About

Brilliant, burnt-out, possibly cursed – you play as operant Hershel Wilk, alias CASCADE. Five years ago you led your team into the abyss and have been haunted by your failures ever since. Now you've been recalled for a mysterious assignment that may give you a chance to prove yourself again.

Uncover secrets hidden in the lost corners of the city and within your own mind. Navigate a murky world of potential informants and adversaries. Pass skill checks to uncover their true motivations through subterfuge, violence, or deduction. As an operant, there are multiple ways to approach every problem - your choices and methods will be your own, and so will the consequences.

Find yourself thrown into a three-way struggle for cultural and ideological power, played out across an unforgettable city. You'll go up against international bankers, foreign techno-fascists, psychic doppelgängers, a paranoid TV presenter, a man with a box for a heart, and dozens more. Everyone you meet has their own agendas, beliefs, and secrets for you to uncover and turn to your own ends. In ZERO PARADES, even the world itself is a character with its own secrets, traumas, and miracles for you to discover.

Operants subject themselves to years of psychological training to hone their minds into their greatest weapons. Do you favor animal-like reflexes, a philosophical approach, or a different cover story for every occasion? Through Conditioning, you'll turn the deepest aspects of Hershel's identity into potent abilities and unlock new paths forward. You can even change the rules of the game itself.

Pressures simulate the physical and psychological toll of being in-theatre. Exertion pushes dice rolls in your favour – just remember that you’re gambling with your life. Keep your Fatigue, Anxiety, and Delirium in check or deal with the long-term repercussions.

In this line of work you're going to fail way more often than you succeed. That much is expected of you. What matters is how you pick yourself back up. If the dice don't go your way (and they won't) you'll have to improvise and hope the consequences are ones you can live with.
Sums Steam only; GOG, Epic publish no volume signal, so the true total is higher by an unknown amount.

Just fantastic
I wish we lived in the reality were I can wholeheartedly praise the game for what it is, but sadly the reality situation is such that it will be forever muddied by its relationship to its predecessor and the baggage/drama that comes with it. I will chalk all that up to "capitalism ruins everything, as always" and move on. The pros: -the world is well fleshed out and never fails to make you yearn to learn more about it -the art style is beautiful, plenty of eye candy on display -the story is captivating enough for the spy genera -many mechanics that felt gamey in Disco, fit logically into this world (like clothing based modifiers and thought conditioning) You are expected to change your clothes and act in certain ways, and they offer you many QoL features to do that. The cons: -dialogue falls short on many occasions, either because its boring or the delivery is not very good. I found the main characters voice to be quite grating at the beginning but it eventually grew on me, I can't imagine her with any other voice at this point -while politics exists in the game and is a central element to the story, I cant help but feel that nothing is really being "said" about any of it, don't expect the kind of political exploration that Disco offers -few annoying bugs (including an entire side quest being unfinishable, but I believe these have been fixed since) All in all, I enjoyed my time with it. The opera never tires.

A good RPG. An unworthy successor to Disco Elysium
"ZERO PARADES: For Dead Spies" is a good RPG on its own. I am aware of the ZA/UM controversy, so the store introduction as 'From the creators of Disco Elysium comes ZERO PARADES' is a half-truth. The core writers are absent, so this is a shameless marketing ploy. The first hours were slow and dull. The city was hard to navigate, the path was unclear and the checks were difficult. Some indoor locations are easy to miss, unless you resort to pixel-hunting on each screen. Then comes the killer combo: An early LOREDUMP worthy of Esoteric Ebb, delivered by a very questionable choice of narrator —a sheep on antidepressants with the most monotone voice you can fathom. Resistance is futile, you'll want turn that voice off sooner or later. After certain events (which may take a few in-game days), the pace of the game improves. Skill checks become manageable, the plot gains substance, and the feeling of paranoia and danger stays until the end. The game excels when the spy tone is serious: Betrayal, unrewarding sacrifices, addictions and despair. But it is far from the emotion and intellectual depth that made Disco Elysium a once-in-a-lifetime-title.

Good 💚 -Immersive. Harsh moral choices, dangerous situations and dire consequences for your failures. -Improved skill tree and health system. Each substance helps one of the three health stats while lowering another. -Great secondary characters. HOLOCENE, Gonzalo Gonza, PSEUDOPOP... -The 'Conditioning' (Thought cabinet in DE) section features superb art. -Thrilling development of the story after the early game. Bad💔 -Slow, dull and difficult early game. Loredump. -The city is too difficult to navigate. -The protagonist feels flat/incongruent due to the dialogue choices offered. -Shallow thoughts about politics. Where Disco Elysium set the bar high, this is bar talk at best. -That narrator sounds like [strike]the heat death of the universe[/strike] a regrettable artistic choice.
