Abstract
Just a trash. Works only in full-screen mode more or less fine on Ubuntu 16.04 with Intel® HD Graphics 4400.
GNU/Linux
Intel® HD Graphics 4400.
Zack Y is a template flip from Anamik Majumdar, who keeps reskinning the same lame GameMaker Studio game template and re-releasing it on Steam with a few minor changes. The GameMaker Studio template he keeps re-releasing is just a basic retro pixel (couldn't he rip off a template with proper graphics??) 2D top down/platformer stealth/action game. Here's some other results of his copy+paste school of "game development":

Haunted Jail: Alcatas
Ghost in the Barn House
Gaze at Maze
Smash Halloween Pumpkins: The Challenge
The Chills
Gregor Hills Haunted Hospital
Jaxon The Thief
House Number 666
My Haunted Doll
Axizon Labs: Zombies
The Haunted Exmone Theatre
Rescue Rina
The Haunted Tunnel
Heltons Haunted Hotel
Gaze At Maze
Ghost In The Barn House
Zack Y
These are all basically the exact same GameMaker Studio game template with a different skin and a couple of things changed. No professional effort was made in terms of game development, using a game construction kit requires no game development talent, and unsurprisingly produces products that have little to no value as games, especially when compared to the work of professional developers who create genuine products for gamers. No matter how many times this guy copy+pastes the same game, it's not suddenly going to become anything but garbage. Rehashing the same game over and over again is just a cheap nasty cash grab. While Anamik Majumdar occasionally breaks Valve guidelines for partners and attacks reviewers, any legitimacy he may have is eracticated by the way he pumps these copy+paste asset flips out and bulk sells keys to crapware bundle merchants like DailyIndieGame. It's also important to note Anamik Majumdar has denied using GameMaker Studio to make his asset flips, despite every single one being made with GameMaker Studio. It's unclear why Anamik Majumdar is consistently dishonest about his asset flips. As usual, my recommendation is to never give money to asset flippers and construction kit copy+paste scammers, so don't reward this one.
Zack Y is a retro-styled side-scrolling action platformer that fully embraces the design philosophy of classic arcade shooters while building a fast-paced science-fiction adventure around alien warfare, futuristic military conflicts, and relentless combat. Developed and published by Anamik Majumdar, the game feels deeply rooted in the era when platform shooters focused almost entirely on reflexes, stage memorization, and nonstop gameplay momentum rather than cinematic storytelling or complex progression systems. From the moment the game begins, it becomes clear that Zack Y is designed as a tribute to older arcade experiences where difficulty, precision, and persistence formed the core of the challenge. While the game carries obvious limitations in polish and production value, it compensates through enthusiasm, nostalgic charm, and a clear understanding of what makes retro side-scrolling shooters enjoyable. The story follows Zack Y, an alien warrior forced into a brutal conflict against dangerous hostile forces threatening entire regions through advanced military technology and aggressive invasions. The world itself feels heavily inspired by classic science-fiction arcade games where futuristic cities, underground laboratories, military compounds, and enemy-controlled facilities serve as the backdrop for nonstop action. Zack’s mission involves infiltrating enemy territories, surviving deadly environments, and eliminating the hostile forces responsible for the growing destruction. The narrative structure is intentionally simple and straightforward, placing the focus almost entirely on gameplay progression rather than emotional storytelling. However, the science-fiction setting gives the game a strong identity, and the alien protagonist helps separate it from many generic military-themed indie platformers. The simplicity of the plot ultimately works in the game’s favor because it allows the pacing to remain fast and uninterrupted throughout the entire adventure. One of the game’s strongest qualities is its visual style. Zack Y fully commits to retro pixel-art presentation, creating environments that immediately capture the feeling of classic arcade side-scrollers from older gaming generations. Futuristic laboratories, industrial war zones, underground bunkers, mechanical fortresses, and alien landscapes appear throughout the campaign, each filled with traps, enemies, and environmental hazards that reinforce the game’s science-fiction atmosphere. Bright laser effects, exaggerated explosions, colorful enemy sprites, and flashing mechanical hazards all contribute to a lively arcade identity that feels authentic rather than artificially nostalgic. The graphics themselves are relatively simple compared to modern indie platformers, but the consistent art direction gives the game personality and makes the environments visually memorable despite their limited technical complexity. Gameplay revolves around traditional run-and-gun mechanics mixed with platforming challenges, environmental navigation, and survival-focused combat encounters. Players guide Zack Y through dangerous stages while fighting enemies, avoiding traps, collecting resources, and surviving increasingly difficult platforming sequences. The controls are straightforward and generally responsive enough to support the game’s fast-paced action design. Jumping, shooting, dodging, and navigating hazards all happen constantly, creating the kind of gameplay rhythm associated with older arcade titles where standing still for even a moment often meant failure. The game understands that momentum is essential for this style of action platformer, and it maintains that energy consistently across the entire campaign. Combat is intentionally simple but surprisingly satisfying because of the game’s pacing and enemy placement. Zack Y gains access to multiple attack types and weapons that help vary encounters throughout the adventure. Standard enemies can usually be eliminated quickly, but later stages introduce stronger opponents, projectile-heavy combat scenarios, and environmental hazards that require far greater precision and awareness. The gameplay constantly encourages aggressive movement and quick reactions because enemy attacks often arrive alongside moving traps and dangerous terrain. This combination creates chaotic sequences where players must carefully balance offense and survival, especially during later levels where the difficulty escalates dramatically. The level design demonstrates more creativity than might initially be expected from a smaller indie project. Each stage introduces different combinations of hazards, enemy formations, and environmental mechanics that help maintain gameplay variety throughout the campaign. Some levels focus heavily on direct combat against enemy soldiers and robotic defenses, while others emphasize difficult platforming sections filled with spikes, lasers, moving platforms, collapsing floors, and environmental traps. Exploration also plays a small but important role because hidden resources and collectibles reward players willing to carefully inspect each environment rather than simply rushing toward the exit. This combination of action and exploration helps prevent the gameplay from feeling completely repetitive despite its relatively straightforward structure. Enemy variety also contributes positively to the pacing. Basic enemies gradually give way to stronger alien creatures, aggressive mechanical units, automated defenses, and projectile-based attackers that force players to constantly adapt their movement patterns. Some enemies pressure the player aggressively at close range, while others attack from elevated positions or appear alongside environmental hazards to create especially dangerous situations. The boss encounters serve as major highlights because they create memorable spikes in difficulty that test the player’s understanding of movement, timing, and attack patterns. These battles may not be especially complex mechanically, but they successfully recreate the feeling of classic arcade boss fights where survival depended heavily on patience and memorization. The soundtrack complements the retro science-fiction atmosphere extremely well. Electronic music tracks, energetic combat themes, and fast-paced background melodies maintain momentum during platforming sections and enemy encounters. The audio design follows the exaggerated arcade philosophy present throughout the rest of the game, using loud explosions, laser effects, and impactful sound cues to enhance the intensity of combat. While the soundtrack is not especially advanced from a technical perspective, it fits the overall experience perfectly and reinforces the nostalgic identity the game is clearly aiming for. For players who enjoy retro-inspired platform shooters, science-fiction arcade games, and indie projects built around old-school gameplay philosophy, Zack Y offers an energetic and satisfying experience filled with dangerous environments, intense combat encounters, and nonstop action. Its rough movement, repetitive enemy behavior, and limited polish prevent it from reaching the highest level of indie platformers, but the passion and enthusiasm behind the project still make it memorable. It ultimately succeeds as a heartfelt tribute to classic arcade action games while adding enough science-fiction personality and challenging gameplay to stand apart from many other retro-inspired indie releases. Rating: 6/10
This main character has goofy Princess Leia ears and the game itself is kinda fun in a "so broken it's hilarious" kind of way. It's not repetitive and there are some cool sequences. The final boss fight where you fight a scorpion with a woman's head is entertaining.

nope
