Is not it better to…Let it go? * cue the Disney music*
Christmas is just around the corner and New Year is not that far away so we are all looking for something to support our festive mood. Sometimes even simple things like orange tangerines or the smell of pine trees are enough to make us happy. So, how about some romance with a Christmas Spirit? Sounds interesting? Your Little Story is a very short visual novel (its name gives you quite a hint about it) where you can choose your own Spirit right at the beginning of the game – just select one of the beautiful portraits. There is a cool looking guy with a resting b…ekm…serious facial expression and a cute blonde girl with sparkling hearts in her eyes. Literally. Will this story have a happy ending, though? Let us have a quick look!
Pros

Artwork is very beautiful. I can see that a lot of love was put into each CG and sprite, which, by the way, have various facial expressions. Backgrounds are quite simple, but very cozy. They work well with characters’ sprites and set each scene perfectly. UI is also nothing to write home about as it has just enough features for any decent visual novel, but it fits the overall design nicely. And it also goes well with the overall holiday theme;
Good music. There are not many tracks, but all of them were pleasant;
As I always say in my reviews, English is not my first language. Which means that my attitude towards translation can be a bit biased – after all, I might not know some specific things that any native speaker will notice right away. However, my general impression of the text is mostly positive. I did notice several small grammar and vocabulary mistakes (can you really ‘bow’ your head to your shoulder? Or call a girl ‘handsome’? I am positive that the answer is no), an extra word in one sentence, and there definitely could be more commas in some places, but overall, the story was quite easy to read and understand. The writing was smooth if a bit simplistic at times;
Main character changes gender depending on the Spirit you choose. If you decided to pursue romance with the male spirit, you will play as a girl called Alex; if your eyes cannot but look at the female one, then you will start as a boy called - surprise! – also Alex. I am not sure how people interested in same sex romance will react to this feature, but for me it was more on the pros side than neutral or cons as developers actually bothered to cater to more than one group of players and drew separate CGs for both routes. However, the story…well, read about it below to understand what I mean.

Neutral
The story. To begin with, it is rather plain but still lovely – if you are looking for something simple and short to spend an evening with before Christmas/New Year, then you will probably enjoy Your Little Story. It has the festive atmosphere, as well as some sweet parts about importance of loving yourself and leaving bad things behind. On the other hand, if you thought that there are two separate stories for each Spirit, then you are in for a major disappointment. The stories for both paths are ABSOLUTELY the same, word for word. Or the changes were too subtle for me to even notice.
Cons

This visual novel is extremely short – both routes and all achievements took me only 106 minutes! If stories were different for both spirits, then the playtime could reach at least 3-4 hours – but they are not, sadly;
Backlog was confusing at first. My initial impression was that it seemed to be extremely inconvenient. It always brings you to the very first sentence in the scene, not to the one you have just read. Scrolling through the text is very slow, but as I found out later, if you hold the slider, you can just move it fast enough and read the part you need. However, as soon as you stop holding it, the Backlog closes completely and you have start looking for the sentence you need again;
If you get to the Settings from the Main Menu, you will see ‘Back to Title’ option. If you click on it…nothing will happen as it turns out to be inactive. What is this sign for then if there is also a big blue arrow that does the trick perfectly? This mystery is easily explained as soon as you get into the game - you will see the same two options, but this time both of them work properly. The arrow will bring you from the Settings back to the game while Back to Title will, obviously, lead to the Main Menu. Now everything looks and acts logically. It is a very small design issue, but I still noticed it;
It is sad that you cannot take screenshots (as Steam overlay is not available) because the artwork is wonderful. I would love to add these CGs to my collection, but alas!

Would I recommend it?
This is tough question. This review has a positive mark, yet my overall impression is neutral. Your Little Story has both good and bad sides and all of them can become the reason to either love or hate it. What I can say for sure is that this game did not annoy me at all like some other titles did (yes, Happiness Drops, 7'scarlet and Kotodama, I am looking at you here!). I was a bit disappointed that routes were the same for both characters, but at least they were pleasant to read. To sum up, I cannot outright recommend Your Little Story but I also will not discourage you from playing it. After all, why not give it a try if you just want to feel a bit more Christmassy? Due to the poor English displayed on the store page for Your Little Story: Winter, my outlook for the game started from a handicapped position even before I had installed it. First impressions do count, and for me, nothing breaks story immersion more than failings in the text or language. So it was that I opened it up for the first time with some trepidation. How did it fare? Let's find out. At its core, this short story is about meeting someone at a special time of year and developing a bond that may go on to become a romantic attachment. You play the part of Alex, whose gender defaults to the opposite of whomever you select from the two routes available. The game starts with Alex decorating the Christmas tree, slipping on a box whilst doing so, and falling unconscious as a result. (S)he then awakes to find a very attractive stranger in the apartment looking down with concern. This stranger claims to be a spirit sent to help decorate and ensure that Alex does not wind up spending the advent of New Year alone. From this point the story then follows repair or replacement of the decorations broken in the fall by the unfamiliar pair, and any developing warmth between them; dependant upon player choices. Graphically, the game performs quite well. Backgrounds are clean and crisp. Without needing to be elaborately detailed, each room depicts its representation very nicely; and this quality is maintained with both of the potential love interests' sprites, which are expressive enough to be believable as characterisations of actual people. We do not get to see the protagonist, although with the auto-gender-change and ambiguous name, this is perhaps just as well, as it allows us to conjure an image of our own. There are a few choices to be made – I wasn't counting but it's around half dozen – which isn't bad for the size of the game, and they do make a marked difference either to how the tale progresses or how it ends; and also behave in a reasonably predictable fashion, so that you should be able to achievement hunt without aggravation if that is your desire. The good ending has a nice little twist in store, even if it is so obvious that you'll have figured it from the start. It still gave me a satisfied little smile nonetheless. Having said the above, however, the rest of the package falls down. I suspect that if you're playing the game in Russian, you are going to have a very nice little Christmas tale that will warm the cockles of your heart and leave you feeling good when you reach the best conclusion. Sadly, I cannot apply the same sentiment beyond this. Unlike the reviewers who published before me, I am English, and the translation failings frustrated me initially, before finally driving me up the wall altogether; completely spoiling any hope I had of enjoying the game and thoroughly justifying my pre-installation concerns. The writer has clearly used an excellent spellchecker, which is a positive. I spotted one typo only and no clear spelling errors; but the text – I would guess – has been literally translated word-for-word, and the result is clunky, awkward, and sometimes so long-winded that the meaning is lost altogether. Sadly the Steam screenshot F12 facility is not supported so I cannot post a graphic example, but here is a typical line which demonstrates the problem perfectly: ”The main worry is for it to not turn out to be a tie for an article in the criminal chronicle.” Umm.. what?! Honestly, sometimes I spent so long trying to unravel what on earth the writer was trying to say, that I forgot what the previous entry had been, and thus lost the thread of what was going on altogether. Here's another cracker. As anyone who has learned English knows, you should never use a double-negative. Well, the author/translator went one better with this: ”I'm not sure I didn't put it somewhere I won't be able to reach by myself.” Good luck interpreting that one. Even if you can get by the translation quality sufficiently to be able to enjoy the story regardless, then the UI pops up and provides its own annoyances. Initially, there is no BACK button. Surely this really is an essential in a visual novel? It is so easy to accidentally miss one text entry with an inadvertent button tap, the player should always be able to back-step. The game does provide a history log, so you can catch up on anything you missed or need to re-read to make sense of, but it falls into the trap of starting with the oldest entry rather than the last one. You can mouse-wheel scroll down to find the text you want, but doing so is painfully slow. Alternatively, just press and hold the mouse button, and drag the slider.. but don't release the button until you have finished reading, else the log will disappear, and you'll have to go through the procedure over again. An infuriating design decision. Visual presentation really is lovely throughout, quite clearly the game's main selling point; but even that has created its own avoidable issues. The text box is a delightful wintry snowflake scene upon a light grey background; with the text a particularly attractive font of black lettering with white outline. I'm sure you can already see the problem: if the text is just one line long, it's not too bad; but when there are several lines, the text begins to merge with the background and it becomes a bit of a challenge to read (made worse of course when the sentence phrasing is so confused). If you're 17 years old with perfect vision, it probably isn't going to bother you. For everybody else, it's going to be less than ideal. Overall, the pleasure gained from the simple story is only a fraction of the irritation endured in a number of places during the battle to get to the end of the game. For this, my verdict has to be a clear thumbs down, though I would emphasise that this assessment is based solely on the English version of the game. If you can read Russian, you'd be well advised to read reviews written in the language and make your decision based more around those.
while I will play (and in most cases, enjoy) just about any otome game that i can get my hands on (that looks like it took longer than a lazy afternoon to make) sadly...this game falls a little short. my first play-through (guy) got me a bad end, so i checked the guide to see if it would be of help. I found one, and followed it. ..another bad end (despite it saying these choices would lead me to the good end) if you have an average to quick reading speed the game will last for about 20-30 minutes without skipping. i spent almost 2 hours making several different choices, all of which lead me to different bad endings. for the life of me, i cannot find the good ending. also, the girl has the exact same story, WORD. FOR. WORD.
