of who got the most boosts to catch up to the end of the track the quickest. All the while you’re listening to a horrible engine sound buzzing away like a tuned down school fire alarm. It’s as bad or worse than any game's car engine sound I can remember. I’m not sure why there weren't at least some stock sounds or something that could have been used in its place. Another area of failure is that the vehicle physics all over the place. Most of the time you’re practically glued to the track, but if you get a tiny bit of boost from drafting and go over a hill, you’re launched into the air with virtually no control and only the hope that you can land on the track. If you get bumped too much or hit a wall, it’s a dice roll as to whether you’re instantly stopped, turned completely around, or just bounce off harmlessly. This would be less of an issue if the game had any sort of normal breaking system, but instead it just has a handbrake that, when pressed, sends you careening off in whatever direction you were turned whether you were accelerating or not. It feels much more like an “auto drift” button. The only way to slow with any reason is to lift off the accelerator and that’s about as effective as you’d figure. I assumed that the combat aspect would perhaps provide some level of redemption, but using the tiny handful of weapons and abilities is somehow even more than generic. Generic implementations of things like missile, shield, and so on at least have increased functionality with things like additional pickups, but Space Ribbon gives you nothing more, A pickup gives you just a few shots of missile, a shield, or a sort of “ghost” mode that makes you not impact vehicles or get hit by weapons. It didn’t really add much and the game still centers around draft boosting to do anything other than hear the endless drone of the engine.
It’s over…
I’m kind of ashamed I bought this. If it wasn’t something I picked up for literal pennies in a random selection of ten games I bought based solely on their trailers and screenshots, I’d never have touched it. I can find some solace in knowing that I can warn people to avoid this game and save yourself time and god forbid, actual money. Hopefully I can find (or just go play some already owned) arcade racers that are fun and don’t make me feel sorry for the bytes of hard drive space that had to represent them, even if only temporarily. Great game, just the fact that it has local multiplayer and linux support make me recommend it. However it is early access, and with that comes the fact that it's unfinished and has bugs. It's very nice to see that it is being actively developed on too.
Oh boy, bad controls, weird gameplay and... you don't wanna know.
